The microstructures and mechanical properties of Mg-Zn-Zr-Y alloy extruded bar with different heat treatment processes were investigated, including solution treatments of 400 oC, 450 oC and 500 oC for 3 hours followed by 170 oC×24h aging treatment, and solely aging treatments of 160 oC, 180 oC for 24hours without solution after extruding. By comparing the grain size, strength and elongation of the samples, the heat treatment processes for extruded products with high strength and with medium strength were recommended.

A study of the features of structural-phase state, thermal stability, mechanical properties characteristics and fracture features of V-Cr-Ta-Zr alloy after chemical-heat treatment by the method of nonequilibrium internal oxidation has been carried out. It has been established that, in contrast to chemical-heat treatment in a defect state, the effect of oxygen when introduced into a material with a stabilized structure is observed only at high concentrations. At such oxygen concentrations, which ensure the maximum binding of Zr into particles based on ZrO2, the alloy under study demonstrates a high level of thermal stability and strength properties. These effects are associated with the implementation of disperse strengthening according to the Orowan mechanism by nanosized ZrO2 particles characterized by high thermal stability. The concentration and nature of the distribution of oxygen predetermine the spatial distribution of nanosized ZrO2 particles formed during chemical-heat treatment, which manifests itself in fracture features of the material at different temperatures.

The microstructure, phase composition, and mechanical properties during heat treatment and rolling of the novel Al-5.0Cu-3.2Er-0.9Mn-0.3Zr alloy were evaluated. A new quaternary (Al,Cu,Mn,Er) phase with possible composition Al25Cu4Mn2Er was found in the as-cast alloy. Al20Cu2Mn3 and Al3(Zr,Er) phases were nucleated during homogenization, and θ″(Al2Cu) precipitates were nucleated during aging. The metastable disc shaped θ″(Al2Cu) precipitates with a thickness of 5 nm and diameter of 100–200 nm were nucleated mostly on the Al3(Zr,Er) phase precipitates with a diameter of 35 nm. The hardness Vickers (HV) peak was found after the annealing of a rolled alloy at 150 °C due to strengthening by θ″(A2Cu) precipitates, which have a larger effect in materials hardness than do the softening processes. The novel Al-Cu-Er-Mn-Zr alloy has a yield strength (YS) of 320–332 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 360–370 MPa, and an El. of 3.2–4.0% in the annealed alloy after rolling condition.

The microstructures and mechanical properties of superalloy K465 under different heat treatment, including as as-cast, solution treatment and aging, were investigated. The results showed that γ' precipitates in as-cast condition exhibited two kinds of morphologies of fine regular cuboidal shape at dendritic arm and coarse irregular form in interdendritic region. MC carbides decomposed into M6C carbides partly after 1210°C/4h solution treatment. The high temperature stress-rupture life can be improved obviously with the increasing cooling rate. When cooling rate was lower than 70°C/min, the room temperature tensile elongation increased with cooling rate increasing. When cooling rate was higher than 90°C/min the room temperature tensile elongation decreased with cooling rate increasing. The proper cooling rate of 70oC/min~90oC/min is advantageous for the achievement of excellent comprehensive properties. When aging treatments continued the regularization of γ' resulted in the improvement of stress-rupture life and the reduction of tensile elongation. The mechanical property gap between the solution treatment and aging can be decreased with increasing cooling rate.
