The ferrite aluminate cement (FAC) could rapidly lose fluidity or workability due to its excessive hydration rate, and greatly reduce the construction performance. Chemical admixtures are commonly used to provide the workability of cement-based materials. In this study, to ensure required fluidity of FAC, chemically different water reducing agents are incorporated into the FAC pastes. The experiments are performed with aliphatic water reducing agent (AP), polycarboxylic acid water reducing agent (PC) and melamine water reducing agent (MA), respectively. Influence of the water reducing agents on fluidity, setting time, hydration process, hydration product and zeta potential of the fresh cement pastes is investigated. The results show that PC has a better dispersion capacity compared to AP and MA. Besides decreasing water dosage, PC also acts as a retarder, significantly increasing the setting times, delaying the hydration rate and leading to less ettringite in the hydration process of FAC particles. The water reducing agents molecules are adsorbed on the surface of positively charged minerals and hydration products, however, for PC, steric hindrance from the long side chain of PC plays a critical role in dispersing cement particles, whereas AP and MA acting through an electrostatic repulsion force.

In the cement industry, SO2 and NOx are generally removed separately. There are many problems, such as large area, high investment cost, secondary pollution and so on. Desulfurization and denitrification technology have become a frontier research direction in the field of air pollution control. In this paper, rice husk ash and carbide slag were compounded and modified to prepare modified rice husk ash-carbide slag composite absorbent, and its desulfurization and denitrification performance and mechanism were studied. The results showed that the NO conversion and SO2 conversion of the modified rice husk ash-carbide slag composite absorbent increased by 44% and 2%, respectively, at 700 °C. Fibrous calcium silicate and calcium silicoaluminate hydrates were formed during the hydration process, which made the specific surface area of the absorbent larger and provided more reactive sites. The hydration process increases the content of oxygen-containing functional groups, decreases the hydroxyl/ether C–O functional groups, and increases the content of carboxyl–COO functional groups are conducive to the denitrification reaction.

The paper studies features of the hydration process of the modified blended cement for fiber cement panels (FCP) using differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. It is found that deeper hydration process in silicate phase, denser and finer crystalline structure form in fiber cement matrix based on the modified blended cement. Generalization of this result to the case of fiber cement panels makes it possible to achieve formation of a denser and homogeneous structure with increased physical and mechanical properties.
