This paper presents development of pressure sensor array with capacitance-type unit sensors, with scalable number of cells. Different assemblies of unit pressure sensors and their arrays were considered, their characteristics and fabrication methods were investigated. The structure of primary pressure transducer (PPT) array was presented; its operating principle of array was illustrated, calculated reference ratios were derived. The interface circuit, allowing to transform the changes in the primary transducer capacitance into voltage level variations, was proposed. A prototype sensor was implemented; the dependency of output signal power from the applied force was empirically obtained. In the range under 30 N it exhibited a linear pattern. The sensitivity of the array cells to the applied pressure is in the range 134.56..160.35. The measured drift of the output signals from the array cells after 10,000 loading cycles was 1.39%. For developed prototype of the pressure sensor array, based on the experimental data, the average signal-to-noise ratio over the cells was calculated, and equaled 63.47 dB. The proposed prototype was fabricated of easily available materials. It is relatively inexpensive and requires no fine-tuning of each individual cell. Capacitance-type operation type, compared to piezoresistive one, ensures greater stability of the output signal. The scalability and adjustability of cell parameters are achieved with layered sensor structure. The pressure sensor array, presented in this paper, can be utilized in various robotic systems.

Ankle injuries may adversely increase the risk of injury to the joints of the lower extremity and can lead to various impairments in workplaces. The purpose of this study was to predict the ankle angles by developing a footwear pressure sensor and utilizing a machine learning technique. The footwear sensor was composed of six FSRs (force sensing resistors), a microcontroller and a Bluetooth LE chipset in a flexible substrate. Twenty-six subjects were tested in squat and stoop motions, which are common positions utilized when lifting objects from the floor and pose distinct risks to the lifter. The kNN (k-nearest neighbor) machine learning algorithm was used to create a representative model to predict the ankle angles. For the validation, a commercial IMU (inertial measurement unit) sensor system was used. The results showed that the proposed footwear pressure sensor could predict the ankle angles at more than 93% accuracy for squat and 87% accuracy for stoop motions. This study confirmed that the proposed plantar sensor system is a promising tool for the prediction of ankle angles and thus may be used to prevent potential injuries while lifting objects in workplaces.

AbstractVarious pre-trained deep learning models for the segmentation of bioimages have been made available as ‘developer-to-end-user’ solutions. They usually require neither knowledge of machine learning nor coding skills, are optimized for ease of use, and deployability on laptops. However, testing these tools individually is tedious and success is uncertain.Here, we present the ‘Op’en ‘Se’gmentation ‘F’ramework (OpSeF), a Python framework for deep learning-based instance segmentation. OpSeF aims at facilitating the collaboration of biomedical users with experienced image analysts. It builds on the analysts’ knowledge in Python, machine learning, and workflow design to solve complex analysis tasks at any scale in a reproducible, well-documented way. OpSeF defines standard inputs and outputs, thereby facilitating modular workflow design and interoperability with other software. Users play an important role in problem definition, quality control, and manual refinement of results. All analyst tasks are optimized for deployment on Linux workstations or GPU clusters, all user tasks may be performed on any laptop in ImageJ.OpSeF semi-automates preprocessing, convolutional neural network (CNN)-based segmentation in 2D or 3D, and post-processing. It facilitates benchmarking of multiple models in parallel. OpSeF streamlines the optimization of parameters for pre- and post-processing such, that an available model may frequently be used without retraining. Even if sufficiently good results are not achievable with this approach, intermediate results can inform the analysts in the selection of the most promising CNN-architecture in which the biomedical user might invest the effort of manually labeling training data.We provide Jupyter notebooks that document sample workflows based on various image collections. Analysts may find these notebooks useful to illustrate common segmentation challenges, as they prepare the advanced user for gradually taking over some of their tasks and completing their projects independently. The notebooks may also be used to explore the analysis options available within OpSeF in an interactive way and to document and share final workflows.Currently, three mechanistically distinct CNN-based segmentation methods, the U-Net implementation used in Cellprofiler 3.0, StarDist, and Cellpose have been integrated within OpSeF. The addition of new networks requires little, the addition of new models requires no coding skills. Thus, OpSeF might soon become both an interactive model repository, in which pre-trained models might be shared, evaluated, and reused with ease.

<p>Cloud cover is a crucial information for many applications such as planning land observation missions from space. However, cloud cover remains a challenging variable to forecast, and Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models suffer from significant biases, hence justifying the use of statistical post-processing techniques. In our application, the ground truth is a gridded cloud cover product derived from satellite observations over Europe, and predictors are spatial fields of various variables produced by ARPEGE (Météo-France global NWP) at the corresponding lead time.</p><p>In this study, ARPEGE cloud cover is post-processed using a convolutional neural network (CNN). CNN is the most popular machine learning tool to deal with images. In our case, CNN allows to integrate spatial information contained in NWP outputs. We show that a simple U-Net architecture produces significant improvements over Europe. Compared to the raw ARPEGE forecasts, MAE drops from 25.1 % to 17.8 % and RMSE decreases from 37.0 % to 31.6 %. Considering specific needs for earth observation, special interest was put on forecasts with low cloud cover conditions (< 10 %). For this particular nebulosity class, we show that hit rate jumps from 40.6 to 70.7 (which is the order of magnitude of what can be achieved using classical machine learning algorithms such as random forests) while false alarm decreases from 38.2 to 29.9. This is an excellent result, since improving hit rates by means of random forests usually also results in a slight increase of false alarms.</p>

Electronic tongue type sensor arrays are made of different materials with the property of capturing signals independently by each sensor. The signals captured when conducting electrochemical tests often have high dimensionality, which increases when performing the data unfolding process. This unfolding process consists of arranging the data coming from different experiments, sensors, and sample times, thus the obtained information is arranged in a two-dimensional matrix. In this work, a description of a tool for the analysis of electronic tongue signals is developed. This tool is developed in Matlab® App Designer, to process and classify the data from different substances analyzed by an electronic tongue type sensor array. The data processing is carried out through the execution of the following stages: (1) data unfolding, (2) normalization, (3) dimensionality reduction, (4) classification through a supervised machine learning model, and finally (5) a cross-validation procedure to calculate a set of classification performance measures. Some important characteristics of this tool are the possibility to tune the parameters of the dimensionality reduction and classifier algorithms, and also plot the two and three-dimensional scatter plot of the features after reduced the dimensionality. This to see the data separability between classes and compatibility in each class. This interface is successfully tested with two electronic tongue sensor array datasets with multi-frequency large amplitude pulse voltammetry (MLAPV) signals. The developed graphical user interface allows comparing different methods in each of the mentioned stages to find the best combination of methods and thus obtain the highest values of classification performance measures.
