This chapter has two main aims. First, to investigate the Facebook practices used in the U.S. banking sector with the aim of enhancing customer engagement; second, to perform a comparative analysis of the use of Facebook in this respect, among different U.S. banks. In this comparative analysis, we apply the Federal Reserve charter classification (Nationally chartered member bank, State-chartered member bank and State-chartered nonmember bank). The findings of this study contribute significantly to our understanding of the influence of social media in enhancing customer engagement. Banks, and their community managers in particular, can make use of the conclusions drawn in this study to develop future strategies to foster citizen engagement via Facebook.

AbstractWe investigate whether and how government interventions in the U.S. banking sector influence the stock market performance of corporate borrowers during the financial crisis of 2007–2009. We measure firms’ exposures to government interventions with an intervention score that is based on combined information on the firms’ structure of bank relationships and their banks’ participation in government capital support programs. We find that government capital infusions in banks have a significantly positive impact on borrowing firms’ stock returns. The effect is more pronounced for riskier and bank-dependent firms and for those that borrow from banks that are less capitalized and smaller.

Paper ini berupaya menganalisa implikasi perilaku bank dalam menentukan portofolio terhadap tingkat efektivitas kebijakan moneter. Dengan kerangka analisa comparative static, paper ini mengetengahkan model industri perbankan yang bersifat monopolis dimana pemilik bank memaksimalkan profit dengan kendala tertentu baik yang berasal dari kesanggupan modal maupun kendala akibat regulasi.Kalibrasi model pada kondisi optimal, mengindikasikan bahwa penurunan fungsi disintermediasi bank yang didominasi oleh faktor asymmetric information, akan berakibat pada menurunnya efektifitas kebijakan moneter.Kesimpulan ini berimplikasi pada (i) perlunya Biro Kredit dan rating agencies untuk menyempurnakan informasi, (ii) perlunya investasi yang lebih besar oleh perbankan atas kapasitas riset dan sistem monitoring, (iii) perlunya mempertimbangkan skema garansi kredit, (iv) perlunya koordinasi yang lebih baik antara kebijakan mikro dan makro demi kestabilan makro yang akan meningkatkan keyakinan publik dan terakhir, (v) perlunya mempromosikan perkembangan lembaga keuangan non-bank, untuk mengurangi ketergantungan pembiayaan atas lembaga perbankan.JEL: E52, E58, G21Keyword: Disintermediation, monetary policy, banking sector, interest rate.

The financial crisis in the USA has led to major changes in the banking sector architecture. Many financial institutions went bankrupt and were absorbed by competitors, while others were compelled to change their business models. That has resulted in consolidation of the banking sector. Significant developments were also imposed by B. Obama’s financial regulation reform and unprecedented interference of the federal government in banking business.

One in eight people in the U.S. experience food insecurity (FI). To date, the food banking sector has been at the forefront of efforts to address FI, but the healthcare sector is becoming increasingly involved in such efforts. The extent of collaboration between the two sectors remains unclear. We explored food banking stakeholders’ views on the current state of partnerships between the two sectors. We used purposive sampling to recruit ten key informants for semi-structured interviews. We also conducted a national online survey to gather data from food bank directors (n = 137). Thematic analysis generated two major themes: (1) Healthcare and food banking stakeholders are coordinating to achieve collective impact, and (2) Food banking-healthcare partnerships are leveraging various resources and vested interests within the medical community. We found evidence of ongoing partnerships between the two sectors and opportunities to strengthen these partnerships through the support of backbone organizations.
