Pb isotopic ratios in airborne PM10 of an iron/metal industrial complex area and nearby residential areas: Implications for ambient sources of Pb pollution

Green buffer (GB) zones are designed to prevent the spread of air pollutants and odors from industrial complexes (ICs) to residential areas (RAs). We analyzed changes in the concentration of particulate matter (PM) and the number of high PM pollution days for 10 years after the GB was implemented, using the National Atmospheric Environmental Research Stations 2001–2018 dataset. We also performed field measurements of PM10 and PM2.5 from February 2018 to January 2019 to analyze the PM concentrations at human breathing height throughout the GB. Before GB implementation (2001–2006), PM10 in the RA was 9% higher than that in the IC. After GB zone implementation (2013–2018), PM10 in the RA was 11% lower than that of the IC. Furthermore, the PM concentration in the RA (slope = ∆Concentration/∆Time, −2.09) rapidly decreased compared to that in the IC (slope = −1.02) and the western coastal area (WCA) (slope = −1.55) over the 10-year period. At PM concentrations at human breathing height, PM10 and PM2.5 in the RA were lower than those in the IC by 27% and 26%, respectively. After GB implementation, the wind speed was positively correlated but SOx was negatively correlated with the PM reduction rate at a local scale. These results show that there was a reduction of PM during and after GB implementation, implying the need for proper management of GBs and continuous measure of pollutant sources at the green buffers of industrial complexes.

The article reveals the main features of the development of the urban environment. The structure of the urban economy, the environmental aspects of the development of modern cities are considered. The economic progress of any city is closely related to the territory in which it is located. Prioritization of use by individual territories depends on changes in the socio-economic sphere. The main factors of transformational changes in the urban economy are highlighted, among them – the development of human society, which stimulates the emergence of new industries and technologies, the gradual loss of the cities industrial function due to the increasing influence of the services sector, concentration in the cities large numbers of the population, which causes the renovation of the infrastructure, development of service, cultural and entertainment facilities, the environmental degradation, which encourages cities to refuse dirty production and road transport. The ecological state of Chernihiv and the dynamics of its changes are characterized. Chernihiv belongs to the type of cities with relatively high level of industrial development. Industrial complex of the city, having significant share in the real sector of economy of the city, considerably influences the level and quality of life of city inhabitants. Industrial enterprises of the city went through a deep economic crisis, and beginning since 2002, stood on the way of post-crisis development, that means stabilization and rebirth of production. One of the peculiarities of industrial infrastructure of the city is that most of industrial facilities are located outside residential areas of the city. Analyzed the results of a survey among residents of the city on the idea of sustainable (balanced) development. According to the data, the population is characterized by insufficient information about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The results of a sociological study record the trend of the gradual spread of eco-regulatory practices among the population. First of all, it concerns energy conservation, cycling and rational use of natural resources.

Abstract The study is aimed to apply the Pb isotope fingerprinting technique for tracing pollution of urban surface deposited sediment (USDS). USDS reflect changes in the geochemical conditions occurring in the environment. USDS samples were collected in residential areas with multistory buildings in Russian cities: Magnitogorsk, Nizhny Tagil, Tyumen, Ufa, and Chelyabinsk. Elements concentrations and stable Pb isotopic ratios were measured in the samples. The reconstruction of the initial geochemical baseline (IGB) relationship between potentially harmful element (PHE) Pb and conservative lithogenic element (CE) Fe was carried out for USDS sample populations in the cities. The IGB reconstruction divided USDS sample populations into the groups of ‘polluted’ and ‘unpolluted’ with Pb samples. Analysis of elements concentrations and Pb isotope ratios in the groups of USDS samples showed different trends in altering geochemical conditions for metals in the surveyed cities. The USDS is characterized by a decrease in the isotope ratios of 206Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb as a result of soil pollution by vehicles during the period of using leaded gasoline.

Concentrations and enrichment of heavy metals were determined in sediments collected from Beijiang River, South China. The Pb isotopic compositions in these sediment samples were also employed to effectively identify metal pollution sources. According to the measured Pb concentrations, the total Pb concentrations in sediments varied from 62.1 to 1,152.5 μg/g, with an average concentration of 249.6 μg/g. The assessment by Geoaccumulation Index indicates that Pb is at the ‘strongly contaminated’ level, indicating that the Pb pollution was mainly due to anthropogenic inputs. The observed isotopic ratios varied from 1.174 to 1.204 for 206Pb/207Pb, 2.452 to 2.478 for 208Pb/207Pb, 18.404 to 18.937 for 206Pb/204Pb, 15.631 to 15.790 for 207Pb/204Pb, 38.455 to 39.121 for 208Pb/204Pb. The majority of these ratios are lower than those reported for natural geological sources, especially for sediments collected from a smelter. Significant correlation between Pb concentration and isotopic ratios suggested possible binary mixing of Pb. Combined with Pb concentration and enrichment levels, our results show that Pb pollution in the sediments of Beijiang River was mainly derived from anthropogenic sources. The mining activities and metal smelting processing was the main source of Pb pollution in this region.

Introduction. This paper studied the impact of atmospheric air pollution by odourous emissions of enterprises on the health, quality of life, and various somatic and emotional disorders in the population of the neighbouring residential areas. Material and methods. According to official medical statistics, the analysis of the incidence rate of residents of a municipality with a population of about 50 thousand people, where there are objects of the agro-industrial complex and food industry that are sources of pronounced odours data. The study of the influence of air pollution with odourous substances on health, emotional state and quality of life was conducted by a questionnaire survey of residents living at various distances from enterprises that are sources of odours. Results. The incidence rate of digestive system diseases in the studied municipality is 1.6 and 1.9 times higher than in Russia. The incidence rate of endocrine system diseases and metabolic disorders is 2.2 and 2.4 times higher, respectively. The survey results showed the presence of several sources of “offensive” odours in the municipality, primarily the enterprises for the production of bone meal and instant coffee. The survey enabled to identify the priority pathologies in residents of the nearest territories: diseases of the endocrine system, digestive organs, and circulatory system, the frequency of which decreases with distance from enterprises, which is consistent with the results of the study on the incidence rate in the present territory. This may be because odours present in the atmospheric air contribute to the state of maladaptive stress, the main targets of which are the digestive organs and the endocrine system. Conclusion. Atmospheric air pollution with odourous substances is one of the indicators affecting the health of the population and making a significant contribution to the formation of the incidence structure of residential areas located near the sources of odours.
