Abstract Most commercial anion exchange membranes (AEMs) deploy quaternary ammonium moieties. Alternative cation moieties have been explored in AEMs for fuel cells, but there are no studies focused examining alternative tethered cations in AEMs for ionic separations – such as organic acid anion transport via electrodialysis. H-cell and conductivity experiments demonstrate that tethered benzyl 1-methyl imidazolium groups in polysulfone AEMs enhance lactate conductivity by 49% and improved lactate anion flux by 24x when compared to a quaternary benzyl ammonium polysulfone AEM. An electrodialysis demonstration with the imidazolium-type AEM showed a 2x improvement in lactate anion flux and 20% improvement in permselectivity when benchmarked against the quaternary ammonium AEM. Molecular dynamics and 2D NOESY NMR revealed closer binding of lactate anions to the imidazolium cations when compared to the quaternary ammonium cation. It is posited that this closer binding is responsible to greater flux values observed with imidazolium-type AEM.

In this study, in which the effects of different applications of vermicompost on the yield and quality of San Andreas strawberry variety were investigated 15, 30, 45, 60 g vermicompost was applied per plant. First flowering, first and last harvest dates, number of fruits per plant, yield per plant (g/plant), fruit weight (g), fruit flavor, macro and micro nutrient content, organic acid amounts were examined. The results showed that the differences between treatments in yield per plant were statistically significant. The highest total yield per plant was obtained from V45 and V30 applications with 972.8 g and 878.9 g respectively and the lowest yield was obtained from the control application with 384.2 g per plant. The largest fruits were obtained from the V60 (19.5 g) application. It was determined that nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sulfur, manganese, iron, zinc and boron concentrations in the leaves of strawberry plants fertilized with vermicompost were higher than the control. The highest values in organic acid values were determined in oxalic, propionic, malonic, lactic, fumaric and succinic acids in V60 application (5.62, 11.16, 49.00, 104.98 µg/100 g respectively). It seems that the application of vermicompost fertilizer in strawberry cultivation has a positive effect on yield and quality characteristics.

Pear is a perennial deciduous fruit tree of the Rosaceae Pyrus genus, and is one of the main fruit trees worldwide. The pathogen Botryosphaeria dothidea infects pear trees and causes pear ring rot disease. According to our research, exogenous melatonin application enhanced resistance to B. dothidea in pear fruit. Melatonin treatment of pears significantly reduced the diameter of disease spots and enhanced the endogenous melatonin content under B. dothidea inoculation. Compared with H2O treatment, melatonin treatment suppressed the increase in ROS and activated ROS-scavenging enzymes. Treatment with exogenous melatonin maintained AsA-GSH at more reductive status. The expression levels of core autophagic genes and autophagosome formation were elevated by melatonin treatment in pear fruit. The silencing of PbrATG5 in Pyrus pyrifolia conferred sensitivity to inoculation, which was only slightly recovered by melatonin treatment. After inoculation with B. dothidea, exogenous melatonin treatment increased the contents of soluble sugars and organic acids in pear fruits compared with H2O treatment. Our results demonstrated that melatonin enhanced resistance to B. dothidea by increasing the autophagic activity and soluble sugar/organic acid accumulation.
