Family with children affected by genetic factors or teratogenics involving functional, aesthetic and psychological sequels such as cleft lip and palate are vulnerable to several stress levels and need corrective and rehabilitation interventions. This study aimed to investigate the stress levels of fathers and mothers before and after surgical intervention in children with cleft lip and palate. The participants were 14 parents of children diagnosed with Cleft Incisive Transforamen Unilateral and Bilateral Incisive Transforamen of both genders, 21-53 participants of the surgical intervention program at the Hospital de Reabilitação de Anomalias Craniofaciais, Universidade de São Paulo in the city of Bauru, State of São Paulo. The results have allowed us to conclude that the people responsible for patients, patients and parents of the patients with cleft palatal lip, in surgical situation, present higher levels of stress in the period of pre-surgery, with modified quality in the autonomic aspects of the organism, besides bodily significantly unsatisfactory reactions.

Abstract Support better mental health is a long-term investment. Stressful life events and chronic adversity have a substantial impact on brain functions and may result in mental health problems. Stress during academic life was already established as a problem, and university students have a high-stress rate. Create and improve strategies to lower those levels can increase student wellbeing. Smartphones connect individuals across the world, and its software applications may have the ability to facilitate behavior change. Mindfulness-based interventions bring positive results for physical and mental health and are recommended to reduce stress. We offered a Mindfulness-based program for stress reduction for eight weeks on a progressive web application (app) for higher education students. The main objective of the project is to increase wellbeing by reducing stress levels in university students, providing them with tools and knowledge through a digital intervention program. Individuals completed the Warwick - Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale before the 1st, in the 5th week, and the 8th week of intervention. The pilot study counted with 15 participants from 4 countries, from undergrad to postdoc. Preliminary results showed that participants are mostly female (69%) from a master (52%) in health sciences (45%) and located in Brazil (50%). The access was usually via mobile (67%), and the first month had six times more visits and 1.3 times more meditations listened than the second. Participants improved their test score considering before (M = 43.20, 5.26) and after (M = 49.80, SE = 6.90), t(4)= -3.404, p = 0.027, demonstrating an increase of wellbeing after the program. Our lessons were: To maintain adhesion rate to the program constant. Provide access to professional help if needed. Turn the progressive web app into a native IOS and Android app. Integrate the smartphone application into university health programs with the possibility of referrals to mental health professionals. Key messages An intervention program as a progressive web app designed for academic students to improve wellbeing can offer good cost-benefit, ample reach, and early detection of cases that need specialized help. Provide a readily available and understandable program that permits the improvement of stress levels and wellbeing may be a possibility to decrease academic abandon and improve academic achievements.

Purpose: To assess the feasibility of a pilot mindfulness intervention program, the Emergency Resiliency Initiative (ERI), as well as to investigate changes in burnout scores and key drivers to burnout among registered nurses (RNs) and patient care technicians (PCTs) in a Level 1 trauma center emergency department (ED). Design: A mixed methods pre/post study with data collection points before and after the 3-month intervention. Method: Three mindfulness educational/experiential sessions were delivered once a month at staff meetings with topic themes of Introduction to Mindfulness, Practical Applications of Mindfulness, and Cultivating Compassion. Participants were asked to complete a minimum of two weekly 5-minute meditations. Burnout scores were assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory at preintervention (baseline) and postintervention. Findings: From the pre- ( n = 35) to post- ( n = 26) intervention period there was a significant increase in personal accomplishment scores ( p = .01) and decrease in emotional exhaustion scores ( p = .03) for RNs and PCTs combined. Qualitative interviews revealed five burnout-related themes: (a) prioritization distress, (b) change fatigue, (c) self-protection through superficiality, (d) intentional response, and (e) community amid chaos. Conclusion: The ERI was a feasible and acceptable program associated with improvements in burnout scores. Qualitative interviews revealed the positive impacts of mindfulness on ED clinician resiliency and identified future opportunities to address burnout from a holistic perspective.

Background: The objective of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of a mindfulness-based intervention program for the promotion of well-being and health in family caregivers. Methods: The participants were 111 family women caregivers aged between 33 and 75 years old. This was a double-blinded randomized controlled trial. The mindfulness intervention program lasted 12 weeks. The experimental group underwent mindfulness and acceptance-based interventions (MABIs). The control group performed physical activity training. Results: A cross-lagged panel analysis was computed with the two waves of health, well-being, burden and resilience and age in years and intervention as predictors. The cross-lagged path model fit well χ² (8) = 7.179, p = 0.51, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.00, comparative fit index (CFI)= 1.00, standardized root mean square residual (SRMR) = 0.05. The mindfulness intervention program was a significant predictor accounting for decreasing health problems (β = −0.292, p < 0.01) and burden (β = −0.190, p < 0.01) and increasing well-being (β = 0.107, p < 0.05) at post-test. Conclusions: Mindfulness-based intervention programs are effective in coping with the burden of family caregivers and, in turn, in promoting resilience, well-being and health among caregivers. Our findings encourage clinical uses of mindfulness interventions to promote health.

Test-teach questioning is a strategy that can be used to help children develop basic concepts. It fosters the use of multisensory exploration and discovery in learning which leads to the development of cognitive-linguistic skills. This article outlines some of the theoretical bases for this approach and indicates possibilities for their applications in child-clinician transactions.

This article describes an early intervention program designed for speech-language pathologists enrolled in a master's-level program. The program provided students with courses and clinical experiences that prepared them to work with birth to 5-year-old children and their families in a family-centered, interdisciplinary, and ecologically valid manner. The effectiveness of the program was documented by pre- and post-training measures and supported the feasibility of instituting an early childhood specialization within a traditional graduate program in speech-language pathology.
