AbstractIn this paper gelatin beads reinforced with natural hemp hurd have been produced as pH sensitive devices for the release of eugenol, as green pesticide. The composites beads, with a mean diameter of about 1 mm, were obtained by polymer droplet gelation in sunflower oil. Thermal properties were evaluated showing no noticeable difference after the introduction of hemp hurd. Barrier properties demonstrated an improvement of hydrophobization. The introduction of 5% w/w of hemp hurd led to a reduction of sorption coefficient of about 85% compared to unloaded gelatin beads. Besides, the diffusion coefficient decreased, introducing 5% w/w of hemp hurd, from 8.91 × 10−7 to 0.77 × 10−7 cm2/s. Swelling and dissolution phenomena of gelatin beads were studied as function of pH. The swelling of gelatin beads raised as pH increased up to 2.3 g/g, 9.1 g/g and 27.33 g/g at pH 3, 7 and 12, respectively. The dissolution rate changed from 0.034 at pH 3 to 0.077 h−1 at pH 12. Release kinetics of eugenol at different pH conditions were studied. The released eugenol after 24 h is 98%, 91%, 81 and 63% w/w (pH 3), 87%, 62%, 37 and 32 wt% (pH 7) and 81%, 68%, 60 and 52 wt% (pH 12) for unloaded gelatin beads and gelatin beads with 1%, 3 and 5% of hemp hurd, respectively. The eugenol release behavior was demonstrated to be highly sensitive to the pH release medium, which allows to tune such devices as green pesticide release systems in soils with different level of acidity/basicity.

Isotactic polypropylene (iPP) composites containing magnesium oxysulfate whisker (MOSw) or lauric acid-modified MOSw (LA-MOSw) were prepared via melt mixing in a torque rheometer. Scanning electron microscopy pictures showed that the interface between MOSw and iPP matrix was defined, whereas a vague interface was seen in the iPP–LA-MOSw composites. Mechanical properties of these two groups of composites were investigated in terms of tensile, notched impact, and flexural behavior aspects for the purposes of studying toughening effect of MOSw and LA-MOSw. Tensile results showed that yield strength of composites further reduced with the presence of LA, indicating the decrease in interfacial interaction bewteen iPP matrix and MOSw. As such, LA-MOSw performed better than MOSw in toughening of iPP matrix. Flexural strength and modulus of iPP–MOSw composites increased sharply with the increase in MOSw content, while less dependence on the LA-MOSw content indicated that MOSw was deemed beneficial to increase the stiffness. In addition, flammability properties were investigated by cone calorimetry experiment. The results showed that the peak heat release rate apparently reduced with addition of MOSw or LA-MOSw. Besides, iPP–LA-MOSw composites showed higher specific extinction area values than iPP–MOSw composites, which meant the weaker smoke suppression effect of LA-MOSw. It was chiefly because of the incomplete combustion caused by the continuous and complete charred (MgO) shield. The presence of LA was another possible reason.

Abstract During 2015 and 2016, studies were conducted at Absaraka and Dickinson, North Dakota to evaluate the impacts of hemp (applied at 1156 m3 ha−1) and commercial paper mulch, as well as soil-applied biochar (applied at 11.25 m3 ha−1), on weed suppression and strawberry growth during the establishment year, and on weed suppression and strawberry yield during the production year, in a matted row production (MRP) system. During 2015, biochar influenced dry weed biomass only within the hemp mulch, with slightly more weed biomass associated with biochar application compared to zero biochar (3.1 vs 0.4 g m−2), suggesting that biochar may have increased weed germination and/or emergence from beneath hemp mulch. Biochar application also slightly increased soil pH, from 6.9 in non-amended soil to 7.0 in amended soil. Strawberry runner number during 2015 was greater in association with hemp or paper mulch compared to zero mulch (4.5 and 4.9 vs 2.4 runners plant −1, respectively). This result mirrored a similar differential in per berry mass across sites (7.6 and 7.4 vs 6.2 g berry −1 for hemp mulch, paper mulch and zero mulch, respectively). These results may be related to hemp and paper mulch reducing maximum soil temperatures during summer 2015. During the establishment year, both hemp and paper mulch suppressed weeds well compared to zero mulch, although at Absaraka hemp mulch provided slightly better weed suppression than paper mulch. During the production year, both mulches continued to suppress weeds compared to zero mulch at Dickinson. However, at Absaraka, only hemp mulch provided weed suppression compared to zero mulch, possibly because of faster paper degradation caused by greater numbers of large precipitation events and greater relative humidity at Absaraka compared to Dickinson. Weeds were removed from plots during 2015 to allow separation of weed suppression from other possible mulch impacts; therefore, yield data do not reveal striking differences among mulch treatments. Because previous research has demonstrated the impact of weed management during the establishment of strawberries in a matted row system, we concluded that hemp mulch may provide more durable weed suppression compared to paper mulch, which would increase strawberry yield protection in an MRP system. Material cost may be an issue for implementing hemp mulch, as hemp hurd cost was 25 times paper mulch at the application rates used in this study. However, hemp mulch could still be a beneficial option, especially for organic strawberry growers desiring a renewable and environmentally sound replacement for plastic mulch who are able to find affordable local sources of this material.

Magnesium oxysulfate (MOS) cement is a typical eco-friendly cementitious material, which presents excellent performances. In this work, a novel multiscale modeling strategy is proposed to simulate the hydration and pore structure of MOS cement system. This work collected and evaluated the Gibbs free energy of formation for main hydrates and equilibrium constant of main reactions in MOS cement system based on a first principle calculation using Material Studio. Followingly, the equilibrium phase compositions of MOS cement system were simulated through PHREEQC to investigate the molar ratio dependence of equilibrium phase compositions. Results showed that large M (MgO/MgSO4) was beneficial for the formation of 5Mg(OH)2·MgSO4·7H2O (Phase 517) and large H (H2O/MgSO4) tended to decompose MOS cement paste and cause leaching. The microstructure-based method visualized the hydration status of MOS cement systems at initial and ultimate stages via MATLAB and the results showed that large M was significant to reduce porosity, and similar results for the case of small H. Fractal analysis confirms that fractal dimension of pore structure (Df) was significantly decreased after the hydration of MOS and was positively correlated to the porosity of the paste. In addition, it can be referred that large M and small H were beneficial for modifying the microstructure of MOS paste by decreasing the value of Df.
