AbstractThe concepts of high-velocity, complexity and interdependency are nowadays vividly discussed in design-led innovation management. Design organisations seek to manage innovation in a more dynamic way to ensure competitive advantage and long-term competitiveness. Contextual ambidexterity is advised to be a dynamic capability that can facilitate firms to effectively manage incremental and radical innovation alike. This paper proposes an approach that focuses on the individual and the underlying thinking which bases its foundations on ambidextrous leadership, abductive reasoning and strategic fit.

Dynamic capability is a theory of competitive advantage in rapidly changing environments. We reconcile this explanation with previous theories of competitive advantage, showing how it informs and complements explanations based on market positions, firm resources, and Schumpeterian creative destruction. We examine the scope conditions of dynamic capability; that is, when the theory has more and less explanatory power. We find that dynamic capability has greatest explanatory power when a partially foreseeable technological change is on the verge of transforming market competition; and less explanatory power when dynamic capabilities are not undervalued or scarce; when change is unforeseeable; when change is easily foreseeable; when the effect size of new capabilities is small; in industries subject to repeated technological shifts; and in markets that reward short bursts of extraordinary performance over long-term persistence. We discuss these scope conditions and show how dynamic capability combines with prior theories to explain competitive advantage in different industry contexts.

This chapter focuses on the development of the Knowledge Management (KM) platform, and, more generally, the knowledge- and resource based view (RBV) of the firm. The knowledge is seen as a source of a competitive advantage. In high-velocity markets, like the ICT-sector, the knowledge is crucial in creating a long-term competitive advantage over the competitors. The study claims that corporate performance was improved when the case company simultaneously exploited a balanced set of related knowledge resources of the corporate KM Platfrom across its business areas.

<p class="0abstract"><span lang="EN-US">N</span><span class="Ninguno"><span lang="EN-US">ew technologies are changing our society bringing both great opportunities and enormous risks; therefore it is of paramount importance to understand how to cope with the ongoing digital transformation and how to manage the innovation it brings in all sectors and at all levels. The ability to innovate is a crucial factor for long-term corporate success. Everybody agrees on the importance to bring innovation within companies and organizations but there is little consensus on how to do it. Over the last years, a strong debate has raised on the identification of innovation manager’s tasks and duties and, above all, on the background and skills that this new professional profile should possess in order to effectively manage innovation. Very often, the innovation manager is seen as someone mostly resembling to a R&amp;D or an IT Manager. Nevertheless, innovation is not only technology-led but encompasses a broader variety of aspects. This suggests that a different and more comprehensive background should be considered when codifying the innovation manager profile. This paper intends to identify this background by showing the strict correlation between project management and innovation management with the aim to emphasize why project management should represent the proper competency and experiential framework for innovation managers.</span></span></p>

Summary The underlying assumption of the article is that imitation is as important as innovation when creating a long-term competitive advantage, and that a systematic, strategic approach to imitation is necessary to ensure efficient and effective innovation. Viewed in this light, imitation is a rare and complex dynamic capability which organisations should properly develop and skillfully use. Imitators provide customers with products that are both better and cheaper. This article contributes to a discussion of innovative processes and their role in shaping dynamic capabilities of organisations. It attempts to portray the essence and nature of imitation and identifies benefits which copying what other organisations do can bring in terms of dynamic capabilities.

The central argument of this book is that voting unity in European legislatures is not primarily the result of the ‘disciplining’ power of the leadership of parliamentary parties, but rather the result of a combination of ideological homogeneity through self-selection into political parties and the calculations of individual legislators about their own long-term benefits. Despite the central role of policy preferences in the subsequent behaviour of legislators, preferences at the level of the individual legislator have been almost entirely neglected in the study of parliaments and legislative behaviour. The book measures these using an until now under-utilized resource: parliamentary surveys. Building on these, the book develops measures of policy incentives of legislators to dissent from their parliamentary parties, and show that preference similarity amongst legislators explains a very substantial proportion of party unity, yet alone cannot explain all of it. Analysing the attitudes of legislators to the demands of party unity, and what drives these attitudes, the book argues that what explains the observed unity (beyond what preference similarity would explain) is the conscious acceptance by MPs that the long-term benefits of belonging to a united party (such as increased influence on legislation, lower transaction costs, and better chances of gaining office) outweigh the short-terms benefits of always voting for their ideal policy outcome. The book buttresses this argument through the analysis of both open-ended survey questions as well as survey questions on the costs and benefits of belonging to a political party in a legislature.

