BiFeO3 is considered as a single phase multiferroic. However, its magnetism is very weak. We study the magnetic properties of BiFeO3 by Cu and (Cu, Zn). Polycrystalline samples Bi(Fe0.95Cu0.05)O3 and BiFe0.95(Zn0.025Cu0.025)O3 are prepared by the sol-gel method. The magnetic properties of BiFe0.95(Zn0.025Cu0.025)O3 are greater than that of BiFeO3 and Bi(Fe0.95Cu0.05)O3. The analyses of X-ray absorption fine structure data show that the doped Cu atoms well occupy the sites of the Fe atoms. X-ray absorption near edge spectra data confirm that the valence state of Fe ions does not change. Cu and Zn metal ion co-doping has no impact on the local structure of the Fe and Bi atoms. The modification of magnetism by doping Zn can be understood by the view of the occupation site of non-magnetically active Zn2+.

Pure TiO2, Eu3+and Sm3+co-doping TiO2composite nanoparticles have been prepared by sol-gel method and characterized by the techniques such as XRD, SEM and DRS. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution was used as a probe reaction to evaluate their photocatalytic activity. The matrix distortion of TiO2nano-particles increases after co-doping of Eu3+and Sm3+and a blue-shift of the absorption profile are clearly observed. The results show that co-doping of Eu3+and Sm3+inhibits the phase transformation of TiO2from anatase to rutile, decreases the diameter of TiO2nano-particles and significantly enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO2. The Eu3+and Sm3+co-doped into TiO2nano-particles exert a synergistic effect on their photocatalytic activity.

Highly crystalline titania nano-particles were synthesized by hydrothermal method using novel stable water-soluble titanium complexes. It was confirmed that single phase anatase, rutile and brookite, which can be rarely synthesized as a single phase, can be obtained by varying the ligand in the complex and pH of the aqueous solution. TEM observations and BET specific surface area measurements had shown that these samples consisted of nanosized particles of 5~200 nm and had high specific surface areas of 25~150 m2/g. According to UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra, these titania samples absorbed light in the visible region (λ > 400 nm). Photocatalytic activities in NO oxidation reaction exhibited by synthesized titania powders under the irradiation by UV- visible light were higher than the activity of the commercial TiO2 photocatalyst P25 (Degussa). Especially, under illumination by only visible light of above 510 nm wavelength, photocatalytic activity of the obtained specimens exceeded that of P25 more than four times. We also clearly demonstrated that single phase brookite had high photocatalytic activity for NO oxidation.
