In recent years, serious attention has been paid around the world to the chemical and biotechnological processing of biomass of easily renewable plant raw materials. One of the most mass-produced aliphatic alcohols is ethyl alcohol. The aim of this work was gas chromatographic analysis of the chemical composition of ethyl alcohol obtained from plants of the genus Asteraceae (dahlia and jerusalem artichoke tubers, chicory and big burdock roots) growing on the territory of Kazakhstan. The article discusses the methods of obtaining and application of ethyl alcohol. The results of the analysis of the chemical composition of ethyl alcohol obtained from plants of the genus Asteraceae are presented. As a result of the study, alcohols were obtained in different concentrations. The chemical composition of ethyl alcohol was determined by gas chromatography. The impurity composition of ethyl alcohol obtained from various types of raw materials is also shown. The composition of impurities in various samples of ethanol and alcohol-containing products is considered in detail. The results of the study were discussed, and the peculiarities of using the gas chromatography method were shown.

The conversion of monomer to polymer is not complete in denture base resins and residual monomer left can cause mucosal irritation, inflammation, and allergic reactions in tissues adjacent to dentures. The mechanical properties of denture base resins have been found to be lacking with increased residual monomer content. Therefore, it is desirable to reduce the residual monomer content in the processed denture. In the present study Gas chromatography method was used to determine the levels of residual methyl methacrylate monomer of two different brands of heat cure denture base resins processed by two different polymerization cycles. The study concluded that while processing the denture sufficient length of boiling phase should be given and for each brand, manufacturer’s instructions should be strictly followed while selecting polymerization cycle.

A novel method for ultrashort capillary column gas chromatography (GC) analysis is introduced, which employs on-column injection and detection and rapid temperature programming. Using 10–20 cm long capillary columns, results showed that the method provides efficient and very rapid separations for relatively simple mixtures. Moreover, the on-column aspect of the method used here is demonstrated to avoid the extra column analyte degradation that can occur in traditional approaches to such separations. As a result, the developed method allows for the first time the GC analysis of some very large and (or) highly thermally labile analytes, such as polypeptides and drug molecules that are normally prone to decomposition. As an application, this method is further used to monitor pharmaceutical degradant formation as a function of temperature and was found to provide similar results to those obtained from conventional high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. Overall, the findings indicate that this ultrashort GC column approach could be useful in these areas and potentially others, where relatively simple GC analysis and universal flame ionization detection is desirable.
