The sustainable development of our societies demands strong efforts on scientific and technological research while informing and educating students and the general population. Air pollution and road safety hazards constitute two main public health problems that are insufficiently addressed pedagogically. With this work, we aim to contribute to tackeling the problem by presenting the results of scientific research on the development of photocatalytic, superhydrophobic, and self-cleaning recycled asphalt mixtures to achieve an eco-social friendly and smart material able to mitigate socioenvironmental impacts. The functionalization of asphalt is implemented by spraying particles’ solutions over a conventional AC 10, then evaluated by dye degradation and wettability. Firstly, different particles’ solutions (with nano-TiO2 and/or micro-PTFE under water, ethyl alcohol, and dimethyl ketone) were sprayed to select the best solution (BS), which was composed of TiO2-PTFE (4 g/L each) in ethyl alcohol. Two successive spraying coatings (diluted epoxy resin and BS) were performed over conventional and recycled AC 10 (with reclaimed asphalt pavement and steel slags). Their efficiency decreases with the highest resin amounts. The best results were obtained with 0.25 g resin and BS. For the lowest resin amount, all mixtures achieved superhydrophobicity and performed similarly regarding wettability.

The present study attempts to find out the effect of some fish preservatives in the laboratory, such as alcohol and dilute formalin, on some biological characteristics related to the body measurements of those fish preserved in these materials. The fish used in this study were the local Planiliza abu. The processes of expansion and contraction of the bodies of fish preserved in diluted formalin solution at a concentration of 10% and diluted ethyl alcohol solution at a concentration of 70%. As that the standard length of the specimens of this study, which are separately preserved in formalin 10% and alcohol 70%, in a completely isolated are fluctuating in change. Constant shrinkage in head length in both diluted formalin and alcohol. Most fish bodies preserved in formalin at a concentration of 10% gain significant weight gain, in contrast to alcohol preservation.

Abstract Natural ovicidal and repellent agents against Periplaneta americana are in urgent need, and plant essential oils (EOs) can assume this role quite readily. In this study, ovicidal and repellent activities against Periplaneta americana of EOs from Cymbopogon citratus, Cinnamomum verum, Eucalyptus globulus, Illicium verum, and Zanthoxylum limonella in soybean oil and in ethyl alcohol were determined by topical and dual-choice assays, as well as 10% cypermethrin and a combined formulation of 5% C. verum EO + 5% I. verum EO. Cypermethrin at 10% provided the highest toxicity (100% inhibition rate) against the eggs, but only slightly higher than that (99.3%) provided by the combined EO formulation, while the highest repellent activity against the adults was provided by the combined formulation (89.5% repelled cockroaches at 48 h after treatment). In addition, all EO formulations in soybean oil provided higher ovicidal and repellent activities than in ethyl alcohol. To conclude, the combined EO formulation in soybean oil can replace cypermethrin because their efficacy was nearly equivalent, but the combination should be much safer to use.

With rising energy prices, the development and implementation of innovative energy-saving technologies is a priority in the production of rectified alcohol and bioethanol.  By-products of distillation are the head fraction of ethyl alcohol, fusel oil, and fusel alcohol. Existing methods of joint processing of the head and fusel fractions in one column do not provide effective removal together head and intermediate impurities, which adversely affects the quality of commercial alcohol. The aim of the work was to develop methods of joint processing of the head and fusel fractions in the column for the concentration of impurities of cyclic action, to determine the optimal technological parameters of the column, and to test the efficiency of innovative methods in production conditions: to determine the degree of extraction, the concentration of volatile impurities Three schemes of processing of the head and fusel fractions are given. The method I allowed to free the bottom products from the head and intermediate impurities of alcohol and use such a liquid for hydroselection in the epuration column. Method II allowed significantly improving the physicochemical parameters of the bottom water-alcohol products, improving the quality of rectified ethyl alcohol by more complete removal of volatile organic impurities from the zones of their maximum accumulation and reducing their content in the reflux entering the irrigation column. Method III allowed ensuring maximum removal of volatile head and intermediate impurities and reducing the loss of ethyl alcohol with the concentrate of impurities. The use of innovative methods allows for joint processing of the main and fusel fractions in the production of rectified alcohol and bioethanol, to increase the yield of marketable alcohol by 3.8%.

In this article is studied the biological conditions of imidacloprid and acetamiprid pesticides under laboratory conditions and the storage of the objects in a state preserved in ethyl alcohol. There were determined in the composition of the biological object stored in the laboratory the imidacloprid was detected after 13.07% in 90 days and in objects preserved with ethyl alcohol - 14.05%. When the biological object containing acetamiprid was analyzed after 90 days, it was found to be 4.45%, and when the object was stored under 95% ethyl alcohol5.72%. In the analysis of acute poisoning cases with imidacloprid and acetamiprid, it is recommended that their shelf life should be taken into consideration.

Abstract The development of convective flow in a layer of ethyl alcohol when heating one of the vertical walls of a rectangular cavity was investigated experimentally. Thermal films were obtained, whose processing allowed plotting in time the distribution of temperature and temperature gradients on the free surface of the liquid layer and the opposite thin vertical wall of the cavity after the flow of heated liquid on it.

Abstract The evolution of the spatial form of the flow versus the Rayleigh number in layers with two rigid horizontal boundaries and layers with a free surface is experimentally investigated depending on the Rayleigh and Marangoni numbers. The experiments were carried out with layers of ethyl alcohol and water. A thermal imager was used to measure temperature fields on free surfaces of liquids.

The article presents an overview of current literature on the problem of forensic diagnosis of acute poisoning by ethanol and its surrogates. Morphological and forensic chemical criteria for the diagnosis of ethanol intoxication are presented, variants of patho- and thanatogenesis are described, as well as modern methods for diagnosing these poisonings. Aim of the work. Review of current literature data on the problem of forensic diagnosis of acute poisoning by ethanol and its surrogates. Conclusion. In our opinion, it is necessary to introduce into the practical work of the bureau of forensic examinations new promising technologies for the diagnosis of acute intoxication with ethyl alcohol and its surrogates.
