Common approaches to large flood management are Natural Water Retention Measures and detention basins. In this study, a Partial Least Squares-Path Model (PLS-PM) was defined to set up a relationship between dam wall heights and biophysical parameters, in critical flood risk zones of continental Portugal. The purpose was to verify if the heights responded to changes in the biophysical variables, and in those cases to forecast landscape changes capable to reduce the heights towards sustainable values (e.g., <8 m). The biophysical parameters comprised a diversity of watershed characteristics, such as land use and geology, surface runoff, climate indicators and the dam heights. The results have shown that terrain slope (w > 0.5), rainfall (w > 0.4) and sedimentary rocks (w > 0.5) are among the most important variables in the model. Changes in these parameters would trigger visible changes in the dam wall height, but they are not easily or rapidly modified by human activity. On the other hand, the parameters forest occupation and runoff coefficient seem to play a less prominent role in the model (w < 0.1), even though they can be significantly modified by human intervention. Consequently, in a scenario of land cover change where forest occupation is increased by 30% and impermeable surfaces are decreased by 30%, interferences in the dam heights were small. These results open a discussion about the feasibility to mitigate large floods using non-structural measures such as reforestation.

The dynamic nature of today’s technology market requires new value-characteristic modeling methods; mainstream methods have limitations due to unrealistic assumptions, such as static customer preferences and no multicollinearity among product attributes. In particular, products with longer cycle times can suffer because the static model ignores changes in the market during the concept-to-customer lead time. This study proposes a dynamic, partial least squares path model for customer driven product design and development in order to reduce model uncertainty by formulating preference models to reflect market dynamics. The proposed dynamic model adopted partial least squares regression to handle the limited observations plagued by multicollinearity among product attributes. The main advantage of the proposed model is its ability to evaluate design alternatives during the front-end concept screening phase, using the overall product-value metric, customer-revealed value. A case study analyzing the US car market data for sedans from 1990 to 2010 showed the potential for the proposed method to be effective, with a 3.40 mean absolute percentage error.

Institution of higher learning in Malaysia has implemented an Outcome-Based Education (OBE) since 2007. Among the crucial components of OBE were the Program Education Objectives (PEOs) and Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs). The development of PEOs has to take into consideration the involvement of stakeholders, in order to address their needs and requirements and also must in line with the institutional vision and mission. PLOs, on the other hand, has to be aligned with PEOs to attain OBE. The study withal strive the relationship between PLOs and PEOs in OBE by using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) approach as the sample size was too small to utilize Structural Equation Modelling-Analysis of Moment Structure (SEM-AMOS). A simple random sampling was used to select 90 teachers throughout Malaysia. The selected teachers were a graduate of Sultan Idris Education University's (UPSI) Mathematics Education Degree (BEd Maths). From the analysis, it revealed that all the relationships in the developed model were significant at p<0.001. The results indicated that the developed model was strengthened by empirical analysis and in parallel with the preceding findings and theoretical framework. Apart of PEOs and PLOs path model, the study also successfully validated all the indicator variables depicted in PEOs and PLOs measurement model. This study had successfully developed and evaluated PEOs and PLOs relationship in OBE by means of structural equation model through PLS-SEM approach. In conclusions, the relationship between PEOs and PLOs can not only be expressed qualitatively, but also be modeled in the structural equation.

This study measure the relationship between perceived organizational support and organizational commitment. Data were collected from 100 government employee in Malaysia in a cross-sectional study using survey method. The partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) version 3.3 was used for data analysis to test on convergent validity. The outcomes of testing hypothesis using Smart Partial Least Squares (Smart PLS) path model analysis reveals two findings, first: supervisor support significantly positive with organizational commitment. Second, co-workers support significantly positive with organizational commitment. Further, theoretical, discussion, implications and conclusion are elaborated
