This research paper aims at investigating the importance of work–family balance (WFB) on family businesses from Andalusia (Spain) and its impact on job satisfaction and employees’ commitment. The research objectives are twofold: (1) to classify companies based on the level of WFB implementation; (2) to investigate the differences between groups of companies in relation to job satisfaction, commitment, firm size and generation. In order to achieve these objectives an empirical study was conducted with a sample of 219 family businesses. The data collected using self-completion questionnaires were analyzed using cluster analysis and Manova. Main findings show a diffusion of WFB and broad implementation in this context. Thus, WFB has a positive impact on job satisfaction and on employees’ commitment. These findings contribute to the literature and practice highlighting the role of managers in the implementation of WFB and its subsequent positive return related to its impact on employees and society.

The study assessed the role of factors, affordability and work family balance, in shaping favorable attitude of women Facebook e-entrepreneurs towards online businesses in Pakistan after controlling for socio-demographic, household, and business characteristics. Data from a nonrandom sample of 112 women e-entrepreneurs operating their online businesses through Facebook was analyzed. The independent variables were affordability and work life balance and the dependent variable was favorable attitude towards online businesses. Data was analyzed using SPSS. Factor analysis and reliability analysis was done to assess validity and reliability of the scales used in the study. Hierarchical multiple regression was carried out to assess the effect of independent variables on dependent variable. The study found that affordability/low startup cost of business and work life balance were statistically significant determinants of favorable attitude towards online businesses. All control variables added in the model were statistically insignificant. The study recommends that interventions such as providing e-entrepreneurship trainings to vulnerable segments of women population can increase their empowerment. The study also suggests that action based studies should be carried out to assess the effect of e-entrepreneurship on women empowerment.

Several studies have emphasised the effects of perceived social approval in employees’ professional environment (colleagues and managers) on the implementation of remote and mediatised work practices and, more specifically, on their spatial, temporal and material characteristics. The use of information and communication technologies has been identified in the literature not only as affecting the levels felt by employees in terms of their relation to work (organisational commitment and recognition for work accomplished) but also in terms of work-life balance and health (stress and addictions). However, these studies are few in number when it comes to nomadic and informal work practices and rarely address perceived social approval in employees’ professional entourage. We used an empirical study based on a questionnaire survey. The results indicate that employees favour smartphone and laptop use. The effects of perceived social approval in their professional entourage differ according to the technologies used. These uses also have an impact on commitment and recognition, but their effects on employees’ perception of the effects of work life on “non-work” life and on addiction-related behaviours are more nuanced. These findings lead us to discuss the “right to disconnect” and the development of support and supervision schemes for nomadic, informal and mediatised work practices.

This paper analyses the relationship between a group of different practices of work-family balance and the employees’ job satisfaction, as well as the relationship between job satisfaction and employee’s organizational commitment. We differentiate this relationship according to the level of work-family (W-F) enrichment and family-work (F-W) enrichment, as well as we analyze the role of work-family (W-F) and family-work (F-W) conflict. We use a sample of 322 employees, and test the relationships with structural equations. The results show that a higher use of work-family practices has more beneficial effects on enrichment and conflict, and that both enrichment and conflict influence employees’ job satisfaction. However, higher levels of interference or stress at work make employees feel less satisfied at work. The paper highlights the positive role of enrichment in order to improve employee’s job satisfaction as well as to increase his/her organizational commitment. Keywords: work-family balance practices, conflict, enrichment, job satisfaction, organizational commitment.

Abstract Background and Purpose: Our research examines the impact of work-life balance on work engagement, both direct impact as well as through job and life satisfaction. The main aim of our research is to empirically test relations between work-life balance, job satisfaction, life satisfaction, and work engagement among higher education lecturers from Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Serbia, and Slovenia. Methods: Using validated questionnaires, we collected data on work-life balance, job satisfaction, life satisfaction and their work engagement. The quantitative data for our analysis were collected through a survey of 164 online participants. Based on an extensive literature review, we have formulated five hypotheses, which we tested in one structural model by using structural equation modelling (SEM). Results: Our findings show that an increase in work-life balance positively relates to life and work satisfaction and that life satisfaction leads to an increase in work engagement. Conclusion: The knowledge of important impact of work-life balance, together with the understanding of the relations between the researched constructs of work-life balance, life satisfaction, job satisfaction and work engagement, can strengthen teachers’ work engagement by respecting employees as actors in other roles and supporting work-family balance in the form of family-friendly policies and practices, and thereby contributes to the area of employee’s behaviour and improves the teacher’s productivity.

This chapter explores the current state of policies and practices in India that aim to promote a good work–family balance, as well as the obstacles to their realisation. Overall, it can be said that the family, co-workers, supervisors, and organisations can play a major role in improving the work–life balance of their employees. Currently, it is a concern that work-life balance issues do not appear to be high on the agenda for many Indian organisations. However, there are some encouraging signs that some companies, such as Marriot Hotels, are taking the lead to implement positive work–life balance policies. Yet the research in this field in India is still in its infancy so it will take time to properly assess the impact that these developments might have.

The influence of schedule flexibility, including flextime, on work-family balance and job outcomes has been of great interest to both members of academia and practitioners. However, the role that the desirability of flextime has on such constructs has been largely ignored in past literature. Additionally, relatively few studies have investigated differences between work-family balance and job satisfaction among those who are actively using flextime and those who are not currently using flextime. Results of this study strengthen the need for an increased understanding of the role that flextime appeal serves in work-family balance and job satisfaction, and the impact that flextime has on enhancing these important work-related constructs. Other meaningful differences between flextime users and non-flextime users, including the roles of gender and the presence of children living at home are also explored.
