A novel prenylated flavanoid, isonymphaeol-D (1), together with two known compounds, isonymphaeol-B (2) and nymphaeol-B (3), were isolated from Egyptian propolis. The structures of the isolated compounds were determined by various spectroscopic methods. 1 exhibited antibacterial activity against Gram-positive (Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative strains (Serratia sp., Pseudomonos sp., Escherichia coli).

Objective To assess the possible effects of peritonitis on peritoneal and systemic acid-base status. Design pH, pCO2, lactate, and total leukocyte and differential count were simultaneously determined in the overnight dwell peritoneal dialysis effluent (PDE) and arterial blood in noninfected patients (controls) and on days 1, 3, and 5 from the onset of peritonitis. Setting University multidisciplinary dialysis program. Patients Prospective analysis of 63 peritonitis episodes occurring in 30 adult CAPD patients in a single center. Results In controls, mean (±SD) acid-base parameters were pH 7.41 ±0.05, pCO2 43.5±2.6 mm Hg, lactate 2.5±1.5 mmol/L in the PDE, and pH 7.43±0.04, PaCO2 36.8±3.8 mm Hg, lactate 1.4±0.7 mmol/L in the blood. In sterile (n=6), gram-positive (n=34), and Staphylococcus aureus (n=9) peritonitis PDE pH's on day 1 were, respectively, 7. 29±0.07, 7. 32±0.07, and 7.30±0.08 (p<0.05 vs control). In gram -negative peritonitis (n=14) PDE pH was 7.21 ±0.08 (p<0.05 vs all other groups). A two-to-threefold increase in PDE lactate was observed in all peritonitis groups, but a rise in pCO2 was only seen in gram -negative peritonitis. Acid-base profile of PDE had returned to control values by day 3 in sterile, gram -positive and Staphylococcus aureus peritonitis and by day 5 in gramnegative peritonitis. Despite a slight increase in plasma lactate on the first day of peritonitis, arterial blood pH was not affected by peritonitis. Conclusion PDE pH is decreased in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) peritonitis, even in the absence of bacterial growth. In gram-negative peritonitis, PDE acidosis is more pronounced and prolonged, and pCO2 is markedly increased. Arterial blood pH is not affected by peritonitis.

The antibacterial activity of functionalized zeolite NaY (CBV100) with different concentrations of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) (0.01, 0.05, 0.20 and 0.40 M) was studied against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 (Gram positive) and Escherichia coli ATCC 11229 (Gram negative) through disc diffusion technique (DDT). The characterization of functionalized zeolite NaY with fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated the attachment of APTES on zeolite NaY. Through DDT, the inhibition zone of functionalized zeolite NaY increased proportionally to the amount of the amine-functional group attached onto zeolite NaY. Functionalized zeolite NaY showed higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive compared to Gram-negative bacteria. It can be concluded from this study that amine-functionalized zeolite NaY shows evidence of antibacterial activities.

SummaryEffects of the addition of a proteinase (Neutrase 1–5S) and a peptidase (aminopeptidase DP-102) as agents for accelerating the ripening of Cheddar cheese on the survival of some non-starter bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coliand aSalmonellasp.) were studied throughout a 4-month ripening period. The enzymes were found to have no significant effect on the survival of the Gram-positive bacteria but some significant effects were observed, at some stages of the ripening period, with the Gram-negative bacteria in that lower levels were recovered from cheeses treated with the enzyme system.

Paper with antimicrobial properties was developed through in situ growth of ZnO nanorods. The targeted application for this type of paper is in health centers as wallpaper, writing paper, facemasks, tissue paper, etc. The paper was tested on three model microbes, Gram-positive bacteriaStaphylococcus aureus,Gram-negative bacteriaEscherichia coliand common airborne fungusAspergillus niger. No viable bacterial colonies or fungal spores could be detected in the areas surrounding test samples of the antimicrobial paper. Gram-negative bacteriaEscherichia coliwere found to be inhibited in an area that is 239% and 163% the area of the paper sample under different room lighting conditions, i.e., halogen and fluorescent lamp illumination, respectively. For Gram-positive bacteriaStaphylococcus aureusthe zones of inhibition surrounding the paper samples are 102% and 70%, and forAspergillus niger, 224% and 183% of the sample area, under similar lighting conditions.

Researchers are continuing to discover all the properties of propolis due to its complex composition and associated broad spectrum of activities. This review aims to characterize the latest scientific reports in the field of antibacterial activity of this substance. The results of studies on the influence of propolis on more than 600 bacterial strains were analyzed. The greater activity of propolis against Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative was confirmed. Moreover, the antimicrobial activity of propolis from different regions of the world was compared. As a result, high activity of propolis from the Middle East was found in relation to both, Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) strains. Simultaneously, the lowest activity was demonstrated for propolis samples from Germany, Ireland and Korea.
