The specific capsular polysaccharide of Streptococcus pneumoniae type 9N (American type 9) contains D-glucose, D-glucuronic acid, 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucose, and 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-mannose in the molar ratio of 2:1:1:1. Accumulated data from spectroscopic (13C and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance) and methylation analyses of the native and specifically degraded polysaccharide indicated that it was linear and composed of the following pentasaccharide repeating unit; —4)-α-D-GlcpA-(1 → 3)-α-D-Glcp-(1 → 3)-β-D-ManpNAc-(1 → 4)-α-D-Glcp-(1 → 4)-β-D-GlcpNAc(1 →. Structural regions in the type 9N polysaccharide common to those of types 9A, 9L, and 9V have been identified which account for the cross-reactivity of this groups of polysaccharides.

SummaryFresh aortic rings incubated in serum produce more 6-oxo-PGF1α, the stable hydrolysis product of prostacyclin, than in plasma or buffer. A method is described of recovering this stimulatory activity from a dialysate of serum, showing that the activity is due to a prostacyclin stimulating factor. This factor is formed during coagulation initiated by the intrinsic pathway but not by the extrinsic pathway or by thrombin. By contrast with a previously described plasma factor, the activity of the prostacy-clinstimulating factor in serum is not greater in serum from patients with renal failure than from healthy controls. The stimulating factor is antagonised by heparin, but differs in other ways from previously described platelet derived stimulating factor(s).

ABSTRACT The occurrence of 131I-compounds in human faeces was studied after intravenous administration of 131I-thyroxine. The excretion of the radioactivity during 12 days ranged from 7.8 to 32.1 per cent of the dose administered with a mean of 16.0 (± 1.76). The radioactivity in the faeces was derived from free 131I-thyroxine. The total amount of faeces did not seem to influence the total excretion of the dose administered. After administration of 131I-triiodothyronine to rats and humans, triiodothyronine occurred in the bile mainly conjugated with glucuronic acid, but a considerable part of the radioactivity was found in diiodotyrosine. The radioacivity of human faeces after the administration of 131I-triiodothyronine was derived from free triiodothyronine. After injection of 131I-diiodotyrosine only labelled iodide was detected in the bile of rats. In the bile of humans most of the radioactivity was derived from iodide, and a small part of it was found in diiodotyrosine.

Flavonoids are one of the most common secondary metabolites occurring in plants. Their activity in the Central Nervous System (CNS) including sedative, anxiolytic, anti-convulsive, anti-depressant and neuro-protective actions is well known and documented. The most popular methods for detection, identification and structural elucidation of flavonoids are these based on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS). NMR allows rapid, high throughput analysis of crude extracts and also gives stereochemical details about identified substances. However, these methods are expensive and less sensitive than MS-based techniques. Combining High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with MS detection gives the most powerful tool for analysis of flavonoids occurring in plants. There is a lot of different approaches to use LC/MS based techniques for identification of flavonoids and this short review shows the most important.
