Even though intensifiers have received a good deal of attention over the past few decades, downtoners, comprising diminishers and minimizers, have remained by and large a neglected category (but cf. Brinton, this issue). Among downtoners, the adverb little or a little stands out as the most frequent item. It is multifunctional and serves as a diminishing and minimizing intensifier and also in non-degree uses as a quantifier, frequentative, and durative. Therefore, the present paper is devoted to the structural and functional profile of ( a) little in Late Modern English speech-related data. The data source is the socio-pragmatically annotated Old Bailey Corpus (OBC, version 2.0), which allows, among other things, the investigation of the usage of the item among different speaker groups. Our research charts the semantic and formal uses of adverbial little. Downtoner uses outnumber non-degree uses in the data, and diminishing uses are more common than minimizing uses. The formal realization is predominantly a little, with very rare determinerless or modified instances, such as very little. Little modifies a wide range of “targets,” but most frequently adjectives and prepositional phrases, focusing on human states and circumstantial detail. With regard to variation and change, adverbial little declines in use over the 200 years and is used more commonly by speakers from the lower social ranks and by the lay, non-professional participants in the courtroom.

ABSTRACT The G1 cyclins of budding yeast drive cell cycle initiation by different mechanisms, but the molecular basis of their specificity is unknown. Here we test the hypothesis that the functional specificity of G1 cyclins is due to differential subcellular localization. As shown by indirect immunofluorescence and biochemical fractionation, Cln3p localization appears to be primarily nuclear, with the most obvious accumulation of Cln3p to the nuclei of large budded cells. In contrast, Cln2p localizes to the cytoplasm. We were able to shift localization patterns of truncated Cln3p by the addition of nuclear localization and nuclear export signals, and we found that nuclear localization drives a Cln3p-like functional profile, while cytoplasmic localization leads to a partial shift to a Cln2p-like functional profile. Therefore, forcing Cln3p into a Cln2p-like cytoplasmic localization pattern partially alters the functional specificity of Cln3p toward that of Cln2p. These results suggest that there are CLN-dependent cytoplasmic and nuclear events important for cell cycle initiation. This is the first indication of a cytoplasmic function for a cyclin-dependent kinase. The data presented here support the idea that cyclin function is regulated at the level of subcellular localization and that subcellular localization contributes to the functional specificity of Cln2p and Cln3p.

An optimal sports selection is formed by assessment of genotype (dermatoglyph) and phenotype (somatotype, body composition and physical abilities). The purpose of the study was to determine relationship between dermatoglyphics and morpho-functional profile in professional futsal athletes in the city Bogotá. The sample consisted of 12 men, who were anthropometrically evaluated, with a fat % of 18,4 ± 5,9; a musculoskeletal mass of 32,4 ± 4,4 kg and endo-mesomorphic somatotype. Through of dermatoglyphics, predominance was determined in the fingerprint designs L (69,2 ± 23,1), D10 (11,3 ± 3,6), SQTL (140,7 ± 95,1). Finally, explosive force was assessed with the Squat Jump test, in which the post position achieved the greatest height. In conclusion, there is a predisposition towards the physical capacities of speed, power, coordination and resistance, in addition the explosive force is greater in athletes with a lower value in endomorphic component and in percentage of fat mass.