The case is structured around the takeover of Mindtree Ltd (ML) by Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) in June 2019. ML was founded and nurtured by a group of software professionals. In two decades, it had blossomed into an enterprise with global presence, US$ 1 billion turnover and a unique organizational culture. In a strange sequence of events, more than 20% of ML’s shares landed in L&T’s lap. L&T grabbed this opportunity and ran a systematic campaign to acquire the company. In about 100 days, L&T achieved its objective and got into the driver’s seat. The case traces the evolution of ML from a start-up to a publicly held company with global standing. It examines the circumstances and events leading to L&T getting the initial stake in the company; it examines the acquisition campaign of L&T and the response of the top management of ML. Research Questions Was there a strategic fit between ML and L&T? Were the capital market processes just and fair to all the stakeholders involved in the acquisition? Was L&T fair, prudent and sensitive in the acquisition process? Was Siddhartha loyal and fair to the founders of ML? Link to Theory The theoretical concepts that would enable a better comprehension of the case are: Analysis of strategic fit in M&A situations Capital market: Theory and practice Strategy for corporate control of an enterprise Significance of culture and ecosystem in knowledge organizations Phenomenon Studied Leadership styles relevant at different stages of evolution of an enterprise are different. A leader, at a given point of time, is successful when he is able to match his aspirations with the leadership needs of the enterprise at that point of time. The case can be used to demonstrate this phenomenon. Case Context Context of the case is that of an emerging infotech enterprise, coming under corporate raid and the unfolding capital market processes. The case highlights the shortcomings of the co-founders, leading to their unseating as also the sensitivity of the incoming management in handling the transition. Findings The case demonstrates the ability of the capital market to be fair to all stakeholders ensuring reward for competence and punishment for sloppiness. The case emphasizes the need for co-founders to have an effective strategy for corporate control; only then they could hope to achieve the long-term objectives. The case also illustrates the significance of sensitivity in handling softer issues like people and ecosystem in ensuring long-term success. Discussions At the outset, the case may appear to be that of a big fish swallowing a small fish. But a closer scrutiny would reveal the multiple dimensions of the case. Consider the role of Siddhartha. He seeded the idea of the company; he was a financier to it; he remained an investor in the company longer than most of the founders; when he pulled out, the co-founders could not hold the company together. Neither Siddhartha nor the co-founders had the far-sightedness to consolidate their shareholdings for effective control of the company into the future. This would trigger discussions on the differing roles of technocrats, managers, leaders and founders. Another point worthy of discussion would be: How were the co-founders choosing their leaders? Was it by rotation among themselves, or did they engage a set of criteria to identify an incumbent capable of leading a global company?

Abstract The recent reauthorization of the Older Americans Act adds language and definitions to current issues facing the aging population. Specifically, Title I includes definitions related to program adaptation and coordination, workforce and long-term care issues, nutrition and social isolation, as well as family caregivers. Different from the last authorization, these definitions span beyond the individual experience to include other entities impacted by an aging society, such as the workforce and families. Overall, the Title I reauthorization seeks to modernize policy to reflect the current influx of the older adult population and its consequences.

Introduction Adults with spinal cord injuries are living longer than previously, and a majority are living in ordinary housing in the community. Housing accessibility is important for maintaining independent occupational performance for this population, but knowledge in this area is insufficient. We investigated housing adaptations and current accessibility problems among older adults with long-standing (>10 years) spinal cord injuries. Method Data from home visits among 122 older adults with spinal cord injuries in Sweden were used. Housing adaptations and environmental barriers were descriptively analysed. Findings Kitchens, entrances, and hygiene areas were common locations for housing adaptations and environmental barriers that generated accessibility problems. The most common adaptations were ramps, wheelchair-accessible stovetops, and ceiling-lifts. Wall-mounted cupboards and high shelves (kitchen), inaccessible storage areas (outside the dwelling), and a lack of grab bars (hygiene area) generated the most accessibility problems. Conclusion Despite housing adaptations, there are considerable accessibility problems in the dwellings of older adults with long-standing spinal cord injuries in Sweden, indicating that long-term follow-up of the housing situation of this population is necessary. Focusing on accessible housing as a prerequisite for occupational performance is at the core of occupational therapy, deserving attention on the individual as well as the societal level.

Severe periodontitis is prevalent in Down syndrome (DS). This study aimed to identify genetic variations associated with periodontitis in individuals with DS. The study group was distributed into DS patients with periodontitis (n = 50) and DS patients with healthy periodontium (n = 36). All samples were genotyped with the “Axiom Spanish Biobank” array, which contains 757,836 markers. An association analysis at the individual marker level using logistic regression, as well as at the gene level applying the sequence kernel association test (SKAT) was performed. The most significant genes were included in a pathway analysis using the free DAVID software. C12orf74 (rs4315121, p = 9.85 × 10−05, OR = 8.84), LOC101930064 (rs4814890, p = 9.61 × 10−05, OR = 0.13), KBTBD12 (rs1549874, p = 8.27 × 10−05, OR = 0.08), PIWIL1 (rs11060842, p = 7.82 × 10−05, OR = 9.05) and C16orf82 (rs62030877, p = 8.92 × 10−05, OR = 0.14) showed a higher probability in the individual analysis. The analysis at the gene level highlighted PIWIL, MIR9-2, LHCGR, TPR and BCR. At the signaling pathway level, PI3K-Akt, long-term depression and FoxO achieved nominal significance (p = 1.3 × 10−02, p = 5.1 × 10−03, p = 1.2 × 10−02, respectively). In summary, various metabolic pathways are involved in the pathogenesis of periodontitis in DS, including PI3K-Akt, which regulates cell proliferation and inflammatory response.
