The corundum-mullite was toughened by in-situ synthesized mullite whiskers and the process parameters influencing the fracture toughness of corundum-mullite, such as sintering temperature, addition amount of AlF3 and V2O5, were optimized by means of response surface method. Corundum-mullite with fracture toughness of 9.44 MPa.m-1/2 could be obtained under the optimized conditions, i.e. sintering temperature of 1400°C, 4.8 wt.% of AlF3 and 5.8 wt.% of V2O5. The results showed that it was feasible to prepare corundum-mullite toughened by in-situ synthesized mullite whiskers by the optimized parameters. In addition, an accurate model based on response surface method was proposed to predict the experimental results.

In this paper, an in-situ measurement of crack size as a function of applied indentation load during indentation test was conducted. To perform the in-situ measurement, an instrumented indentation test machine with the in-situ observation system was developed and used. The joints of transparent ceramics by diffusion bonding were prepared as the specimen used in this study. The indentations were performed at the interface of the joints, and in the monolithic transparent ceramics by means of the instrumented indenter with the in-situ observation system. The relationship between crack shape and indentation load, as well as, the effect of the indenter shape on it were discussed.

Prepared silicon carbide(SiC) ceramic foams combined with mullite whiskers which synthesized by in-situ reaction. Studied on the influence of temperature on the synthesis of mullite whisker, and the influence of mullite content on the compressive strength, thermal shock resistance of SiC ceramic foams. The results indicate that the performance of mullite whiskers synthesized at 1400°Cwere best, when mullite content was 25%, SiC ceramic foams could reach the maximum compressive strength for 1.75MP, the most thermal shock resistance for14 times.

In-situ growth of mullite whisker from waste coal gangue and different aluminium source mixtures by dry pressing were investigated aiming at the preparation of mullite - corundum lightweight refractory by controlling mullite whisker precursor pseudo particle size and quantity in corundum matrix. The phase composition and microstructure were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques. Apparent porosity and bending strength were also measured. The samples exhibited characteristic alumina and mullite phases. The formation mechanism and influence factors for mullite whiskers materials were discussed. The experimental results showed that the whisker of the obtained sample changed from the accumulated short column to mesh cross acicular whisker shape, and the length to diameter ratio increases. When the aluminium source was aluminium hydroxide, the length to diameter ratio and apparent porosity reached the maximum of 17.6 and the minimum of 2.15%. The bending strength of all the samples was similar, that of the sample prepared by calcined bauxite was the largest (84 MPa), that of the sample prepared by calcined alumina was inferior, and the sample prepared by aluminum hydroxide was the lowest.
