Strategies for the management of small bowel obstructions have changed significantly over the years. Nonoperative medical management has become the mainstay of treatment of many small bowel obstructions. However, the key to the management of small bowel obstructions is identifying those patients who need surgical intervention. Identification of those at risk for bowel ischemia and bowel death is an art as much as it is a science. Using the current literature and the past knowledge regarding small bowel obstructions, the clinician must carefully identify the signs and symptoms that suggest the need for operative intervention. Classification of the obstruction, history and physical examination, imaging, response to decompression and resuscitation, and resolution or progression of symptoms are the key factors influencing the management of small bowel obstructions.

Infrared thermography (IRT) is a noninvasive and safe method of displaying the temperature map of objects that can be used to detect hoof diseases and lameness to reduce significant financial costs and physically stress animals. A qualitative bibliometric method based on the analysis of publications by the authors themselves using sophisticated tools of scientific databases was applied in this work. This review presents the fundamentals of IRT as well as recent developments in IRT detection in dairy science, including preprocessing, segmentation, and classification of objects in IRT images. In addition, recent studies dealing with the detection of hoof diseases and lameness using IRT are reviewed. As a result of this study, select previous studies are confronted in terms of technical aspects of IRT measurements such as emissivity, distance, temperature range, and reflected air temperature. Subsequently, recommendations for future IRT measurements are discussed.

The paper analyzes research, technologies, and equipment related to wastewater heat utilization systems. The main factors influencing the development of the industry and the implementation of such systems are given. Such factors include: social, political, economic, technological, legal and environmental. The classification of technologies and equipment for wastewater heat utilization according to the place of heat extraction is given. Namely, low potential wastewater heat can be collected at the treatment plants, in sewer collectors leading to treatment plants and directly in houses. The paper describes the available research in the scientific literature on these three categories The global scientific community is working to create efficient wastewater heat recovery systems. The environmental situation requires greater use of wastewater recovery systems. An important issue is to increase awareness and education of the population, as this approach will increase the degree of implementation of wastewater heat utilization systems in residential buildings.

While the classification of psychiatric disorders has been critiqued for failing to adequately account for culture, the inclusion of the Cultural Formulation Interview (CFI) in the DSM-5 has been viewed as a promising development for the inclusion of cultural factors in diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. In this study, we assess the appropriateness, acceptability, and clinical utility of the CFI among outpatients in a Mexican psychiatric hospital. Our assessment included observations of psychiatric residents’ application of the CFI with 19 patients during routine outpatient visits, along with pre- and post-CFI interviews to determine providers’ and patients’ views of the CFI. The CFI was generally well received by providers and patients, viewed as a way of building trust and increasing providers’ understanding of contextual factors influencing mental illness, such as social support. However, the CFI questions specifically related to “culture” were of limited effect and both patients and providers did not view them as useful. We discuss implications for the clinical assessment of cultural factors influencing mental health and illness and for the incorporation of the CFI in Mexican clinical settings.

This paper provides approximate estimates for the irradiation parameter D10 to globally predict the effectiveness of any irradiation process. D10 is often reported to depend on many specific factors, implying that D10 cannot be estimated without exact knowledge of all factors involved. For specific questions these data can of course be useful but only if the conditions reported exactly match the specific question. Alternatively, this study determined the most relevant factors influencing D10, by quantitatively analyzing data from many references. The best first step appeared to be a classification of the data into vegetative bacteria and spores. As expected, spores were found to have significantly higher D10 values (average 2.48 kGy) than vegetative bacteria (average 0.762 kGy). Further analyses of the vegetative bacteria confirmed the expected extreme irradiation resistance of nonpathogenic Deinococcus radiodurans (average 10.4 kGy). Furthermore the analysis identified Enterococcus faecium, Alcaligenes spp., and several members of the Moraxella–Acinetobacter group as having very high resistance at very low temperatures (average 3.65 kGy). After exclusion of high- and low-resistance spores and some specific conditions showing relevant high or low D10 values, the average for spores was estimated to be 2.11 kGy. For vegetative bacteria this average was estimated to be 0.420 kGy. These approximate estimates are not definite, as they depend on the data used in the analyses. It is expected that inclusion of more data will not change the estimates to a great extent. The approximate estimates are therefore useful tools in designing and evaluating irradiation processes.

Objectives:Assess the degree to which research project findings were published and explore factors that influenced publication.Methods:Questionnaire to project leaders. Classification of publications and findings. Chi-squared; univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses.Results:Forty percent of projects published in peer-reviewed journal; highly statistically significant relationships between publication in peer-reviewed journals and (1) projects in Responsive/Fellowships streams (p=.045); and (2) projects awarded >£22,713 (p=.02); influence of study findings not statistically significant.Conclusions:Funders should consider the significant number of studies that did not result in publication and the higher rate of publication in peer-reviewed journals from some programs.
