Novel N-doped carbon nanonet flakes (NCNFs), consisting of three-dimensional interconnected carbon nanotube and penetrable mesopore channels were synthesized in the assistance of a hybrid catalytic template of silica-coated-linear polyethyleneimine (PEI). Resorcinol-formaldehyde resin and melamine were used as precursors for carbon and nitrogen, respectively, which were spontaneously formed on the silica-coated-PEI template and then annealed at 700 °C in a N2 atmosphere to be transformed into the hierarchical 3D N-doped carbon nanonetworks. The obtained NCNFs possess high surface area (946 m2 g−1), uniform pore size (2–5 nm), and excellent electron and ion conductivity, which were quite beneficial for electrochemical double-layered supercapacitors (EDLSs). The supercapacitor synthesized from NCNFs electrodes exhibited both extremely high capacitance (up to 613 F g−1 at 1 A g−1) and excellent long-term capacitance retention performance (96% capacitive retention after 20,000 cycles), which established the current processing among the most competitive strategies for the synthesis of high performance supercapacitors.

ZnO is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs); however, its practical application is hindered primarily by its large volume variation upon lithiation. To overcome this drawback, we synthesized ZnO/graphene composites using the combination of a simple hydrothermal reaction and spray drying. These composites consisted of well-dispersed ZnO nanorods anchored to graphene. The folded three-dimensional graphene spheres provided a high conductivity, high surface area, and abundant defects. LIB with an anode composed of our novel ZnO/graphene material demonstrated a high initial discharge capacity of 1583 mAh g−1 at 200 mA g−1.

Rationally engineered anode materials with high specific capacities and rate capability are essential for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this paper, a free-standing anode composed of Co3S4 nanosheets arrays and carbon cloth (abbreviated Co3S4@CC) was fabricated for high performance LIBs. The three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon cloth could not only improve the conductivity but also boost Li[Formula: see text] transfer and increase contact area for reactions. Besides, the porous thin Co3S4 nanosheets possessing strong interaction with carbon cloth by formation of C–S bond and high surface area could facilitate the mitigation of volume expansion and reduction of Li[Formula: see text] diffusion distance, coupling with efficient contact with electrolytes during cycling process. As expected, the freestanding Co3S4@CC anode presents pseudocapacitance-dominated storage behavior with a very high specific capacity of 847[Formula: see text]mAh g[Formula: see text] at 250[Formula: see text]mA g[Formula: see text] after 100 cycles and good rate capability for LIBs. This work provides an approach for designing metal sulfides with high capacities and rate capability for LIBs, especially flexible LIBs.
