Cobalt–nickel oxide electrode materials with three-dimensional hexagon films or flower-shaped structures have been synthesized by a chemical precipitation method at different thermal decomposition temperatures. Nickel ions enter into the lattice of Co3O4 by forming solid solution and promote primary nanoparticles partly self-assemble into three-dimensional hexagon films which interlace with each other to form a flower-like structure. Consequently, cobalt–nickel oxide with a Ni/Co mole ratio of 1:6 at 220[Formula: see text]C displays a highest capacitance of 796.16[Formula: see text]F/g at 200[Formula: see text]mA/g and cobalt–nickel oxide with a Ni/Co mole ratio of 1:3 at 200[Formula: see text]C exhibits a highest capacitance of 290[Formula: see text]F/g at 10[Formula: see text]A/g, which significantly improve the electrochemical properties of Co3O4.

Highly linear octene isomers can be produced from n-butene on industrial scale by using Ni-containing aluminosilicates as heterogeneous catalysts. These catalysts can be prepared by impregnating an aluminosilicate with a Ni(II) salt solution. This leads to a competition between acid-catalyzed and nickel-catalyzed reactions. In this study it is shown that some octene isomers are exclusively formed via an acid-catalyzed mechanism as a result of methyl group migration at the surface of a mesoporous catalyst. Specifically, the isomers 4,4-dimethylhexene (4,4-DMH) and 3-ethyl-2-methylpentene (3E-2MP) exhibit a systematic correlation compared to the amount of 3,4-dimethylhexene (3,4-DMH) formed at acid sites. By analyzing the ratio of 4,4-DMH and/or 3E-2MP to 3,4-DMH in the product spectrum before and after impregnation with a nickel precursor, the extend of acid site covered by nickel ions can be evaluated.

Switchable catalysis offers opportunities to control the rate or selectivity of a reaction via a stimulus such as pH or light. However, few examples of switchable catalytic systems that can facilitate multiple processes exist. Here we report a rare example of such dual-functional, switchable catalysis. Featuring an easily prepared, bench-stable cobalt(I) hydride complex in conjunction with pinacolborane, we can completely alter the reaction outcome between two widely employed transformations – olefin migration and hydroboration – with visible light as the sole trigger. This dichotomy arises from ligand photodissociation which leads to metamorphosis of the active catalytic site, resulting in divergent mechanistic pathways.
