Objective The aim of the study is to investigate factors affecting total sleep time (TST) during infant polysomnography (PSG) and assess if <4 hours of TST is sufficient for accurate interpretation. Study Design Overall, 242 PSGs performed in 194 infants <6 months of chronological age between March 2013 and December 2015 were reviewed to identify factors that affect TST, including age of infant, location and timing of study, presence of medical complexity, and presence of nasal tubes. A continuum of apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) in relation to TST was reviewed. Data were examined in infants who had TST <4 hours and low AHI. Results Greater TST (p < 0.001) was noted among infants during nocturnal PSGs, at older chronological and post-menstrual ages, and without medical complexity. The presence of nasogastric/impedance probes reduced TST (p = 0.002). Elevated AHIs were identified even in PSGs with TST <4 hours. Short TST may have affected interpretation and delayed initial management in one infant without any inadvertent complications. Conclusion Clinical factors such as PMA and medical complexity, and potentially modifiable factors such as time of day and location of study appeared to affect TST during infant PSGs. TST < 4 hours can be sufficient to identify high AHI allowing physician interpretation. Key Points

Pollinator visitation to, and the reproductive success of, Sonneratia caseolaris (Sonneratiaceae) and Aegiceras corniculatum (Myrsinaceae) was investigated in a mangrove forest in India. S. caseolaris was shown to be primarily outcrossed and A. corniculatum was shown to be a selfing species. The flowers of both plant species attracted several diurnal and nocturnal visitors. Earlier reports had indicated that S. caseolaris flowered for one night and was exclusively night-pollinated. But flowers of this species were found to be in bloom both at night and during the day, and diurnal visitors to the flowers were more diverse and frequent than nocturnal ones. This was related to the higher volume and energy value of nectar in the morning. The effects of time of day and temperature on visitation rates were quantified. The importance of visitors to plant reproductive success was investigated via controlled visitor-exclusion experiments. Pollinators were expected to be more important for the outcrossing species than for the selfing species, and this was confirmed by the results of the exclusion experiments. In S. caseolaris reproductive success was determined both by pollinator availability and the intensity of flower and fruit predation, while in A. corniculatum it is likely to be resource limited.

SUMMARYInfection with Schistosoma haematobium was studied in a rural community of approximately 500 persons in eastern Zimbabwe. The overall prevalence of infection, as determined by urine egg counts, was 40·1%, and of heavy infections (≥ 50 eggs/10 ml urine) was 11·0%. The prevalence of both heavy and all infections was highest in the 8 to 10-year-old age class. During 1987–88 data were obtained from 102 individuals on intensity of reinfection 14 weeks after treatment with praziquantel, the efficacy of treatment having been determined after 4 weeks. The water contact made by these individuals during 2-week periods immediately following treatment was recorded. The relative abundance of patent infected intermediate host snails, Bulinus globosus, was also monitored. An index of exposure was developed which weighted each water contact by its duration, the type of activity, the time of day, and the abundance of infected snails at the site used. The relationships between rates of reinfection, rates of exposure, and age were examined. Although only 13 individuals showed positive rates of reinfection, there were statistically significant and independent effects of both exposure and age on reinfection rate. Quantitative estimates of reinfection rates suggested that individuals aged 12 years or less acquired substantially more infection (measured as egg output) than individuals more than 12 years old.

Mysis relicta was fed Epischura nevadensis late instars or Diaptomus tyrrelli males in a series of feeding experiments. Mysis clearance rates were not affected by the time of day mysids were collected, the time of day experiments were conducted, or conditioning of experimental water by predators and prey. Mysis fed as efficiently in the dark as in bright light, and exhibited increasing clearance rates with increasing container size. When Diaptomus males were used as prey Mysis clearance rates were significantly higher at 5 °C than 10 and 15 °C; temperature did not affect clearance rates with Epischura as prey. Mean clearance rates tended to decline with increasing prey density, but the only significant differences were recorded when Epischura was used as prey. Prior acclimation to experimental light and temperature conditions had no effect on the results. When presented with an abundant food supply, freshly collected Mysis fed at initially low rates. Subsequent feeding rate peaks were followed by feeding rate declines to low levels over a 24-h period. Individual Mysis consumption rates remained relatively constant from day to day.Key words: Mysis relicta, predation, copepods, clearance rates, opossum shrimp

— Sleep-wake cycle is the most evident 24 hour rhythms observed in humans. This circadian variation is a normal biological clock. The physiological phenomenon, however has been able to explain the onset of cardiac events that also tend to occur during certain time of day. It has been known that there is a tendency for major cardiovascular episodes to occur during the mid-morning hours. With the advent of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, the fluctuations of blood pressure throughout the day are able to be captured. This is called blood pressure variability (BPV). The factors affecting BPV include age, sex, physical activity, mental activity, behavioural and environmental. Recent studies have shown that high BPV is associated with target organ damage, in particular cardiovascular and coronary artery diseases. In the effort to explain the mechanisms related to these complications out of excessive BPV, several studies explored the role of history of family with hypertension, hyperglycaemia and hyperlipidemia towards developing pre-existing condition that lead to high BPV.

