Governor Decree of North Kalimantan No. 26 in 2014 concerning Management of Bombay Duck in the North Kalimantan Province Waters was established in order to address over-exploitation of bombay duck (Harpadon nehereus) population. Fisheries sanctuary is the feasible solution that was agreed by comprehensive stakeholder discussion. This research aims to extract and elaborate our experiences on establishing fisheries sanctuary in the Bangkudulis waters which focus on science communication and in the fisheries sanctuary planning. The acoustic and larva survey conducted to support the consensus and to proof the traditional ecological knowledge of the communities. The results showed that the proposed conservation area of the Bangkudulis waters has significant ecological function to ensure the sustainability of bombay duck population. The distribution and abundance of larva and juveniles were found higher in that area. The approach and challenges to deal with ecological and socio-economic aspects as well as recommendations were discussed in this paper.

North Kalimantan Province, notably Tarakan City marine waters, is one of the important fishing ground in boundary area among Sulu Sulawesi Marine Ecoregion. It produces approximately 100 mt/annum of Bombay duck (<em>Harpadon nehereus</em>) with valued of US$ 750,000. The sustainability of this fishery is a crucially concern given the following: substantial economic contribution, significant dependence of small-scale fishers on this species for their livelihoods. The fishing intensities considerable and growing threats to their habitats. To evaluate the vulnerability of individual species to over exploitation, the spawning potential ratio (SPR) approach applied to describe the status of its existing fisheries. This approach provides the ability to determine fishing mortality as reference points to enhance its sustainability. The objective of this study is to understand this fish biomass resilience to harvesting. The calculated SPR based on the value of estimated length of first capture or Lc at 208 mm is equivalent to the SPR of 28%. With a base line of stocks are generally thought to risk recruitment declining when SPR &lt;20%, recent finding indicated that the existing fishery can be generally described as nearly fully exploited. In recognition of this sector’s has an ecological importance and socio-economic significance, the sustainable development of Bombay duck fisheries should be initiated through developing local fishery committee to provide a their local fishery management plan.

The direct surveillance conducted in month of September indicated that bombay duck fish is one of the fish catch yields in Ujung Pangkah and Weru Waters. The prohibition regulation of catching fish in breeding ground and spawning ground is the effort to prevent fish from over-exploitation. Therefore, it requires a research about reproduction aspects study of the bombay duck fish in macroscopical and microscopical way in order to obtain information stood for exploring and developing the bombay duck fish so as the fish can keep sustainable. This research is aimed to identify the reproduction aspects and the development stage of bombay duck fish gonad in macroscopical and microscopical way in Ujung Pangkah and Weru Waters. The research method applied was descriptive method by obtaining the data regarding reproduction aspects of bombay duck fish in macroscopical and microscopical way. As the result, the research showed that the reproduction aspects of bombay duck fish including maturing stage in the range of length between 28,6 cm, mature stage in the range of length between 26,1-27,2 cm and the resting stage occured 30,5 cm. The development of bombay duck fish gonad in macroscopical way in Ujung Pangkah and Weru Waters includes first maturity rate, second maturity rate to third maturity rate and third maturity rate. In contrast, The development of bombay duck fish gonad in microscopical way in Ujung Pangkah and Weru Waters includes second maturity rate, third maturity rate and fifth maturity rate.

The present study was conducted to investigate the growth parameters, length-weight relationshipand diverse mortality rates of Bombay duck Harpadon nehereus, from North-eastern tip of the Bay of Bengal. The length weight data were collected from January to December 2017 where a total number of 2054individuals of both sex were analyzed. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters, the asymptotic length L?(cm), the growth constant K (year-1) and t0 were estimated as 38.50, 0.88, and -0.0181 years respectively. The growth performance index (Ø?) was found to be 3.115. The total length and body weight (L-W)relationship was found as W=0.004 L3.021, indicating that the growth rate showed a positive allometricpattern (b=3.021>3). The annual fishing morality rate (F) was 1.89, whereas the natural mortality rate (M)was 1.51. The obtained value of the exploitation rate (E= 0.56) indicated that the said population was inover-exploited condition.

Attempts were made to combine morphological and molecular techniques for identification and analysis of evolutionary relationship of commercially important marine lizardfish (Bombay duck) from the Bay of Bengal. For molecular identification, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was extracted using CTAB extraction protocol and 16S rRNA gene was amplified by PCR method. Morphological identification was supported by molecular data generated by 99% identity of BLAST search result of Harpadon nehereus. The nucleotide sequence of H. nehereus was 586 bp long and the G+C content was 51% and intraspecies polymorphic sites were 0.5%. According to interspecies polymorphic sites analysis, 4.9% polymorphism was observed when H. nehereus and H. microchir were compared. Phylogenetic tree was constructed and both the Harpadon spp. formed a monophyletic clade. This analysis will be used to study molecular diversity as well as conservation of this fish species. The current study describes the length-weight relationships and condition factor of Bombay duck, Harpadon nehereus from landings of Fishery Ghat, Chittagong. A total of 300 individuals caught by various mesh size of gill nets by commercial fishers were investigated from April 2016 to June 2016. On the basis of hypothetical cube law W=aLb, the variance of ‘b’ for both total length and standard length were estimated statistically (0.0090 and 0.0088 respectively). Using the value of t=1.96 at the 95% confidence limits for ‘b’ were estimated as 2.218 to 2.590 for total length-weight relationship and for standard length-weight relationship, 1.985 to 2.353 which indicated allometric growth pattern for both cases. The monthly relative condition factor during three months of observation (0.978, 1.033, and 1.097) showed no notable difference due to spawning strain, spent condition and lower feeding rate right after peak spawning season.Res. Agric., Livest. Fish.3(2): 355-360, August 2016
