The objective of this research work was to determine the effect of fiber cocktail on mechanical properties of concrete. Three types of fibers were used namely monofilament polypropylene fiber, steel fiber and glass fiber. Steel and glass fiber were incorporated in concrete at different dosages while the content of Polypropylene fiber was kept constant. For this purpose, cubes (150×150×150mm) and prisms (101×101×508mm) were casted for compressive strength test on cubes and Two-Point load test on prisms. Eighteen different mixes were prepared such as control mix, single fiber concrete, double hybrid concrete and triple hybrid concrete. It was observed that both compressive and flexural strength increased with addition of single, double and triple fibers. However, the strengths of triple hybrid concrete were observed to be lesser as compared to single and double hybrid concrete.

The improvement of the load carrying capacity of concrete columns under a triaxial compressive stress results from the strain restriction. Under a triaxial stress state, the capacity of the deformation of concrete is greatly decreased with the increase of the side compression. Therefore, confining the deformation in the lateral orientation is an effective way to improve the strength and ductility of concrete columns. This paper carried out an experimental investigation on axially loaded normal strength concrete columns confined by 10 different types of materials, including steel tube, glass fiber confined steel tube (GFRP), PVC tube, carbon fiber confined PVC tube (CFRP), glass fiber confined PVC tube (GFRP), CFRP, GFRP, polyethylene (PE), PE hybrid CFRP and PE hybrid GFRP. The deformation, macroscopical deformation characters, failure mechanism and failure modes are studied in this paper. The ultimate bearing capacity of these 10 types of confined concrete columns and the influences of the confining materials on the ultimate bearing capacity are obtained. The advantages and disadvantages of these 10 types of confining methods are compared.

The results of an experimental program on eight short reinforced concrete columns having different structural sizes and axial compression ratios subjected to monotonic/cyclic lateral loading were reported. A 3D mesoscopic simulation method for the analysis of mechanical properties of reinforced concrete members was established, and then it was utilized as an important supplement and extension of the traditional experimental method. Lots of numerical trials, based on the restricted experimental results and the proposed 3D mesoscopic simulation method, were carried out to sufficiently evaluate the seismic performances of short reinforced concrete columns with different structural sizes and axial compression ratios. The test results indicate that (1) the failure pattern of reinforced concrete columns can be significantly affected by the shear-span ratio; (2) increasing the axial compression ratio could improve the load capacity of the reinforced concrete column, but the deformation capacity would be restricted and the failure mode would be more brittle, consequently the energy dissipation capacity could be deteriorated; and (3) the load capacity, the displacement ductility, and the energy dissipation capacity of the short reinforced concrete columns all exhibit clear size effect, namely, the size effect could significantly affect the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete columns.
