The container sector has been growing fast since its dawn, and it has almost reached a climax in terms of handling mega containerships at existing ports. In that respect the offshore port system presented here can offer operational advantages. Furthermore, it can bring improvements to the utilisation of ultra large containerships and the enhanced energy efficiency they introduce. In this framework, this paper presents a cost analysis of the possible offshore port systems including their investment cost. This research is based on data from relevant projects and studies coupled with a number of assumptions to be presented. The results suggest that the offshore container port system can play a remarkable role to reduce energy consumption in the container shipping.

Sinemurian phosphorites in southeastern British Columbia and southwestern Alberta conform with the "West Coast type" phosphorite depositional model. The model indicates that they were deposited on or near the Early Jurassic western cratonic margin, next to a sea or trough from which cold water upwelled. This suggests that the allochthonous terrane Quesnellia lay well offshore in Sinemurian time. The sea separating Quesnellia from North America was partly floored by oceanic crust ("Eastern Terrane") and partly by a thick sequence of rifted, continental terrace wedge rocks comprising the Purcell Supergroup and overlying Paleozoic sequence. This sequence must have been depressed sufficiently that access of upwelling deep currents to the phosphorite depositional area was not impeded.

Different types of intelligent rollover system deployed by road agencies across North America are investigated. The importance of weight is addressed for maximum effectiveness of rollover warning messages for commercial vehicles in a potential rollover situation on sharp curves or exit ramps. The type of information that may be used to activate a rollover is discussed to analyze the number of correctly warned vehicles compared with the number of false warnings generated by the rollover warning system. A case study of the effectiveness of an intelligent rollover system is presented. On the basis of this case study, it was found that speed-based rollover warning systems generated anywhere from 44 percent to 49 percent more false rollover warnings for commercial vehicles than did rollover warning systems that employed weight information in the rollover decision criteria.

Taxonomic characterization of pterotracheoid gastropods, morphological characteristics and occurrence in California Current waters are reviewed. Single species of atlantid (Atlanta californiensis) and carinariid (Carinaria japonica) from these waters are described and illustrated.
