Vertebroplasty is a cost-effective procedure for the relief of pain in appropriately selected patients when performed by a skilled practitioner. The currently accepted indications and contraindications for vertebroplasty are reviewed. The techniques routinely used by the authors are presented, including a discussion of recognized complications. Recent controversy has highlighted weaknesses in the practice of technology evaluation, and more robust studies will be required to address these issues across the board in the future more scientifically than has been done in the past.

Abstract The use of surface electromyography (SEMG) has increased exponentially in the past four decades. SEMG is one of the most widespread measures employed today in psychophysiological assessment and one of three primary biofeedback modalities. This article briefly outlines three areas that the author believes are important for SEMG to address if it is to continue to flourish in the future: applications in telehealth, the use of telemetry and ambulatory monitoring, and studies on the stability or reliability of surface electromyography.

The thermal gasification has been used for nearly 200 years. At the beginning coal or peat were used as a feedstock to produce gas for cooking and lighting. Nowadays, the coal gasification is still actual, anyway, in times without fossils the biomass and waste gasification becomes more important. In this paper, the past, present and future of the biomass and waste gasification (BWG) is discussed. The current status of BWG in Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and USA is detailed described and the future potential of the technology is outlined.

In keeping with the theme of this year’s e-Science All Hands Meeting—past, present and future—we consider the motivation for, the current status of, and the future directions for, the technologies developed within the GIMI (Generic Infrastructure for Medical Informatics) project. This analysis provides insights into how some key problems in data federation may be addressed. GIMI was funded by the UK’s Technology Strategy Board with the intention of developing a service-oriented framework to facilitate the secure sharing and aggregation of heterogeneous data from disparate sources to support a range of healthcare applications. The project, which was led by the University of Oxford, involved collaboration from the National Cancer Research Institute Informatics Initiative, Loughborough University, University College London, t+ Medical, Siemens Molecular Imaging and IBM UK.

AbstractWe review here the current status and the latest results of the modelling of quiescent prominence fine structures. We begin with the simulations of the prominence magnetic field configurations, through an overview of the modelling of the fine structure formation and dynamics, and with the emphasis on the radiative transfer modelling of the realistic prominence fine structures. We also illuminate the future directions of the field that lie in the combining of the existing approaches into more complex multi-disciplinary models.

Heavy metal pollution of aquatic media has grown significantly over the past few decades. Therefore, a number of physical, chemical, biological, and electrochemical technologies are being employed to tackle this problem. However, they possess various inescapable shortcomings curbing their utilization at a commercial scale. In this regard, nanotechnology has provided efficient and cost-effective solutions for the extraction of heavy metals from water. This review will provide a detailed overview on the efficiency and applicability of various adsorbents, i.e., carbon nanotubes, graphene, silica, zero-valent iron, and magnetic nanoparticles for scavenging metallic ions. These nanoparticles exhibit potential to be used in extracting a variety of toxic metals. Recently, nanomaterial-assisted bioelectrochemical removal of heavy metals has also emerged. To that end, various nanoparticle-based electrodes are being developed, offering more efficient, cost-effective, ecofriendly, and sustainable options. In addition, the promising perspectives of nanomaterials in environmental applications are also discussed in this paper and potential directions for future works are suggested.

Purpose – The aim of this paper is to discuss the challenges that the current economic crisis has posed for Greek public and municipal libraries. Design/methodology/approach – This is a viewpoint paper discussing the past, present and future directions that Greek public and municipal libraries have adopted or should adopt in the context of the present economic crisis. Findings – Greek public and municipal libraries ought to see the economic crisis as a challenge for development, improvement and the promotion of their presence and role in the community which they serve. Originality/value – The paper discusses the factors affecting the past and present situation relating to public and municipal libraries in Greece and addresses the future challenges for promoting development and innovation.

This research commentary introduces historical consciousness to studying organizational change. Most theories of organizational change contain within them implicit assumptions about history. Made explicit, these assumptions tend to cluster into different models of change that vary by the assumed objectivity of the past and the associated malleability of the future. We explore and elaborate the implicit assumptions of history. We identify four implicit models of history in the change literature: History-as-Fact, History-as-Power, History-as-Sensemaking, and History-as-Rhetoric. We discuss the implications of theorizing organizational change from each of these views of history and outline future directions for studying change with a heightened understanding of history.

Neutrino physics is an experimentally driven field. So, we investigate the different detection techniques available in the literature and study the various neutrino oscillation experiments in a chronological manner. Our primary focus is on the construction and detection mechanisms of each experiment. Today, we know a lot about this mysterious ghostly particle by performing different experiments at different times with different neutrino sources, viz. solar, atmospheric, reactor, accelerators and high-energy astrophysical; and they have contributed in the determination of neutrino parameters. Yet the problems are far from over. We need to determine more precise values of the already known parameters and unravel the completely unknown parameters. Some of the unknowns are absolute masses of neutrino, types of neutrino, mass hierarchy, octant degeneracy and existence of leptonic CP phase(s). We analyze the neutrino experiments into the past, present and the future (or proposed). We include SNO, Kamiokande, K2K, MINOS, MINOS+, Chooz, NEMO and ICARUS in the past; while Borexino, Double Chooz, Super-K, T2K, IceCube, KamLAND, NO[Formula: see text]A, RENO and Daya Bay in the present; and SNO+, Hyper-K, T2HK, JUNO, RENO-50, INO, DUNE, SuperNEMO, KM3NeT, P2O, LBNO and PINGU in the proposed experiments. We also discuss the necessities of upgrading the present ones to those of the proposed ones thereby summarizing the potentials of the future experiments. We conclude this paper with the current status of the neutrinos.

The present chapter deals with the introduction and implementation of rapid prototyping technologies in medical and dental field. Its purpose is to overview the advantages and limitations derived, to discuss the current status and to present the future directions, especially in dental sector. Furthermore, a flowchart is outlined describing the procedure from the patient to the final 3-D object, presenting the possible alternatives in the process. Finally, an example is presented, decribing the process of the construction of high accurate surgical guided templates in dental implantology, through rapid prototyping.
