: Diabetes and breast cancer are pathophysiologically similar and clinically established diseases that co-exist with a wider complex similar molecular signalling and having similar set of risk factors. Insulin plays a pivotal role for invasion and migration of breast cancer cells. Several ethnopharmacological evidences light the concomitant anti-diabetic and anti-cancer activity of medicinal plant and phytochemicals against breast tumor of patients with diabetes. This present article reviewed the findings on medicinal plants and phytochemicals with concomitant anti-diabetic and anti-cancer effects reported in scientific literature to facilitate the development of dual-acting therapies against diabetes and breast cancer. The schematic tabular form of published literatures on medicinal plants (63 plants belongs to 45 families) concluded the dynamics of phytochemicals against diabetes and breast tumor that could be explored further for the discovery of therapies for controlling of breast cancer cell invasion and migration in patient with diabetes.

Abstract Cancer is a disease resulting in unbridled growth of cells due to dysregulation in the balance of cell populations. Various management procedures in handling cases of cancer are not without their adverse side effects on the normal cells. Medicinal plants/herbs have been in use in the management of various ailments, including cancer, for a long time. Medicinal plants have been credited with wide safety margins, cost effectiveness, availability and diverse activities. This study reviewed various mechanisms of anti-cancer activities of some medicinal plants from a biochemical perspective. The mechanisms of anti-cancer activities of plant compounds addressed in this article include induction of apoptosis, anti-angiogenic effects, anti-metastasis, inhibition of cell cycle, inhibition of DNA destruction and effects on key enzymes, cytotoxic and anti-oxidant effects. The anti-cancer activities of some of the plants involve more than one mechanism.

Medicinal plants serve as a lead source of bioactive compounds and have been an integral part of day-to-day life in treating various disease conditions since ancient times. Withaferin A (WFA), a bioactive ingredient of Withania somnifera, has been used for health and medicinal purposes for its adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties long before the published literature came into existence. Nearly 25% of pharmaceutical drugs are derived from medicinal plants, classified as dietary supplements. The bioactive compounds in these supplements may serve as chemotherapeutic substances competent to inhibit or reverse the process of carcinogenesis. The role of WFA is appreciated to polarize tumor-suppressive Th1-type immune response inducing natural killer cell activity and may provide an opportunity to manipulate the tumor microenvironment at an early stage to inhibit tumor progression. This article signifies the cumulative information about the role of WFA in modulating antitumor immunity and its potential in targeting prostate cancer.

Naturally shed deciduous teeth are potentially useful as a biomarker of environmental exposure. To assess the prenatal environment of child, we tried to present the neonatal line on the elemental maps and investigate the trace elements in pre- and post-natally formed tooth enamel using micro-PIXE. Generally, the neonatal line is observed more clearly in the tooth from child who has some difficulties at birth. In this study, five deciduous teeth from five children with developmental disorders were used for analysis. Seven trace elements ( Na , Mg , Si , Cl , Fe , Zn , and Sr ) were detected in enamel of all five teeth. The line, it was thought neonatal line, was observed on the elemental map of Ca and P in the tooth from the child with serious birth complications. In order to compare the elemental concentration between pre- and post-natal enamel, concentration variation of elements were projected along the line perpendicular to the neonatal line. Lower Ca concentration in prenatal enamel was observed. By tracing the location of neonatal line on the other elemental maps, the concentrations of detected trace elements were compared in the same way. The differences of concentration of these trace elements between pre- and post-natal enamel were not clear because of much statistic variation. We could determine the trace elemental profiles and concentrations around the neonatal line in the enamel from the child with serious birth complications.
