Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the performance of a fastener composite coating system, sherardized (SD) coating/zinc-aluminum (ZA) coating whether it has good performance in marine environment. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, SD coating was fabricated on fastener surface by solid-diffusion method. ZA coating was fabricated by thermal sintering method. Corrosion behaviours of the composite coating were investigated with potentiodynamic polarization curves, open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods. Findings Neutral salt spray (NSS) and deep sea exposure tests revealed that the composite coating had excellent corrosion resistance. Polarization curve tests showed that corrosion current density of the sample with composite coating was significantly decreased, indicating an effective corrosion protection of the composite coating. OCP measurement of the sample in NaCl solution demonstrated that the composite coating had the best cathodic protection effect. The good corrosion resistance of the composite coating was obtained by the synergy of SD and ZA coating. Practical implications SD/ZA coating can be used in marine environment to prolong the life of carbon steel fastener. Social implications SD/ZA composite coating can reduce the risk and accident caused by failed fastener, avoid huge economic losses. Originality/value A new kind of composite coating was explored to protect the carbon steel fastener in marine environment. And the composite coating has the long-term anti-corrosion performance both in simulated and marine environment test.

Electroless nickel phosphorous-Nylon 66 composite coating was done on low carbon steel. The incorporation of nylon particles in electroless nickel phosphorous coating is conformed from Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies. EN nylon composite coating shows high coating thickness and corrosive strength than EN coating for similar condition. Nylon particle were evenly distributed in EN matrix and contributed to corrosion resistance of the coating.

Ni-B/Ni-B-B4C composite coatings on the substrate of medium-carbon steel (45#) were successfully fabricated by electroless plating in a low temperature bath. The corrosion resistance of Ni-B coating were examined by using electrochemical workstation. The results indicated that there are no pores and cracks and other defects at the interface between the substrate and composite coating. It was found that the corrosion resistance of Ni-B coating increased and then decreased with the addition of NaBH4 increasing, and the best addition in plating bath was about 0.9 g/L. While the corrosion resistance of Ni-B coating heat-treated at 400°C with NaBH4 addition 0.9 g/L was the worst.

Wide application prospects of graphene in the corrosion protection coatings field are owing to its excellent mechanical properties, outstanding chemical stability, corrosion resistance, and high corrosion resistance. Anti-corrosion composite was prepared using multilayer graphene powder as a filler and epoxy resin in this work to investigate the effect of graphene compositions in the zinc-rich epoxy (ZRE) as the modified anti-corrosion coating for carbon steel pipe. Using SEM for morphology along with the electrochemical performance was associated with changed content composite coating of graphene and pure epoxy resin coating. The measurement for open-circuit potential (OCP), the potentiostat polarization curve (Tafel Plot), and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of the coating were conducted in order to investigate the influence of additional of graphene on the basic properties and corrosion resistance. From the experimental results, the increasing content of graphene led by the increasing value of OCP as the test system was stable, also the coating of high content graphene sustained a moderately high OCP ability with the increase of immersion time. From the results in the industrial environment, 0.1wt% Graphene + 99.9wt% ZRE in a 240μm coating layer would be sufficient as the corrosion rate is 0.0087204mmpy and three times lower compare to 100wt% ZRE. In a nutshell, the addition of graphene improves the impenetrability of the composite coating.

A Zr-based amorphous composite coating was fabricated by laser cladding and remelting on plain carbon steel. The amorphous phase contents of coatings were tailored by controlling the power density. The effect of amorphous phase content along the depth direction on the microhardness and corrosion resistance of the coating was studied. The results showed that the content of amorphous phase significantly decreased from the remelted layer to the cladded layer. In addition, it was found that the maximum microhardness of the coating were about 1061 HV0.1, observed 200 μm beneath the surface. Potentiodynamic polarization studies in 3.56 wt.% NaCl solution indicated that the remelted layer exhibited excellent corrosion resistance due to the high amount of amorphous phase.
