Blue luminescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were prepared from cyanobacteria by a hydrothermal method. The PL quantum yields of the obtained CQDs was 5.30%. Cyanobacteria-based carbon quantum dots/polyvinyl alcohol/nanocellulose composite films were prepared, which could emit bright blue under UV light. FTIR characterization showed that the composite films had hydroxyl groups on the surface and no new groups were formed after combining the three materials. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra revealed that the emission of the prepared CQDs was excitation dependent. Studies on the water resistance performance and light barrier properties of the composite films showed that they possessed higher water resistance properties and better UV/infrared light barrier properties. Therefore, we report the cyanobacteria-based carbon quantum dots/polyvinyl alcohol/nanocellulose composite films have the potential to be applied in flexible packaging materials, anti-fake materials, UV/infrared light barrier materials and so on.

The application of cellulose materials for packaging usage has attracted a large amount of attention in recent years. In this study, cellulose was dissolved in a cold NaOH/urea solution. Transparent, strong, and flexible regenerated cellulose/polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) films were fabricated via a solution blending and casting process. The physicochemical properties of the neat RC films, PVOH films, and RC-PVOH blend films were characterized via scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, tensile tests, gas permeability, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The results of the physicochemical characterizations indicated that the RC-PVOH composite films with various PVOH contents yielded strong properties in terms of optical transparency, thermal stability, mechanical strength, and oxygen barrier performance. The RC-PVOH films with 8% PVOH loading exhibited a peak degradation temperature of 362 °C, a tensile strength of 80.8 MPa ± 0.3 MPa, and an oxygen permeability of 2.40 cm3 x μm/m2 x 24 h x kPa. The RC-PVOH composite films could be a competitive alternative as a packaging material to replace petroleum-based plastics.

This study aimed to improve the strength and hydrophobic properties of polyvinyl alcohol/microfibrillated-cellulose composite films and thereby solve problems such as the poor water resistance of polyvinyl alcohol films and defects in the packaging. Polyvinyl alcohol/microfibrillated-cellulose composite films were prepared with the silane coupling agent KH151. The mechanical, optical, crystalline, and other properties of the composite films were tested. After the modification of the polyvinyl alcohol/microfibrillated-cellulose films, their strength and hydrophobic and barrier property were greatly improved. Moreover, their oxygen transmittance decreased by 85.9%, and the water contact angle of the film surface increased by 44%. The internal structure of a polyvinyl alcohol/microfibrillated-cellulose film is formed by KH151, which improves the strength and barrier properties of the film, forms an alkane-based layer on the film surface, and improves the hydrophobic property of the film. Thermogravimetric analysis shows that the thermal stability of composite materials has been greatly improved.

Cellulose has a potential to become a key resource in the development of biodegradable film composites. In this work, cellulose was modified by using 2-(Trifluromethyl)benzoylchloride by base-catalyzed reaction. Modification of cellulose was confirmed by IR studies. The biodegradable composite films were developed by film casting method using modified cellulose with Poly(vinyl alcohol) in different compositions. The film composites were characterized by mechanical, moisture absorption, gas barrier, and biodegradable properties. Obtained films have shown transparency and flexibility and displayed good mechanical properties. Film composites also showed good biodegradability. Better barrier properties showed by film composites as the percentage of modified cellulose increased. This indicates the importance of modified cellulose as a reinforcing agent. After evaluating these properties of film composites, we came to conclusion that these biocomposites can be used to membrane and packaging applications.
