The carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/cement composites with different doping levels of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and water/cement ratios are fabricated. By comparing the responses of electrical resistance of these CNTs/cement composites to compressive stress, the effects of MWNT doping level and water/cement ratio on the piezoresistive sensitivity of composites are investigated. Experimental results indicate that the piezoresistive sensitivities of CNTs/cement composites with 0.05 wt. %, 0.1 wt. % and 1 wt. % of MWNTs firstly increase and then decrease with the increase of CNT doping levels. The electrical resistance of CNTs/cement composites 0.6 water/cement ratio is more sensitive to compressive stress than that of composites with 0.45 water/cement ratio.

The compressive strength and piezoresistive property of cement mortar with low adding level of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were investigated. Experimental results showed that the compressive strength of the MWCNTs/cement mortars increased with the adding amount of MWCNTs content for all the curing ages. Silica fume promoted the compressive strength development by well bonding with MWCNTs and filling effect. The electrical resistance changed synchronously with the compressive strength and the amount of the changes varied with the stress and MWCNTs addition levels. Higher MWCNTs doping level improved the piezoresistive sensitivity of the mortar. The mortar with silica fume (5-10% by weight of cement) exhibited better piezoresistive response than that without silica fume at the same MWCNTs doping levels.

Two types of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), powder and liquid, were added to cementitious composites to build self-sensing concrete. To properly evaluate and quantify the effect of MWCNTs on electrical resistance, various tests, including isothermal conduction calorimetry, were carried out. One of primary issues of self-monitoring concrete is dispersion, so ultrasonication was used to properly mix the CNTs in the dispersion solution, and silica fume was employed to make the specimens. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and porosity analyses were performed to investigate the physical properties of the composites and to confirm uniform dispersion. The distance of the electrical resistance was also measured, and the dosages and types of MWCNTs were analyzed.

The functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in He:O plasma is investigated. It's shown that plasma treatment leads to the removal of defective outer graphene layers and their fragments due to oxidation. It is established that the surface of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes contains numerous uncoordinated carbon atoms and oxygen-containing functional groups. The preservation of the structure of the internal graphene layers of nanotubes and the formation of broken chemical bonds ensures a decrease in electrical resistance. At the same time, there is a narrowing of the distribution of electrical resistance values of nanotube ensembles.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are promising materials for chemical gas sensing because of their high electrical and mechanical properties and significant sensitivity to changes in the local environment. However, high-content MWCNT films suffer from the low tunability of the electrical resistance, which is crucial for high chemoresistive sensing performance. This study reports the conjugation of MWCNTs and oligomers of polyaniline (PANI) doped with Ag+ or Cu2+ incorporated into a PVC/polyacrylate. MWCNTs were sonicated in n-methyl pyrrolidine (NMP), and PANI was conjugated via a 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide and an N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) process. MWCNT/PANI Ag+ or Cu2+ conjugates were doped to form a coordinate bond. The doped conjugates were successfully incorporated into the PVC/polyacrylate. These MWCNT/PANI conjugates doped were exposed to different concentrations of ethylene gas to examine their feasibility for ethylene detection.

AbstractCarbon nanotubes (CNT) are interesting candidates for the reinforcement in robust composites and for conducting fillers in polymers due to their fascinating electronic and mechanical properties. For the first time, we report the incorporation of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) into silica-glass surfaces by means of partial surface-melting caused by a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser. MWNTs were detected being well incorporated in the silica-surface. The composites are characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman-spectroscopy. A model for the composite-formation is proposed based on heatabsorption by MWNTs and a partial melting of the silica-surface.
