Abstract Many semiconductor products are manufactured with mature technologies involving the uses of aluminum (Al) lines and tungsten (W) vias. High resistances of the vias were sometimes observed only after electrical or thermal stress. A layer of Ti oxide was found on such a via. In the wafer processing, the post W chemical mechanical planarization (WCMP) cleaning left residual W oxide on the W plugs. Ti from the overlaying metal line spontaneously reduced the W oxide, through which Ti oxide formed. Compared with W oxide, the Ti oxide has a larger formation enthalpy, and the valence electrons of Ti are more tightly bound to the O ion cores. As a result, the Ti oxide is more resistive than the W oxide. Consequently, the die functioned well in the first test in the fab, but the via resistance increased significantly after a thermal stress, which led to device failure in the second test. The NH4OH concentration was therefore increased to more effectively remove residual W oxide, which solved the problem. The thermal stress had prevented the latent issue from becoming a more costly field failure.

Abstract Owing to the advancing progress of electrical measurements using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) or AFM (Atomic Force Microscope) based nanoprober systems on nanoscale devices in the modern semiconductor laboratory, we already have the capability to apply DC sweep for quasi-static I-V (Current-Voltage), high speed pulsing waveform for the dynamic I-V, and AC imposed for C-V (Capacitance-Voltage) analysis to the MOS devices. The available frequency is up to 100MHz at the current techniques. The specification of pulsed falling/rising time is around 10-1ns and the measurable capacitance can be available down to 50aF, for the nano-dimension down to 14nm. The mechanisms of dynamic applications are somewhat deeper than quasi-static current-voltage analysis. Regarding the operation, it is complicated for pulsing function but much easy for C-V. The effective FA (Failure Analysis) applications include the detection of resistive gate and analysis for abnormal channel doping issue.

Background In a reverse total shoulder arthroplasty, the altered glenohumeral joint center of rotation subjects the glenoid baseplate to increased shear forces and potential loosening. Methods This study examined glenoid baseplate micromotion and initial fixation strength with the application of direct shear force in a Sawbone model. The reverse total shoulder arthroplasty systems examined were the DJO Reverse® Shoulder Prosthesis, the Exactech Equinoxe® Reverse System, and the Tornier AequalisTM Reverse Shoulder Prosthesis. Specimens were cyclically tested with increasing shear loads until 150 µm of displacement between the implant and glenoid was achieved, and subsequently until failure, classified as either 1 cm of implant/glenoid displacement or fracture. Results The average load withstood for the 150 µm threshold for DJO, Tornier, and Exactech was 460 ± 88 N, 525 ± 100 N, and 585 ± 160 N, respectively. The average total load at device failure for DJO, Tornier, and Exactech was 980 ± 260 N, 1260 ± 120 N, and 1350 ± 230 N, respectively. Discussion The Exactech implant design trended toward requiring more load to induce micromotion at each threshold and to induce device failure, most commonly seen as inferior screw pull out. This study proposes design features that may enhance fixation and suggests little risk of initial micromotion or failure during initial post-operative recovery.

Abstract Background Subjects with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) have been excluded from transcatheter aortic valve re- placement (TAVR) randomized trials. Methods With this meta-analysis of observational studies we first compared TAVR outcomes of BAV vs. tricuspid aortic valve (TAV) patients, stratifying the results by device generation. Then, we looked for differences between balloon-expandable (BE) and self-expandable (SE) bioprostheses in BAV patients. Primary outcome was 30-day mortality. Secondary outcomes were 30-day stroke, moderate-severe paravalvular leakage, new pacemaker im- plantation, vascular complications and 1-year mortality. Results Thirteen studies (11,032 patients, 7291 TAV and 3741 BAV) and seven studies (706 patients, 367 treated with BE, 339 with SE valve) met inclusion criteria. Thirty-day (OR=1.13; 95% CI: 0.88–1.46, p=0.33) and 1-year mortality (OR=1.02; 95% CI: 0.77–1.37, p=0.87) were similar between patients receiving TAVR for BAV or TAV. Subjects treated for BAV were at higher risk of conversion to conventional surgery (OR=2.35; 95% CI: 1.30–4.23, p=0.005), implantation of a second valve (OR=2.06; 95% CI: 1.31–3.25; p=0.002), moderate/severe paravalvular leakage (PVL) (OR=1.67; 95% CI: 1.29–2.17; p=0.0001) and device failure (OR=1.26; 95% CI: 1.02–1.56; p=0.04). Rates of adverse events decreased significantly with the use of new-generation devices, but outcome differences remained consistent. BAV patients treated with BE vs. SE valves had similar 30-day and 1-year mortality, stroke and moderate-severe PVL. Balloon-expandable valves were associated with lower rates of a second valve and new pacemaker implantation but carried higher risk of annular rupture. Conclusions BAV patients treated with TAVR had similar 30-day and 1-year mortality as well as stroke and new pacemaker implantation rates compared to TAV subjects, but carried higher risk of moderate/severe PVL, conver- sion to surgery and device failure. Event rates significantly decreased with the use of new-generation devices, but TAVR still showed better procedural results in TAV compared to BAV. The Bonebridge and Vibrant Soundbridge systems are semi-implanted hearing devices, which have been widely applied in patients with congenital conductive hearing loss. However, comparison between these two hearing devices is rare, especially in the same patient. We report a 23-year-old man who underwent successive implantation of Vibrant Soundbridge and Bonebridge devices in the same ear because of dysfunction of the Vibrant Soundbridge. We provide insight on the patient’s experience and compare the audiological and subjective outcomes of satisfaction.
