Self-esteem and Affective Temperament of Nurses in Psychiatric and Mental Health Services

The present study was intended to explore the potential relationships between self-esteem and affective temperament (Akiskal et al., 2005) of nurses working for Psychiatric and Mental Health Departments. The ultimate goal is to establish which factor determines their professional stress and adaptation.Methods:Self-administered questionnaires were given to 152 nurses employed in three Portuguese public hospitals. The questionnaire items included socio demographic and job-related data and two scales: the Portuguese version of TEMPS-A Scale (Akiskal, 2005) and the Personal Self-esteem Scale (Ribeiro, J.L.P 2006). For statistical analysis besides descriptive statistics, a correlation model was used.Results:Hyperthimic Temperament was the more prevalent subtype. Women presented a higher Self-esteem positively correlated with Ciclothymic and Anxious temperaments. The results also show that there is a correlation between marital status and Irritable Temperament, and between the years of professional experience and the Cyclothymic and Hyperthymic Temperaments.Conclusion:An interaction between temperament subtypes, self-esteem and professional experience was observed. Gender differences are also significant. Further study is needed to investigate the potential relationship between temperament, self-esteem and professional satisfaction and resilience to job-related stress factors in Psychiatric Departments.

Abstract Background Compared to their indigenous peers, migrant children and adolescents are at increased risk for mental health problems. The aim of our study was to compare psychological disorders of children and adolescents with Turkish migration background and their native Austrian peers. Methods We analysed 302 children and adolescents aged between 7 and 18 years. The sample consisted of 100 Austrian and 100 Turkish outpatients with mental health problems, and 102 healthy controls, 52 with Austrian and 50 with Turkish background, recruited from various Viennese local child and youth centres. Results Native patients had more frequently externalizing problems (42.1%) compared to the Turkish-speaking sample (28%). However, in the control group, Turkish-speaking children and adolescents had higher levels of internalizing, depressive and anxiety symptoms compared to their native peers. Conclusions We found noticeable differences in psychological problems among children and adolescents with and without migration background. We assume that migration-related stress factors are responsible for these differences. Also, children and adolescents with migration background seek for psychological help less frequently than their indigenous peers.

Abstract Background: Job-related stress is harmful physical and emotional responses that occur when the requirements of the job don’t match the capabilities and needs of the worker. Therefore, if work isn’t properly managed, job stress can happen that leads to illness, absenteeism, high turnover, and decreased productivity that compromise provision of quality service to clients. Workers are backbones of countries development that are at risk of different occupational stresses. And, there’s no information about job-related stress among healthcare professionals and predicting factors around the study area. So, this study is aimed to assess occupational related stress and predicting factors among health care professional working in Gurage Zone public hospitals, Southern Ethiopia by August 2021. Method: Institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted to assess occupational related stress and predicting factors among health care professionals. A structured self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 345 study participants. The data was collected and analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version.23. The association between dependent and independent variables were checked by using bivariate and multivariable logistic regression. Finally, descriptive writings, tables and graphs were used to describe study variables. Result: The result showed that the prevalence of occupation (work-related) stress among healthcare professionals was 78.3%. Wards in which healthcare professionals are working, position of healthcare professionals, working hour and work shift have significant association with stress status of respondents. When compared to Medical ward, professionals working in other wards were 1.62 times more likely to have stress [AOR 1.62 (1.23, 2.13)]. Also, when compared to respondents who are working for 8 hour per day, those working more than 8 hour per day were 70 times more likely to have stress [AOR 70 (85, 582)]. Discussion and Conclusion: According to this study three out of four respondents were found to have stress among healthcare professionals. Regular trainings for healthcare professional should be needed in public hospitals to reduce stresses.

Burnout has become part of everyday vocabulary. During the time of COVID-19, burnout is no longer exclusively associated with job-related stress. Our current climate is entrenched with unprecedented levels of varying societal stressors. Particularly during this time, social workers should prioritize their own mental health. This is necessary in order to have continued success when working with others. This article proposes interventions for social workers to implement in order to combat burnout during the time of COVID-19.

Background: Physicians, especially psychiatrists, have a high risk of job-related stress, and mental impairment. In our study we examined changes in private and occupational stress factors and mental health within a decade. The legislative reduction of physicians' working hours in Germany during this period made it possible to investigate the impact of working hours in particular.Methods: Questionnaires were administered at two psychiatrist meetings (2006 and 2016) about job and family situation, depressiveness, burnout and effort-reward imbalance. A total of N = 1,797 datasets were analyzed.Results: Working hours and free weekends were associated with mental health indices. Correlation analyses showed that a reduction in weekly working hours and working days at weekends was related to reduced scores for effort-reward-imbalance, burnout and depression.Conclusions: Our data show changes in workplace stress and mental health in psychiatrists in a decade in which a reduction in working hours has been required by law. These results can provide indications of effective prevention strategies in the professional context of physicians working in psychiatry.

There is an increasing trend of mental health issues in Malaysia. 1 in 3 Malaysian aged over 16 years old is at risk of having a mental health problem, and the trend is on the rise. The burden of mental health disorders on health and productivity, however, has long been underestimated. It is partly due to the cultural stigma attached to mental disorders. The recent 2018 Malaysia's Healthiest Workplace survey reported that more than half of employees in the survey have been affected by job-related stress such as burnout, anxiety, depression, and could lead to suicide. The serious consequences of these mental health issues not only affecting the individual but also lead to negative impacts on the productivity and performance of the company. On the other hand, workplaces that promote good mental health, and support people with mental disorders are more likely to reduce absenteeism, increase productivity as well as could benefit from associated economic gains. It is crucial for the workplace to integrate mental health intervention in their health and wellbeing strategy.  Among the useful intervention is mindfulness training. Mindfulness is not only proven to reduce the work stress but also teaches the employees to appreciate life and positively cope with their job demands. This presentation outlines the benefits of mindfulness and how it can be applied in daily life.

Since seafarers are known to be exposed to numerous job-related stress factors that can cause fatigue, sleepiness, and disturbed sleep behaviour, the aim of this review was to provide an overview of the subjective and objective measurement methods of these strains. Using a systematic review, 166 studies were identified within the period of January 2010 to December 2020 using the PubMed database. Of the 21 studies selected, 13 used both subjective and objective measurement methods. Six studies used only subjective and two studies only objective methods. For subjective assessment, 12 different questionnaires could be identified as well as activity and sleeping logs. Actigraphy and reaction time tests (RTT) were the most common objective methods. In single cases, electrooculography (EOG), pupillometry and ambulatory polysomnography (PSG) were used. Measurement-related limitations due to vessel-related impacts were less often reported than expected. No restrictions of daily routines on board were described, and only single-measurement disturbances due to ship movements were mentioned. The present literature review reveals that there are various routines to measure fatigue, sleepiness, and sleep behaviour on board. A combination of subjective and objective methods often appears to be beneficial. The frequent use of actigraphy and RTT on board suggests good feasibility and reliable measurements with these methods. The use of ambulatory PSG in maritime-like contexts suggests that this method would also be feasible on board.
