This paper outlines the basic development background of the Class 58 locomotive and main design features, with areas of design development resulting from the introduction into service in 1983–85 of the first build of thirty-five locomotives and detail changes in design being applied to the second batch of fifteen locomotives authorized in 1984. This locomotive design developed from a joint exercise between British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) and the then Chief Mechanical and Electrical Engineer (CM and EE), British Railways Board (BRB) in 1977 which resulted in BREL fully participating in the design development to utilize modern manufacturing methods. The Class 58 was designed by BR specifically for freight duties and is based on a strength underframe with bonnet-type structure and equipment in modular assemblies.

The features of application and advantages of such systems over stationary are shown, the general trends in the design of the portable guard and reconnaissance-signaling systems are to described. The article discusses the features of the transportation of timber by various types of transport currently used in the Russian Federation. The conditions for their application are given, taking into account the availability of the used transport routes, as well as the capabilities of the region. The main design features of these types of transport are described. The most important advantages of using road transport for hauling timber in comparison with land, water, pipeline and air transport are presented.

In September 1974, sixty diesel-electric freight locomotives, designated Class 56, were ordered by British Railways to meet an anticipated upsurge in coal and freight traffic. This new freight locomotive has been designed and constructed employing latest developments in traction technology with a.c. electrical power generation and electronic control equipment. Considerably less routine maintenance is thus required and carried out at extended periods. The first thirty were purchased from Brush Electrical Machines Limited (BEML) being constructed in Romania and later locomotives at British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) Doncaster Works. Further orders for seventy-five locomotives have since been placed with BREL, Doncaster. This paper outlines the main design features, methods of construction used at Doncaster Works and regional utilization and service experience since 1977.

The presented work investigated the extent by which Reynolds number determines the drag coefficient for high porosity nets at a low angle of attack. A simple prawn trawl model that incorporates the main design features of prawn trawls employed in Australia was developed. Four trawl models of various high porosities were tested in a flume tank with respect to drag and shape over a range of flow velocities. The physical trawl model was analysed as a system of independent plane net sheets, each with an orientation to the flow estimated from analysis of stereo-vision data. The main finding was that the drag coefficient was weakly dependent on the Reynolds number in the range typical for prawn trawl operations, 1000<Re<1700. These combined findings imply that trawler operators can approximately estimate prawn net drag from a function containing trawl twine area, towing speed and spread ratio.