AbstractBackground and ObjectivesThere is increasing evidence that frequent blood donation depletes the iron stores of some blood donors. The FinDonor 10 000 study was set up to study iron status and factors affecting iron stores in Finnish blood donors. In Finland, iron supplementation for at-risk groups has been in place since the 1980’s.Material and Methods2584 blood donors (N= 8003 samples) were recruited into the study alongside the standard donation at three donation sites in the capital region of Finland between 5/2015 and 12/2017. All participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire about their health and lifestyle. Blood samples were collected from the sample pouch of whole blood collection set, kept in cool temperature and processed centrally. Whole blood count, CRP, ferritin and sTFR were measured from the samples and DNA was isolated for GWAS studies.ResultsParticipant demographics, albeit in general similar to the general blood donor population in Finland, indicated some bias toward older and more frequent donors. Participation in the study increased median donation frequency of the donors. Analysis of the effect of time lag from the sampling to the analysis and the time of day when sample was drawn revealed small but significant time-dependent changes.ConclusionThe FinDonor cohort now provides us with tools to identify potential donor groups at increased risk of iron deficiency as factors explaining this risk. The increase in donation frequency during the study suggests that scientific projects can be used to increase the commitment of blood donors.

Objective: Assessment and identification of some factors affecting the outcome of treatment of children withPectus carinatum by orthotic bracing (Non - Invasive Intervention).Subjectives: 86 children with Pectus carinatum end of treatment and re-examination at the RehabilitationDepartment of Viet Nam National Children’s Hospital from January 2015 to January 2017.Methods: The intervention study no control group.Result: 100% of children improved on deformity. The Haller Index increased from 1.81 before interventionto 2.23 after 36 months of intervention (p <0.001). Some factors related to progression: The Haller Index beforetreatment (B = 0.383, p <0.001). Time of day Wearing the brace (B = 0.017; p <0.001).

Abstract Background: Secretion of nectar is highly influenced by many factors and the objective of the study was also to evaluate factors affecting concentrations of nectar of Croton macrostachyus Hochst.ex Delile. Age of plants highly affect nectar concentration and volume. Honey quality and its medicinal values depends on plants species variety and their sucrose concentration quality and quantity which is governed by many biotic and abiotic factors as well micro climate of the area. Wholesale of nectar and concentration of tend to show more differences in time of day for species study undertaken.Results: As results publicized that nectar concentration and volume of youngest age was not more affected by temperature and relative humidity like that of medium and oldest ages. Temperature and age have significant effect on volume (p = 0.0001) and their interactions is also significant (p = 0.01145). Temperature has significant effects on nectar concentration (p = 0.000). Interaction of relative humidity, time, and layers has significant effects on nectar concentration (p = 0.0024012). The oldest plants had the highest concentration of 10.1 w/w mornings and afternoon 36.5 w/w at 4:00 PM for whereas medium plants had nectar concentration of 5.7 w/w morning and afternoon 16.7 w/w and the smaller or younger plants had nectar concentration of 2.7 w/w mornings and afternoon 9.1 w/w and this shows age significantly affect nectar concentration and volume.Conclusions:Concentration and volume were affected by many biotic and abiotic factors. I conclude imminent fever intensification could harm nectar production since for croton also no nectar could be collected at 30 C⁰ and no nectar recreation was observed after this peak temperature this indicates environmental change can increase the temperature which will have negative influences on honey production in the future unless we combat against climate change which will affect honey production and productivity for the country and we will lose honey and its medicinal values also.

Bryant (1993) collected extensive data on the habitat preferences of the platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) measured in 36 pools in the upper Macquarie River system. Platypus presence or absence in these pools was measured on three occasions. Detailed modelling of the factors affecting pool preference was complicated by the scale of response being ordinal due to the inability of the observer to distinguish between repeated sightings of the same animal and several different animals. Initial modelling using logistic regression on a presence/absence index, collapsed from the ordinal response, discounted time of day and seasonal effects. These temporal simplifications allowed a binomial analysis of success rate based on the three visits, which identified an additional habitat factor not identified in the original analysis. Finally, a full ordinal regression of the proportions falling into each ordered category is presented as the ultimate modelling of platypus pooI preferences. The analysis indicated that length and depth of pools and the presence of overhanging vegetation were positively related to the observed presence of platypuses.
