AbstractA promising new process for the regeneration of solvents with ionic liquid by molecular distillation has been proposed. The main advantage of this process compared with the classic stripping of acids with alkali solution is that the volatile organic acid is recovered with a yield of about 88 % in the form of free acid, not as its salt. Furthermore, improvement on the yield of the stripping can be assumed. The consumption of chemicals in stripping by molecular distillation is reduced.

Chiral ionic liquids, starting from (S)-proline, have been prepared and evaluated the ability of a chiral catalyst. In Michael reaction of trans-β-nitrostyrene and cyclohexanone, all the reactions were carried out under homogeneous conditions without any solvent except for excess cyclohexanone. The chiral ionic liquid catalyst with the positive charge delocalized bulky pyrrolidinium cation shows excellent yields (up to 92%), diastereoselectivities (syn/anti = 96/4), and enantioselectivities (up to 95% ee) and could be reused at least three times without any loss of its catalytic activity. Such results demonstrated a promising new approach for green and economic chiral synthesis by using the chiral ionic liquids as a chiral catalyst and a chiral medium.

ABSTRACTA new approach for functionalising oxidised MWCNTs using hydroxylated imidazolium bromide via esterification reaction is reported. The bromide anion of a functionalised MWCNTs was exchanged with bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (TFSI) through a metathesis reaction to improve its solubility in the IL medium. Composite was characterized with IR, XPS, EDX and TGA analysis, which clearly confirmed that the MWCNTs were functionalized with IL. For potential application as lubricant, the tribological properties of the IL-functionalised MWCNTs (MWCNT-IL) were also evaluated. It was confirmed that even low concentrations of MWCNT-IL composite in ILs causes a significant improvement in the anti-wear and friction properties.

Inexpensive Brønsted acidic ionic liquids based on trimethylamine and sulfuric acid are proposed as both solvents and catalysts in the synthesis of alternative plasticizer bis(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate, which has a broad spectrum of applications in plasticization processes. The utilization of 50 mol % of Brønsted ionic liquid led to the full conversion of terephthalic acid after 8 h of reaction at 120 °C. Additionally, a 100% selectivity of bis(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate was obtained. The advantage of the presented reaction system is based on the formation of a biphasic system during the reaction. The bottom phase consists of an ionic liquid and water, and the upper phase is created by the ester and unreacted alcohol. This phenomenon helps overcome the equilibrium of the reaction and drives it towards a high yield of product. The presented new approach is proposed as a safe, cost-effective, and alternative method to conventional processes with organometallic compounds that, in turn, leads to greener and a more economically viable technology.
