Recent advances in the field of neural rehabilitation, facilitated through technological innovation and improved neurophysiological knowledge of impaired motor control, have opened up new research directions. Such advances increase the relevance of existing interventions, as well as allow novel methodologies and technological synergies. New approaches attempt to partially overcome long-term disability caused by spinal cord injury, using either invasive bridging technologies or noninvasive human–machine interfaces. Muscular dystrophies benefit from electromyography and novel sensors that shed light on underlying neuromotor mechanisms in people with Duchenne. Novel wearable robotics devices are being tailored to specific patient populations, such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, and amputated individuals. In addition, developments in robot-assisted rehabilitation may enhance motor learning and generate movement repetitions by decoding the brain activity of patients during therapy. This is further facilitated by artificial intelligence algorithms coupled with faster electronics. The practical impact of integrating such technologies with neural rehabilitation treatment can be substantial. They can potentially empower nontechnically trained individuals—namely, family members and professional carers—to alter the programming of neural rehabilitation robotic setups, to actively get involved and intervene promptly at the point of care. This narrative review considers existing and emerging neural rehabilitation technologies through the perspective of replacing or restoring functions, enhancing, or improving natural neural output, as well as promoting or recruiting dormant neuroplasticity. Upon conclusion, we discuss the future directions for neural rehabilitation research, diagnosis, and treatment based on the discussed technologies and their major roadblocks. This future may eventually become possible through technological evolution and convergence of mutually beneficial technologies to create hybrid solutions.

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are very promising sustainable mobility solutions. Series, parallel and series-parallel (SP) seem to be three most promising architectures among the multitude of hybrid architectures, and it is possible to find them in a multi-applications such as the motorcycles, family-cars, hybrid city busses and sport cars. It is import to have a well configured model in order to develop the different control strategies (CsTs) for each application. Therefore, a multi-architecture/multi-application (MAMA) approach capable of identifying the most energy efficient hybrid architecture considering both the dimensions of key components: electric motor (EM), battery, internal combustion engine (ICE) and the optimal control is presented. Basis of the model is the energetic macroscopic representation (EMR), which has been combined with object oriented programming (OOP) in order to enhance its modularity and reuse capabilities. The obtained results show, that different hybrid architectures are most adapted for different applications. Moreover, the robustness of the results using real time control algorithms are studied, showing that CsT matters. The obtained results contribute to simplify and harmonize the design of hybrid solutions for multiple applications.

The subject of this research is the development of the architecture of expert system for distributed content aggregation system, the main purpose of which is the categorization of aggregated data. The author examines the advantages and disadvantages of expert systems, toolset for development of expert systems, classification of expert systems, as well as application of expert systems for categorization of data. Special attention is given to the description of architecture of the proposed expert system, which consists of spam filter, component for determination of the main category for each type of the processed content, and components for determination of subcategories, one of which is based on the domain rules, and the other uses the methods of machine learning methods and complements the first one. The conclusion is made that expert system can be effectively applied for solution of the problems of categorization of data in the content aggregation systems. The author establishes that hybrid solutions, which combine an approach based on the use of knowledge base and rules with implementation of neural networks allow reducing the cost of the expert system. The novelty of this research lies in the proposed architecture of the system, which is easily extensible and adaptable to workloads by scaling existing modules or adding new ones. The proposed module for spam detection leans on adapting the behavioral algorithm for detecting spam in emails; the proposed module for determination of the key categories of content uses two types of algorithms: fuzzy fingerprints and Twitter topic fuzzy fingerprints that was initially applied for categorization of messages in the social network Twitter. The module that determine subcategory based on the keywords functions in interaction with the thesaurus database. The latter classifier uses the reference vector algorithm for the final determination of subcategories.

Non-volatile memory (NVM) technologies offer a number of advantages over conventional memory technologies such as SRAM and DRAM. These include a smaller area requirement, a lower energy requirement for reading and partly for writing, too, and, of course, the non-volatility and especially the qualitative advantage of multi-bit capability. It is expected that memristors based on resistive random access memories (ReRAMs), phase-change memories, or spin-transfer torque random access memories will replace conventional memory technologies in certain areas or complement them in hybrid solutions. To support the design of systems that use NVMs, there is still research to be done on the modeling side of NVMs. In this paper, we focus on multi-bit ternary memories in particular. Ternary NVMs allow the implementation of extremely memory-efficient ternary weights in neural networks, which have sufficiently high accuracy in interference, or they are part of carry-free fast ternary adders. Furthermore, we lay a focus on the technology side of memristive ReRAMs. In this paper, a novel memory model in the circuit level is presented to support the design of systems that profit from ternary data representations. This model considers two read methods of ternary ReRAMs, namely, serial read and parallel read. They are extensively studied and compared in this work, as well as the write-verification method that is often used in NVMs to reduce the device stress and to increase the endurance. In addition, a comprehensive tool for the ternary model was developed, which is capable of performing energy, performance, and area estimation for a given setup. In this work, three case studies were conducted, namely, area cost per trit, excessive parameter selection for the write-verification method, and the assessment of pulse width variation and their energy latency trade-off for the write-verification method in ReRAM.

Abstract Based on a case study of the lived experiences of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh between 2017 and 2019, this article focuses on displaced people’s digital needs and innovative efforts to navigate the challenges in their situation. The article first discusses the major barriers faced by Rohingya refugees in using various digital devices and platforms and how these obstacles adversely affect them in obtaining necessary information and humanitarian services. Our findings from the field highlight the uniquely important role that mobile repair shops in the camps play in providing online-offline hybrid solutions to circumvent restrictions imposed on the refugee community by the host government. The findings also show that different types of community leaders have emerged and that Rohingya women use digital means to push back against double discrimination. The article concludes with policy considerations related to the geopolitically transcendent issues of displacement, democracy, and digital rights.

The problem of matching production levels for individual products to demand fluctuations during multiple periods is known in the production planning literature as the multi-product multi-period (MPMP) problem. Linear programming (LP)-based solutions have been extensively reported in this respect. MPMP problems are commonly solved by using either analytic or simulation methods. More recently, hybrid solutions consisting of both analytical models and simulation analysis have been proposed where some operational criteria, e.g. the order of visit to machining centres, are taken into account. In this paper, results related to some of the literature based on hybrid solutions are used as the initial feasible solutions and then examined in the context of project scheduling by considering the influences of resource constraints. After converting the MPMP to a project network problem and assigning resources to activities and consequently levelling the resource profiles, it is discovered that machine utilization can be further improved by applying unused machine capacities. A LP model is therefore developed in order to maximize feasible production rates over all the production planning periods. The proposed approach results in improvements on the results of earlier hybrid solutions reported in the literature. Finally, three different planning problems are suggested for further applications of the proposed approach in the context of manufacturing environments.
