. Simulation of the FSW process is a complex issue, as it implies interactions between thermal and mechanical phenomena and the quality of the welding depends on many factors. In order to reduce the time of the experimental tests, which can be long and expensive, numerical simulation of the FSW process has been tried during the last ten years. However, there still remain aspects that cannot be completely simulated. In this paper the authors present the steps of the numerical simulation using the finite elements method, in order to evaluate the boundary conditions of the model and the geometry of the tools by using the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) adaptive mesh controls.

Abstract. Excessive groundwater withdrawal can cause land subsidence and earth fissures. The initiation and propagation of earth fissures are related to tensile failure and crack propagation in soils. Based on fracture mechanics, the crack band model (CBM), one of the smear crack models which is relatively easy to construct and convenient to be integrated into standard finite element codes is used in this paper. The calculated results of CBM are less dependent on the sizes of finite elements. The model was applied to simulate the formation and propagation of earth fissures in the hydrostratigraphic units with a bedrock ridge. The simulated positions and patterns of earth fissures coincide with field observations, suggesting that the modeling approach is adept to simulate the initiation and propagation of earth fissures due to groundwater withdrawal.

The laminar isothermal mixing of a viscoplastic fluid is considered in the absence of any free surface and when the material can be modelled using a Bingham constitutive equation. The material is mixed by a rotating cylindrical tank and a fixed anchor impeller. A two-dimensional numerical simulation is performed with a finite elements method. The effects of viscoplasticity and inertia are related to an Oldroyd (Od) and to a Reynolds (Re) number. Stream lines, vortices, yield surfaces and power consumption are shown and analysed depending on the value of Od and Re parameters.

This paper investigated the anti-penetration performance of different sandwich structures plate using numerical simulation method. Finite elements models of the bullet and sandwich plate were established. The penetration performance of sandwich plate by bullet was simulated by software of LS-DYNA and dynamic response of the bullet during the penetration process was got. The results show that the anti-penetration performance is different because of the different cores in the plate. Besides, the density of the aluminum foam core has a direct effect on the performance. This paper could provide some reference for the designing of sandwich structures.

In this research, the principle of diamagnetic levitation is described briefly. The application perspectives of diamagnetic levitation and its advantages are as well discussed. By utilizing the magneto-Archimedes Effect to lift different seeds, the experimental procedures and parameters are provided which include magnetic characteristics of magnets and ratios of magneto-Archimedes solution. The theoretical derivation and finite elements simulation of force when the seeds suspend are conducted. These resolving formulas, methods of numerical simulation as well as means of experiments are meaningful as reference to the researches in this field.
