Background: Down syndrome (DS) is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability.Although progress in managing co-morbidities has improved life expectancy, no therapeutic options have showed to significantly improve intellectual deficiencies.The current focus of the pharmacological treatment of DS is on the improvement of the cognitive impairment that is probably due to neurodevelopmental alterations,neurotransmitter alterations and neurodegeneration,and is also targeted to the overexpression of selected genes on HSA21. Methods: We review the clinical trials of the last 5 years focusing on the cognitive improvement of children with DS. Results: We report the results of therapeutic trials concerning selective negative allosteric regulators of the GABAAa5 receptor, NMDA antagonists, Kinase inhibitors of DYRK1A, folinic acid and thyroid hormone supplementation, activators of serotonergic and cholinergic system. Conclusions: The incomplete understanding of individual phenotypic variability, natural history, lack of biomarkers, no adapted neuropsychological tests, placebo effect, epigenetic effect have limited our capacity to succeed, even when promising drugs are tested.We need new tools and models will allow a better understanding of the pathophysiology. We also need to create more sensitive and realistic outcome mesures to quantify disease and therapeutic efficacy. The association of different therapeutic agents (epidrugs included) with cognitive stimulation could be a future strategy.

There are few studies in which the focus is on cognitive determinants of artwork bidding. Using a micro approach, we explored factors that may influence bidders' offering from a psychological perspective. The 157 participants rated 25 paintings on the price they were willing to offer for works by famous Chinese artists executed in the traditional Chinese style and variants of the same works by a modern Chinese artist working in adaptations of the style of famous Western artists. Results showed that for both the Chinese and Western-style paintings in 3 price anchoring and 3 price nonanchoring conditions, 3 factors affected the bidding for the artworks: positive attraction, artistic quality, and cognitive stimulation. Of these factors positive attraction and artistic quality were the primary influences. In each condition, positive attraction was always the positive predictor of the bidders' offering, emphasizing the importance of the artwork's aesthetic value. In contrast, artistic quality deterred participants from bidding. In addition, whether or not there was a reference-point price made a difference in the traditional Chinese group of artworks. Bidders wished to offer a higher price only if the price had been high for the previous example of this artist's work that had sold.

Down syndrome causes a reduction in cognitive abilities, with visual-motor skills being particularly affected. In this work, we have focused on this skill in order to stimulate better learning. The proposal relies on stimulating the cognitive visual-motor skills of individuals with Down Syndrome (DS) using exercises with a gestural interaction platform based on the KINECT sensor named TANGO:H, the goal being to improve them. To validate the proposal, an experimental single-case study method was designed using two groups: a control group and an experimental one, with similar cognitive ages. Didactic exercises were provided to the experimental group using visual cognitive stimulation. These exercises were created on the TANGO:H Designer, a platform that was designed for gestural interaction using the KINECT sensor. As a result, TANGO:H allows for visual-motor cognitive stimulation through the movement of hands, arms, feet and head. The “Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities (ITPA)” was applied to both groups as a pre-test and post-test in its four reference sections: visual comprehension, visual-motor sequential memory, visual association, and visual integration. Two checks were made, one using the longitudinal comparison of the pre-test/post-test of the experimental group, and another that relied on comparing the difference of the means of the pre-test/post-test. We also used an observational methodology for the working sessions from the experimental group. Although the statistical results do not show significant differences between the two groups, the results of the observations exhibited an improvement in visual-motor cognitive skills.

The Cognitive Stimulation and Emotional Intelligence for Seniors Program (PECI-PM), combines cognitive stimulation with intervention and stimulation of aspects related to emotional intelligence. The purpose of this study was to analyze the emotional intelligence results of the first stage of PECI-PM implementation. A sample of 28 program users who had completed 20 sessions and participated in the two evaluations (pre-post) was employed for this. Emotional Intelligence was evaluated before and after intervention using the Inventario Breve de Inteligencia Emocional para Mayores [Brief Emotional Intelligence Inventory for Senior Citizens] (EQ-i-M20). After intervention with the PECI-PM, improvement was observed in most of the emotional intelligence dimensions (Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Adaptability and Mood). In the Stress Management dimension, there was no change in scores after intervention, which leads us to reconsider the weight of this emotional intelligence dimension in the older population. On the other hand, the role of the Interpersonal dimension, which correlates significantly with other emotional intelligence factors (Intrapersonal and Adaptability) in older people, should be emphasized.

The study was conducted in 2019 over a period of 8 months in Ilfov County. The study included 148 participants (N = 148). The control group (GC) consists of 74 children, 34 boys and 40 girls. Of the 74 children, 17 are 4 years old, 22 are 5 years old and 35 are 6 years old. The experimental group (GE) consists of 74 children, 32 boys and 42 girls. Of the 74 children, 21 are 4 years old, 21 are 5 years old and 32 are 6 years old. The study aimed to examine the impact of cognitive stimulation of preschoolers in workshops with group and individual sessions on cognitive development. The results show the positive impact of the methods used on the cognitive development of preschoolers. The cognitive stimulation program proposes an innovative therapeutic environment, motivating and compatible with the reality of each child. The activities of stimulating the cognitive abilities of the participants in the experimental group included the Feuerstein working method, which proved promising preliminary results, which determines us to expand our studies in the future. The preschoolers in the control group received only the stimulation related to the educational activities and programs.
