Low temperature diamagnetic shifts and FWHM linewidths of excitonic transitions in Al x Ga 1-x As alloys are reported as a function of magnetic field (50T maximum) at 4K using photoluminescence spectroscopy. Two samples with aluminum compositions of 5 and 20%, are discussed. The slope of the diamagnetic shift at high fields allows a direct measure of the excitonic reduced mass μ.

We report the study of a promising Ge -based magnetic heterojunction diode composed of a Mn -doped p - Ge film grown on lightly doped n - Ge film. Magnetic field dependent current rectification of the diode occurs at a low temperature. The measurements of resistivity and magnetoresistance in plane at low temperatures reveal the presence of impurity band in Ge due to Mn doping.

A 3 T superconducting magnet has been designed and constructed for magnetic Compton-profile (MCP) measurements with the new capabilities that the magnetic field direction can be altered quickly (within 5 s) and liquid-He refill is not required for more than one week. For the latter capability, two refrigerators have been directly attached to the cryostat to maintain the low temperature of the radiation shields and for the recondensation of liquid He. The system has been satisfactorily operated for over one week.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study of the influence of an external magnetic field on the shear flow behaviour of a magnetic fluid based on barium hexaferrite nanoplates. With the use of rheometry, the magnetoviscosity and field-dependent yield-stress in the fluid are evaluated. The observed fluid behaviour is compared to that of ferrofluids with magnetic nanoparticles having high dipole interaction. The results obtained supplement the so-far poorly studied topic of the influence of magnetic nanoparticles’ shape on magnetoviscous effects. It is concluded that the parameter determining the observed magnetoviscous effects in the fluid under study is the ratio V2/l3, where V is the volume of the nanoparticle and l is the size of the nanoparticle in the direction corresponding to its orientation in the externally applied magnetic field.
