Electronic patient education and communications, such as email, text messaging, and social media, are on the rise in healthcare today. This article explores potential uses of technology to seek solutions in healthcare for such challenges as modifying behaviors related to chronic conditions, improving efficiency, and decreasing costs. A brief discussion highlights the role of technologies in healthcare informatics and considers two theoretical bases for technology implementation. Discussion focuses more extensively on the ability and advantages of electronic communication technology, such as e-mail, social media, text messaging, and electronic health records, to enhance patient-provider e-communications in nursing today. Effectiveness of e-communication in healthcare is explored, including recent and emerging applications designed to improve patient–provider connections and review of current evidence supporting positive outcomes. The conclusion addresses the vision of nurses’ place in the vanguard of these developments.

Assessing the implementation of nutrition interventions is important to identify characteristics and dietary patterns of individuals who benefit most. The aim was to report on young adults’ experiences of receiving dietary feedback text messaging intervention. Diet was captured using an image-based 4-day mobile food recordTM application (mFRTM) and assessed to formulate two tailored feedback text messages on fruit and vegetables and energy-dense nutrient-poor (EDNP) foods and beverages. At 6-months 143 participants completed a second mFRTM and a questionnaire evaluating the dietary feedback. Participants who agreed the text messages made them think about how much vegetables they ate were more likely to increase their intake by at least half a serve than those who disagreed [odds ratio (OR) = 4.28, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.76 to 10.39]. Those who agreed the text messages made them think about how much EDNP foods they ate, were twice as likely to decrease their intake by over half a serve (OR = 2.39, 95%CI: 1.12 to 5.25) than those who disagreed. Undertaking detailed dietary assessment ensured the tailored feedback was constructive and relevant. Personal contemplation about vegetable and EDNP food intake appears to be a mediator of dietary change in young adults.

Abstract In our work, we look to classify images that make their way into our smartphone devices through various social-media text-messaging platforms. We aim at classifying images into three broad categories: document-based images, quote-based images, and photographs. People, especially students, share many document-based images that include snapshots of essential emails, handwritten notes, articles, etc. Quote based images, consisting of birthday wishes, motivational messages, festival greetings, etc., are among the highly shared images on social media platforms. A significant share of images constitutes photographs of people, including group photographs, selfies, portraits, etc. We train various convolutional neural network (CNN) based models on our self-made dataset and compare their results to find our task’s optimum model.

BACKGROUND Calcium is an important nutrient for the attainment of peak bone mass during adolescence and young adulthood. However, these life phases are characterized as hard to reach for health promotion. Social media platforms offer a promising channel as they are relatively low cost but used ubiquitously by youth. OBJECTIVE The aim of the CAlcium Nutrition-Dietary Opportunities (CAN-DO) study was to conduct a randomized controlled trial to test the effectiveness of Facebook alone or with text messaging as channels to deliver a theory-based program to encourage optimal calcium intake. METHODS The intervention was a 3-arm parallel trial. Young adults aged 18 to 25 years were recruited through university and social media for a 6-week trial. Participants were randomized to 1 of the 3 arms (ie, Facebook posts, Facebook posts plus text messages, and control group that received an electronic leaflet containing information on calcium intake). The primary outcome was change in intake of milk and other calcium-rich foods, and secondary outcomes were knowledge, self-efficacy, motivation, and habit formation concerning calcium-rich foods. Changes were assessed before and after the intervention, and the differences in change between groups were compared using multivariate regression models with multiple imputations for missing data. RESULTS A total of 211 participants (64/211, 30.3% males) participated (mean age 21.4 years, SD 2.1) in this study. At the end of the program, no increase in milk intake (odds ratio [OR] 1.51, 95% CI 0.61-3.75 Facebook; OR 1.77, 95% CI 0.74-4.24 Facebook plus text messages; <i>P</i>=.41) nor calcium-rich food was detected (<i>P</i>=.57). There was a significant improvement in knowledge in the Facebook plus text messages group (<i>P</i>&lt;.001), but habit formation improved less than that in the other 2 groups (<i>P</i>=.01). Our results showed a moderate level of engagement with intervention content and positive qualitative feedback from participants. CONCLUSIONS The CAN-DO study delivered via Facebook (with the additional support of text messages) was found to improve knowledge and was acceptable among young adults. However, further research is needed to better understand social media engagement and how to optimize the program for participants to be sufficiently motivated to increase their intake of calcium-rich foods. Background: Substance-impaired driving continues to be a national public health concern and data suggests that up to one-third of college students report driving after drinking and/or cannabis use in the past year. To date, little research has investigated whether brief, technology-based interventions can be used to reduce substance-impaired driving among young adults. Recent research indicates that interventions that incorporate personal contact lead to larger effect sizes than fully automated interventions. The present study compared an interactive text-messaging intervention to an automated text-messaging intervention in the context of a brief, mobile-phone based substance-impaired driving intervention. Method: Participants were recruited through the university’s subject pool (n = 46) and completed measures that assessed impaired driving at baseline and three-month follow-up. In order to be eligible, students had to be at least 18 years or older, have access to a motor vehicle, and report driving after drinking two or more drinks and/or driving after cannabis use at least three times in the past three months. Participants were randomly assigned into four conditions: personalized feedback plus text-messaging (n = 12), personalized feedback plus automated text messaging (n = 11), an active control condition- (substance use information, n = 12), and an assessment only control condition (n = 11). Results: Repeated measures ANOVAs were run to compare the number of times driving while impaired over time across conditions. Analyses revealed the personalized feedback plus text-messaging led to significantly greater reductions over time in the number of times driving while impaired compared to participants in the assessment-only condition (p = .022). Additionally, participants in the personalized feedback plus text-messaging condition reported a greater reduction over time in the number of times driving while impaired than those in the personalized feedback plus automated text messaging condition, though this difference was not significantly significant (p = .066). Surprisingly, the text-messaging conditions did not result in significantly greater reductions in substance-impaired driving compared to the active control condition (p = .227). Discussion: Overall, these findings provide preliminary support for the short-term efficacy of a mobile-delivered personalized feedback intervention with interactive text-messaging in reducing substance-impaired driving among young adults. Due to Covid-19, three-month follow-up data could not be collected from half of the originally enrolled sample, resulting in underpowered analyses. Additional data will be collected as part of this pilot trial in the coming year.
