AbstractSolar filaments are discussed in terms of two contrasting paradigms. The standard paradigm is that filaments are formed by condensation of coronal plasma into magnetic fields that are twisted or dimpled as a consequence of motions of the fields’ sources in the photosphere. According to a new paradigm, filaments form in rising, twisted flux ropes and are a necessary intermediate stage in the transfer to interplanetary space of dynamo-generated magnetic flux. It is argued that the accumulation of magnetic helicity in filaments and their coronal surroundings leads to filament eruptions and coronal mass ejections. These ejections relieve the Sun of the flux generated by the dynamo and make way for the flux of the next cycle.

Abstract Im Kontext des neu aufgekommenen theoretischen Interesses für die Werkkategorie wird überwiegend das ,Einzelwerk‘ fokussiert. Im vorliegenden Aufsatz wird das heuristische Potenzial des Konzepts ,Gesamtwerk‘ als ein anderer Teil der Werkkategorie herausgearbeitet. Neben dem üblichen Aspekt eines ,Lebenswerks‘ schließt das Gesamtwerk vielfältige Werkkomplexe und Werkgruppierungen ein, die auf Produktions- oder Rezeptionsseite entstehen. Analysiert werden feste und variable Anordnungen, Ab- und Entgrenzungen zwischen Einzelwerken eines Autors, die das Gesamtwerk zu einem dynamischen Gefüge machen. Ein Werkkomplex bildet eine Zwischenstufe und ein Bindeglied zwischen ,Einzelwerk‘ und ,Gesamtwerk‘. Daher besitzt er eine besondere Relevanz für die semantische Zusammensetzung der Werkkategorie als Trias, deren Teile sich aufeinander beziehen: Opus – Werkkomplex – Œuvre.The newly arisen theoretical research on the literary work category focuses mainly on the ,single work‘. This paper argues for the heuristic potential of the ,oeuvre‘ as another part of the work category. In addition to the usual aspect of a ,life’s work‘, the oeuvre includes diverse work complexes and work groupings that emerge on the production or reception side. The paper analyzes a dynamic structure of the oeuvre: fixed and variable arrangements, boundaries and dissolution of borders between single works by the same author. A work complex forms an intermediate stage and a link between ,single work‘ and ,oeuvre‘. It therefore has a special relevance for the semantic composition of the work category as a triad, the parts of which refer to each other: single work – work complex – oeuvre.

Fourier series is a well-established subject and widely applied in various fields. However, there is much less work on double Fourier coefficients in relation to spaces of general double sequences. We understand the space of double Fourier coefficients as an abstract space of sequences and examine relationships to spaces of general double sequences: p-power summable sequences for p = 1, 2, and the Hilbert space of double sequences. Using uniform convergence in the sense of a Cesàro mean, we verify the inclusion relationships between the four spaces of double sequences; they are nested as proper subsets. The completions of two spaces of them are found to be identical and equal to the largest one. We prove that the two-parameter Wiener space is isomorphic to the space of Cesàro means associated with double Fourier coefficients. Furthermore, we establish that the Hilbert space of double sequence is an abstract Wiener space. We think that the relationships of sequence spaces verified at an intermediate stage in this paper will provide a basis for the structures of those spaces and expect to be developed further as in the spaces of single-indexed sequences.

Objective To analyze computed tomography (CT) features of symptomatic patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods Ninety-five symptomatic patients with COVID-19 confirmed by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction from 1 May to 14 July 2020 were retrospectively enrolled. Follow-up CT findings and their distributions were analyzed and compared from symptom onset to late-stage disease. Results Among all patients, 15.8% had unilateral lung disease and 84.2% had bilateral disease with slight right lower lobe predilection (47.4%). Regarding lesion density, 49.4% of patients had pure ground glass opacity (GGO) and 50.5% had GGO with consolidation. Typical early-stage patterns were bilateral lesions in 73.6% of patients, diffuse lesions (41.0%), and GGO (65.2%). Pleural effusion occurred in 13.6% and mediastinal lymphadenopathy in 11.5%. During intermediate-stage disease, 47.4% of patients showed GGO as the disease progressed; however, consolidation was the predominant finding (52.6%). Conclusion COVID-19 pneumonia manifested on lung CT scans with bilateral, peripheral, and right lower lobe predominance and was characterized by diffuse bilateral GGO progressing to or coexisting with consolidation within 1 to 3 weeks. The most frequent CT lesion in the early, intermediate, and late phases was GGO. Consolidation appeared in the intermediate phase and gradually increased, ending with reticular and lung fibrosis-like patterns.

Abstract. This study investigated the statistics of eddy splitting and merging in the global oceans based on 23 years’ altimetry data. Multicore structures were identified using an improved threshold-free closed-contour algorithm of sea surface height. Splitting and merging events were discerned from continuous time series maps of sea level anomalies. Multicore structures represent an intermediate stage in the process of eddy evolution, similar to the generation of multiple nuclei in a cell as a preparatory phase for cell division. Generally, splitting or merging events can change substantially (by a factor of two or more) the eddy scale, amplitude, and eddy kinetic energy. Specifically, merging (splitting) generally causes an increase (decrease) of eddy properties. Multicore eddies were found to tend to split into two eddies with different intensities. Similarly, eddy merging is not an interaction of two equal-intensity eddies, and that it tends to manifest as a strong eddy merging with a weaker one. A hybrid tracking strategy based on the eddy overlap ratio, considering both multicore and single-core eddies, was used to confirm splitting and merging events globally. The census revealed that eddy splitting and merging do not always occur most frequently in eddy-rich regions, e.g., their frequencies of occurrence in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and western boundary currents were found obviously higher than mid-latitude regions (20°–35°) north and south. Eddy splitting and merging are caused primarily by an unstable configuration of multicore structures due to obvious current– or eddy–topography interaction, strong current variation, and eddy–mean flow interaction.
