This chapter presents a study into the impact of the professional doctorate as a learning opportunity for STEM professionals including engineers, pharmacists, nurses, STEM teachers, healthcare professionals, and computing professionals. The professional doctorate is a relatively new approach to doctoral study, which has much to offer to STEM. This form of doctoral study encourages the candidate to undertake project work which is based in, and contributes to, their professional practice. The candidates are experienced practitioners, who wish to raise their practice to doctoral level. This chapter presents a mixed methods study, which has collected and analyzed quantitative data obtained from a survey, qualitative data obtained from focus group sessions, and in-depth narrative accounts. Analysis of these data revealed a number of themes including the importance of trans-professional working, reflection, and development of “authentic” professional voice.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present one approach to the measurement of impact in a professional doctorate in education that encompasses discipline-based coursework and practice-embedded research. Design/methodology/approach – Quantitative and qualitative data on the impact of the doctoral program were collected at regular intervals, with a focus on students’ application of program content in their professional practice and on students’ professional growth. Findings – The research design and the findings are discussed in the context of the larger debate surrounding the measurement of doctoral impact and the value of online doctoral degrees for practitioners. Originality/value – This paper presents the systematic collection of data over four years in a newly developed professional doctorate in education.

IntroductionDisciplinary procedures can have a negative impact on the professional functioning of medical doctors. In this questionnaire study, doctors’ experience with open culture and support during a disciplinary procedure is studied to determine whether open culture and support are associated with perceived changes in the professional practice of doctors.MethodsAll doctors who received a warning or a reprimand from the Dutch Medical Disciplinary Board between July 2012 and August 2016 were invited to fill in a 60-item questionnaire concerning open culture, perceived support during the disciplinary procedure and the impact of the procedure on professional functioning as reported by doctors themselves. The response rate was 43% (n=294).ResultsA majority of doctors perceive their work environment as a safe environment in which to talk about and report incidents (71.2% agreed). Respondents felt supported by a lawyer or legal representative and colleagues (92.8% and 89.2%, respectively). The disciplinary procedure had effects on professional practice. Legal support and support from a professional confidant and a professional association were associated with fewer perceived changes to professional practice.ConclusionOur study shows that doctors who had been disciplined perceive their working environment as open. Doctors felt supported by lawyers and/or legal representatives and colleagues. Legal support was associated with less of a perceived impact on doctors’ professional practice.

Objetivo: Refletir teoricamente sobre a Política Nacional (brasileira) para Prevenção e Controle do Câncer na Rede de Atenção à Saúde das Pessoas com Doenças Crônicas e articulações na formação do enfermeiro e na prática profissional. Metodologia: Reflexão teórica, por meio de questionamentos das pesquisadoras, discussões em grupo e busca na literatura. Resultados: Os trabalhadores que atuam no cuidado ao paciente oncológico possuem papel essencial na efetivação dessa política. Porém, para que sejam implementadas, é necessário que seus princípios estabelecidos façam sentido na formação e nas práticas profissionais. Conclusão: O ensino reflexivo sobre essa política na formação do enfermeiro contribui para melhorias em sua prática, assim como, práticas reflexivas e melhor qualificadas certamente impactam positivamente na formação profissional. Conclusión: La enseñanza reflexiva sobre la política en la formación de enfermeros contribuye para mejoras en su práctica, como tal, prácticas reflexivas y más calificadas, sin duda, causan impacto positivo en las prácticas de formación profesional. Aim: To examine the impact of emotional intelligence on the effective implementation of a professional practice model in a specialised cancer centre. Methods: The study used a cross-sectional design with 580 frontline nurses at King Hussein Cancer Center, Jordan. The sample was selected using a convenience sampling technique. Data were collected using two self-administered questionnaires to measure emotional intelligence and professional practice. Results: The overall mean value of emotional intelligence was 5.60 out of 6 (SD=0.78), while the overall mean value for the implementation of the professional practice model was 4.76/5 (SD=0.59). The results showed that the overall mean value of emotional intelligence had a significant positive correlation with the effective implementation of the professional practice model (r=0.580, P<0.001), even after adjusting for the participants' demographics (P<0.001). Conclusion: Emotional intelligence can be considered a predictor for the effective implementation of a professional practice model.
