Toxic and heavy metals are considered harmful derivatives of industrial activities; they are not biodegradable and their accumulation in living organisms can become lethal. Among other heavy and toxic metals, chromium is considered hazardous, especially in the hexavalent (Cr6+) form. Numerous established studies show that exposure to Cr6+ via drinking water leads to elevated chromium levels in tissues, which may result in various forms of cancer. The purpose of this research is to synthesize magnetite/zeolite-X composite particles for the adsorption and magnetic removal of Cr6+ ions from aqueous solutions. Synthesis and characterization of such composite nanomaterials, along with an initial experimental evaluation of Cr6+ removal from water-based solution, are presented. Results show that zeolite-X is a very promising zeolite form, that when bound to magnetic nanoparticles can be used to trap and magnetically remove toxic ions from aqueous solutions.

'Waste' FeIII/CrIII hydroxide, generated from the treatment of CrVI in fertiliser industry effluent, was used as an adsorbent for the removal of toxic ions such as AsIII, HgII, CrIII and PO43–, and dyes such as Rhodamine-B and Procion Orange M2R, from aqueous solutions. The removal was efficient except for Procion Orange.

The sorption capability of raw and thermally treated dolomite samples with respect to toxic ions was estimated through the adsorption of chromium(VI) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption isotherms were shown to fit the well-known Freundlich equation. The results confirm the weak adsorption of chromium(VI) on raw dolomite relative to the other dolomite-derived sorbents. The influence of ionic strength on the adsorption was also determined.

Wool graft polyacrylamidoxime (W-g-PAO) was synthesized using coarse wool as the raw keratin material. The W-g-PAO can be used as the cheap and excellent adsorbent for the removal of both cationic and anionic toxic ions from waste water. The approach can be extended to the modification of other waste raw keratin materials and used them as the blocks for the fabrication of functional materials.
