In this study essential oil from both conventional and micropropagated flowers of Hedychium coronarium were extracted through hydro-distillation process and its chemical composition were analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. A total of 11 compounds were identified from conventionally grown plants where as 7 compounds were identified in micropropagated plants. The major compound identified in conventional and micropropagated plantlets is eucalyptol (18.04 % and 26.47 %) respectively. The medicinally beneficial compounds present in the oil confirm the plant to be curative for various diseases in human and valuable for commercial purposes.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is an epidemic vector of several diseases such as dengue fever and yellow fever. Several pesticides are used to control the mosquito population. Because of their frequent use, some mosquitoes have developed resistance. In the present study, we evaluated the synergistic mosquito-repellent activity of essential oils from Pelargonium radula, Syzgium aromaticum and Citrus aurantifolia against Aedes aegypti by using Y-tube olfactometer. The oils was subsequently analyzed by using GC–MS. These results clearly reveal that the essential oil of C. aurantifolia served as the most potent repellent agent against Aedes aegypti . The results indicate that three constituents; limonene (19.58%) followed by β–pinene (17.12%), geraniol (13.23%) which comprise a large proportion of the C. aurantifolia are likely responsible for the observed repellent activity.

The essential oil of Citrus aurantifolia (Christm) Swingle fruits (limes) was studied for its potential spasmolytic effects in relation to its chemical composition. The essential oil, extracted by hydrodistillation (HD), was analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. The antispasmodic activity was evaluated on isolated rabbit jejunum, aorta and uterus. The results indicated that the essential oil of C aurantifolia possesses important spasmolytic properties, which are likely to be due to its major constituents, limonene (58.4%), β-pinene (15.4%), γ-terpinene (8.5%), and citral (4.4%).

The chemical composition of clove leaf essential oil obtained from steam distillation process Essential oils are needed in various industries such as industrial perfumes, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food industry, and beverages. This study aims to determine the chemical composition of clove leaf essential oil from steam distillation process using GCMS. Dry clove leaves weighing 1.5 kg are included in the kettle flute and sealed properly. Steam from the boiler flows into the kettle with the pressure of 0.5 barG, 1 barG and 1.5 barG for 5, 6 and 7 hours. Mixture oil and water out of the condenser are accommodated and let stand for 24 hours to separate water and oil. Clove leaf oil was purified with 10% bentonite by weight of oil at a temperature of 50oC with stirring for 1 hour. Clove leaf oil that has separated from bentonite added anhydrous Na2SO4 and let stand for 15 minutes and then separate the water and Na2SO4 in oil. Samples with % yield of the largest in its chemical composition analysis using GCMS. Based on the results obtained the largest yield is 1.84% with content of eugenol is 65.03% and 20.94% trans-caryophyllene. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui komposisi kimia minyak atsiri daun cengkeh dari proses penyulingan uap menggunakan analisa GCMS. Daun cengkeh kering seberat 1,5 kg yang sudah bersih dari kotoran dimasukkan dalam ketel suling dan ditutup dengan rapat. Steam dari boiler dialirkan ke ketel suling dengan tekanan 0,5 barG, 1 barG dan 1,5 barG selama 5, 6 dan 7 jam. Campuran minyak dan air yang keluar dari kondenser ditampung dan diamkan selama 24 jam untuk memisahkan air dan minyak. Minyak daun cengkeh dimurnikan dengan bentonit 10% dari berat minyak pada suhu 50oC sambil diaduk selama 1 jam. Minyak daun cengkeh yang telah terpisah dari bentonit ditambahkan Na2SO4 anhidrat dan diamkan selama 15 menit kemudian pisahkan air dan Na2SO4 dalam minyak. Sampel dengan % rendemen terbesar di analisa komposisi kimianya menggunakan GCMS. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian didapat rendemen terbesar adalah 1,84% dengan kadar yaitu eugenol 65,03% dan trans-caryophyllene 20.94%.Kata kunci : Daun cengkeh, Eugenol, Minyak atsiri, Penyulingan uap

Chemical compounds from essential oils have been receiving a great deal of public attention owing to a myriad of functions, including their role as a substitute for artificial preservatives. This study reports the physico-chemical characteristics and the antibacterial activities of the essential oil isolated from the leaves of lemon (Citrus aurantifolia L.) grown in Tien Giang Province, Vietnam. The essential oils were obtained by microwave assisted hydro-distillation and their chemical composition was investigated by GC-MS. The result revealed that the oil is extremely rich in α-citral, reaching the content of 27.982 %, followed by β-citronellol and D-limonene at 20.06 and 15.732 %, respectively. Besides, antibacterial activities of extracted essential oil against 4 bacterial cultures i.e., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus was examined, highlighting strong antibacterial properties of citral in the oil.
