AbstractOil leak from vehicles is one of the most common pollution types of the road. The spilled oil could be retained on the surface and spread in the air voids of the road, which results in a decrease in the friction coefficient of the road, affects driving safety, and causes damage to pavement materials over time. Photocatalytic degradation through nano-TiO2 is a safe, long-lasting, and sustainable technology among the many methods for treating oil contamination on road surfaces. In this study, the nano-TiO2 photocatalytic degradation effect of road surface oil pollution was evaluated through the lab experiment. First, a glass dish was used as a substrate to determine the basic working condition of the test; then, a test method considering the impact of different oil erosion degrees was proposed to eliminate the effect of oil erosion on asphalt pavement and leakage on cement pavement, which led to the development of a lab test method for the nano-TiO2 photocatalytic degradation effect of oil pollution on different road surfaces.

In this paper, the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue solution by photocatalysis bamboo charcoal fiber knitted fabric was studied. The relationships were analyzed between the photocatalytic degradation rate and the reaction time, the initial concentration, pH of methylene blue solution, and the distance between the UV light centre and liquid level. The results indicates that there is an remarkable photocatalytic degradation effect of methylene blue solution by photocatalysis bamboo charcoal fiber knitted fabric under UV-irradiation, even the degradation rate could reach to 67.02%. The degradation effect was better with lower initial concentration of methylene blue solution, higher initial pH,and the shorter distance between light centre and liquid level.

Crack-free PDMS-SiO2-TiO2 composite as photocatalyst was prepared for degrading dyes by using thin-film fixed bed reactor. The hydrophobic surface of the photocatalyst loaded with PDMS-SiO2-TiO2 composite could be considered as an extractant for organic pollutants. The effect of different supports including pumice stone, medicinal stone, and fiberglass for photocatalytic efficiency were compared. Under the same condition, it was found that the photocatalytic degradation effect of dyes was best when PDMS-SiO2-TiO2 composite was fixed on pumice stone rather than medicinal stone or fiberglass. Furthermore, when pumice stone was used as the support for PDMS-SiO2-TiO2 composite, the photocatalytic degradation effect of dyes hardly decreased after five cycles.

Fe-TiO2/AC and Co-TiO2/AC composites were prepared from activated carbon (AC) derived from residues of peanut hulls and TiO2 photocatalyst, electrochemically prepared from titanium scrap, and doped with Fe and Co, respectively. The adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity of the Fe-TiO2/AC and Co-TiO2/AC composites were studied for removing and degrading Cibacron Yellow F-4G (CYF-4G) from wastewater. Doped ACs were characterized by thermogravimetry (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), a new X-ray absorption technique (XRA), and elemental analysis (EA). Interesting relationships were found between SEM, XRA, and TGA data and the doped amount of catalyst on ACs. Optimal dye adsorption was found at a pH of 2.0. The CYF-4G adsorption kinetics are followed according to the pseudo-second order model. The experimental data revealed that the Langmuir model fits better than the Freundlich and Temkin models. A decrease in adsorption capacity was observed when the catalyst dope percentage increased. A removal and degradation efficiency of the dye close to 100% was achieved around 120 min. A synergistic adsorption and photocatalytic degradation effect of the Fe-TiO2/AC and Co-TiO2/AC composites could be observed when adsorption experiments were conducted under simulated visible radiation.

Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) has been added into fuel extensively as oxygenate. Due to high water solubility, MTBE is not easy to be removed from contaminated groundwater. Common control techniques for MTBE include combustion, adsorption, biological treatment and air stripping etc. In this study, the V-doped TiO2was synthesized by modified sol-gel method and its’ photocatalytic degradation effect on MTBE irradiated under visible (λ= 419 nm) was evaluated. The crystal structure of V-doped TiO2was found mainly anatase using the X-ray diffractometer (XRD)and its size was estimated about 20 nm using field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). According to the brunauer emmett teller (BET), the surface area of doped Vanaduium on TiO2decreased due to the decrease of porodity. Comparing with the response for visible light, the V-TiO2complex had significantly efficiency of photocatalytic degradation for MTBE under visible light irradiation and the destruction removal efficiency (DRE) of photocatalytic degradation was up to 83 % for 10 ppm of MTBE under visible light irradiation. These evidences suggest that the composite V-TiO2under visible light irradiation can be widely used to treat other organic hazardous or recalcitrant pollutants in the practical contaminated groundwater.
