Abstract The development of the composite materials in the past decades has made the composite materials more and more widely used in various engineering fields. The mechanical properties of the composite materials are gradually improved, especially the impact resistance. In this article, the damage of carbon fiber foam sandwich structure (material grade: W-3021FF/H60) under different sandwich thicknesses and impact energies was studied. Ultrasonic C-scan was used to measure the depth and area of impact damage area. Finally, the impact energy and foam core thickness on impact damage was analyzed by test results. The results show that the impact damage depth and area of foam sandwich structure were positively related to the impact energy, and with the increase in the impact energy, the growth rate of damage depth and damage area changes; the greater the thickness of the foam core was, the stronger the span-direction guiding energy for impact energy, the larger the damage area and the smaller the damage depth. Under the same energy, the more the layers of carbon fiber cloth with the foam sandwich structure, the larger the impact damage depth and the smaller the impact damage area. The proportion of ±45° ply in the foam sandwich structure can improve its impact resistance.

This paper presents insights into the blast response of sandwich panels with lightweight foam cores and asymmetric (different thicknesses) glass fibre epoxy face sheets. Viscously damped elastic vibrations were observed in the laminates (no core), while the transient response of the sandwich panels was more complex, especially after the peak displacement was observed. The post-peak residual oscillations in the sandwich panels were larger and did not decay as significantly with time when compared to the equivalent mass laminate panel test. Delamination was the predominant mode of failure on the thinner facesheet side of the sandwich panel, whereas cracking and matrix failure were more prominent on the thicker side (which was exposed to the blast). The type of constituent materials used and testing conditions, including the clamping method, influenced the resulting failure modes observed. A probable sequence of damage in the sandwich panels was proposed, based on the transient displacement measurements, a post-test failure analysis, and consideration of the stress wave propagation through the multilayered, multimaterial structure. This work demonstrates the need for detailed understanding of the transient behaviour of multilayered structures with significant elastic energy capacity and a wide range of possible damage mechanisms. The work should prove valuable to structural engineers and designers considering the deployment of foam-core sandwich panels or fibre reinforced polymer laminates in applications when air-blast loading may pose a credible threat.

Abstract In this study, a generative method was introduced to determine the optimal design of low-density polymer foam core sandwiches using finite element analysis (FEA) and multi-objective optimization of design variables without needing experiments. The method was also assessed. The sandwich structures were designed based on woven plain carbon fiber fabrics, PVC foam core, and polymer epoxy matrix. The design variables are the core density (40, 48, 60 kg/m3) and the core thickness (16, 20, 25 mm). The sandwich configurations were subjected to FEA under the three-point bending (TPB) loads. The force-reaction curves obtained from FEA were compared to experimental data available in the literature. Excellent agreement was achieved between the experimental and FEA simulated results at the linear elastic region of the curves. Thus, it allowed predicting the bending stiffness of the sandwiches via TPB analysis. Besides, a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to determine the effects of parameters on sandwich mass and bending load capacity. Multi-objective optimization of design variables was also carried out according to the constructed mathematical models. The method provided in this study eases both designer’s and researcher’s work to obtain the optimal design variables without making costly experiments.

Abstract In this study, the impact behavior of sandwich panels of natural rubber-based syntactic foam cores with aluminum face sheets was investigated experimentally and with the help of finite element analysis (FEA). Syntactic foam cores were produced byadding glass bubbles (GB) to the natural rubber (NR). Natural rubber was dissolved at room temperature with chemical solvents mixed with glass bubbles at 10, 20, and 30 weight percentages. Very low density (~0.8 g × cm-3) and high compressible foams were obtained depending on the GB weight percentages. Aluminum face sheets and the NR/GB syntactic foam core developed were joined by adhesive bonding to produce sandwich beam specimens. The sandwich beams manufactured in this way were subjected to impact loading under three-point bending boundary conditions experimentally. The experimental results were compared with finite element simulation results under the same loading and boundary conditions. The damage mechanism of the sandwich panels devised were analyzed. According to the results, natural rubber containing an additive of 20 wt.-% GBs showed better impact resistance than the others.
