Aluminum (Al) toxicity and drought are two major constraints on plant growth in acidic soils, negatively affecting crop performance and yield. Genotypic differences in the effects of Al/low pH and polyethyleneglycol (PEG) induced drought stress, applied either individually or in combination, were studied in Tibetan wild (XZ5, drought-tolerant; XZ29, Al-tolerant) and cultivated barley (Al-tolerant Dayton; drought-tolerant Tadmor). Tibetan wild barley XZ5 and XZ29 had significantly higher H+-ATPase, Ca2+Mg2+-ATPase, and Na+K+-ATPase activities at pH 4.0+Al+PEG than Dayton and Tadmor. Moreover, XZ5 and XZ29 possessed increased levels in reduced ascorbate and glutathione under these conditions, and antioxidant enzyme activities were largely stimulated by exposure to pH 4.0+PEG, pH 4.0+Al, and pH 4.0+Al+PEG, compared to a control and to Dayton and Tadmor. The activity of methylglyoxal (MG) was negatively correlated with increased levels of glyoxalase (Gly) I and Gly II in wild barley. Microscopic imaging of each genotype revealed DNA damage and obvious ultrastructural alterations in leaf cells treated with drought or Al alone, and combined pH 4.0+Al+PEG stress; however, XZ29 and XZ5 were less affected than Dayton and Tadmor. Collectively, the authors findings indicated that the higher tolerance of the wild barley to combined pH 4.0+Al+PEG stress is associated with improved ATPase activities, increased glyoxalase activities, reduced MG, and lower reactive oxygen species levels (like O2− and H2O2) due to increased antioxidant enzyme activities. These results offer a broad comprehension of the mechanisms implicated in barley’s tolerance to the combined stress of Al/low pH and drought, and may provide novel insights into the potential utilization of genetic resources, thereby facilitating the development of barley varieties tolerant to drought and Al/low pH stress.

Juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) (∼0.6 g) were exposed to 3 µmol Al·L–1 in ion-poor water adjusted to pH 4–10 in the absence or presence of natural organic matter (NOM). Aluminum accumulation by trout gills was highest at pH 6–8, there was moderate Al accumulation by trout gills at pH 5 and 9, and trout at pH 4 and 10 did not accumulate any Al on their gills. NOM at 5 mg C·L–1 eliminated Al accumulation by trout gills at all water pHs. These results are explained by NOM complexing Al and keeping Al in solution but off the gills, by H+ competition with Al3+ at low pH, by poor binding of the Al(OH)4– anion to negatively charged gills at high pH, and by polymerization and precipitation of Al onto the gills at intermediate water pH, especially if water pH in the gill micro environment is considered. Increased fish mortality at pH 10 in the presence of NOM is explained by the indirect effect of NOM tying up the limited amount of Ca in the ion-poor water.

Mucopolysaccharides have been demonstrated biochemically in catecholamine-containing subcellular particles in different rat, cat and ox tissues. As catecholamine-containing granules seem to arise from the Golgi apparatus and some also from the axoplasmic reticulum we examined wether carbohydrate macromolecules could be detected in the small and large dense core vesicles and in structures related to them. To this purpose superior cervical ganglia and irises from rabbit and cat and coeliac ganglia and their axons from dog were subjected to the chromaffin reaction to show the distribution of catecholamine-containing granules. Some material was also embedded in glycolmethacrylate (GMA) and stained with phosphotungstic acid (PTA) at low pH for the detection of carbohydrate macromolecules. The chromaffin reaction in the perikarya reveals mainly large dense core vesicles, but in the axon hillock, the axons and the terminals, the small dense core vesicles are more prominent. In the axons the small granules are sometimes seen inside a reticular network (fig. 1).

SummaryA sensitive tool has been described for measuring fibrinolysis in reconstituted systems using thrombelastography. Activator mixtures with no appreciable proteolytic activity can similarly be tested in this system when the fibrinogen utilized has sufficient plasminogen present. Exposure of human plasminstreptokinase mixtures formed at pH 7.0 to acid conditions produced a striking loss of activator activity which could not be ascribed to low pH lability of the components, nor to plasmin action on the SK at pH 2.0. This is additional evidence for the hypothesis that human plasmin interacts with SK to form a complex capable of converting human and bovine plasminogen to plasmin.

The aim of this study was to investigate the properties of hydrophobically modified (HM) quaterna-ry ammonium starch ethers for paper sizing. These starches possess temperature-responsive properties; that is, gelation or phase separation occurs at a certain temperature upon cooling. This insolubility of the HM starches in water at room temperature improved their performance as sizing agents. The contact angles for water on sized liner were substantially larger than on unsized liner. When the application temperature was well above the critical phase-separation temperature, larger contact angles were obtained for liner independently of pH compared with those at the lower application temperature. Cobb60 values for liner decreased upon surface sizing, with a low pH and high application temperature giving lower water penetration. Contact angles on greaseproof paper decreased upon sur-face sizing as compared to unsized greaseproof paper, independently of pH and temperature. Greaseproof paper showed no great difference between unsized substrates and substrates sized with HM starch at different pH. This is probably due to the already hydrophobic nature of greaseproof paper. However, the Cobb60 values increased at low pH and low application temperature. Surfactants were added to investigate how they affect the sized surface. Addition of surfactant reduces the contact angles, in spite of indications of complex formation.

Eight yeast strains (denoted as D1 to D8) were isolated from samples of natural fermented pineapple. Strain D8 showed highest alcoholic production at low pH and special aroma of pineapple has been chosen for further study. Taxonomic characterization of strain D8 using morphological, biochemical and molecular biological studies confirmed that strain D8  belong to Saccharomycetaceae family, Saccharomycetales order and Saccharomyces cerevisiae species. Therefore, we named this strain as Saccharomyces cerevisiae D8 for further study on Brandy production from pineapple. Citation: Hoang Thi Le Thuong, Nguyen Quang Hao, Tran Thi Thuy, 2017.
