Secondary instability analysis of crossflow on a hypersonic yawed straight circular cone

The purpose of this paper is to provide secondary instability analysis of stationary crossflow vortices on a hypersonic yawed straight circular cone with a $7^{\circ }$ half-angle at $6^{\circ }$ angle of attack, free-stream Mach number 6 and unit Reynolds number $10.09\times 10^{6}~\text{m}^{-1}$. At an angle of attack, a three-dimensional boundary layer is developed between the windward and leeward symmetry planes. Under the action of azimuthal pressure gradients, the flow near the surface is deflected more than the flow near the edge of the boundary layer. This results in an inflectional velocity profile that can sustain the growth of crossflow vortices. The stationary crossflow instability is computed by means of the nonlinear parabolized stability equations, including a methodology to predict the stationary-crossflow marching path and variation of the spanwise number of waves in the marching direction solely from the basic state. Secondary instability analysis is performed using spatial BiGlobal equations based on two-dimensional partial differential equations. The secondary instabilities are calculated at different axial locations along two crossflow vortex trajectories selected to complement experiments conducted in the Mach 6 Quiet Tunnel at Texas A&M University and in the Boeing/AFOSR Mach 6 Quiet Tunnel at Purdue University. The secondary instability analysis captures various instability modes. Similar to observations in the low-speed regime for an infinite swept wing, secondary shear-layer instabilities are amplified as a consequence of the three-dimensional shear layer formed by crossflow vortices. Also, low-frequency travelling crossflow and high-frequency second modes coexist with the shear-layer instabilities. These results are shown to be in good agreement with the two sets of hypersonic yawed cone experiments (one with natural surface roughness and one with artificial discrete roughness) and compare well with experimental measurements of an incompressible swept wing.

Crossflow instability of a three-dimensional boundary layer is a common cause of transition in swept-wing flows. The boundary-layer flow modified by the presence of finite-amplitude crossflow modes is susceptible to high-frequency secondary instabilities, which are believed to harbinger the onset of transition. The role of secondary instability in transition prediction is theoretically examined for the recent swept-wing experimental data by Reibert et al. (1996). Exploiting the experimental observation that the underlying three-dimensional boundary layer is convectively unstable, non-linear parabolized stability equations are used to compute a new basic state for the secondary instability analysis based on a two-dimensional eigenvalue approach. The predicted evolution of stationary crossflow vortices is in close agreement with the experimental data. The suppression of naturally dominant crossflow modes by artificial roughness distribution at a subcritical spacing is also confirmed. The analysis reveals a number of secondary instability modes belonging to two basic families which, in some sense, are akin to the ‘horseshoe’ and ‘sinuous’ modes of the Görtler vortex problem. The frequency range of the secondary instability is consistent with that measured in earlier experiments by Kohama et al. (1991), as is the overall growth of the secondary instability mode prior to the onset of transition (e.g. Kohama et al. 1996). Results indicate that the N-factor correlation based on secondary instability growth rates may yield a more robust criterion for transition onset prediction in comparison with an absolute amplitude criterion that is based on primary instability alone.

Nonlinear stability of a model swept-wing boundary layer, subject to crossflow instability, is investigated by numerically solving the governing partial differential equations. The three-dimensional boundary layer is unstable to both stationary and travelling crossflow disturbances. Nonlinear calculations have been carried out for stationary vortices and the computed wall vorticity pattern results in streamwise streaks which resemble quite well the surface oil-flow visualizations in swept-wing experiments. Other features of the stationary vortex development (half-mushroom structure, inflected velocity profiles, vortex doubling, etc.) are also captured in these calculations. Nonlinear interaction of the stationary and travelling waves is also studied. When initial amplitude of the stationary vortex is larger than the travelling mode, the stationary vortex dominates most of the downstream development. When the two modes have the same initial amplitude, the travelling mode dominates the downstream development owing to its higher growth rate. It is also found that, prior to laminar/turbulent transition, the three-dimensional boundary layer is subject to a high-frequency secondary instability, which is in agreement with the experiments of Poll (1985) and Kohama, Saric & Hoos (1991). The frequency of this secondary instability, which resides on top of the stationary crossflow vortex, is an order of magnitude higher than the frequency of the most-amplified travelling crossflow mode.

Steady laminar flow over a rounded-tip $2\,:\,1$ elliptic cone of 0.86 m length at zero angle of attack and yaw has been computed at Mach number $7.45$ and unit Reynolds number $Re^{\prime }=1.015\times 10^{7}~\text{m}^{-1}$. The flow conditions are selected to match the planned flight of the Hypersonic Flight Research Experimentation HIFiRE-5 test geometry at an altitude of 21.8 km. Spatial linear BiGlobal modal instability analysis of this flow has been performed at selected streamwise locations on planes normal to the cone symmetry axis, resolving the entire flow domain in a coupled manner while exploiting flow symmetries. Four amplified classes of linear eigenmodes have been unravelled. The shear layer formed near the cone minor-axis centreline gives rise to amplified symmetric and antisymmetric centreline instability modes, classified as shear-layer instabilities. At the attachment line formed along the major axis of the cone, both symmetric and antisymmetric instabilities are also discovered and identified as boundary-layer second Mack modes. In both cases of centreline and attachment-line modes, symmetric instabilities are found to be more unstable than their antisymmetric counterparts. Furthermore, spatial BiGlobal analysis is used for the first time to resolve oblique second modes and cross-flow instabilities in the boundary layer between the major- and minor-axis meridians. Contrary to predictions for the incompressible regime for swept infinite wing flow, the cross-flow instabilities are not found to be linked to the attachment-line instabilities. In fact, cross-flow modes peak along most of the surface of the cone, but vanish towards the attachment line. On the other hand, the leading oblique second modes peak near the leading edge and their associated frequencies are in the range of the attachment-line instability frequencies. Consequently, the attachment-line instabilities are observed to be related to oblique second modes at the major-axis meridian. The linear amplification of centreline and attachment-line instability modes is found to be strong enough to lead to laminar–turbulent flow transition within the length of the test object. The predictions of global linear theory are compared with those of local instability analysis, also performed here under the assumption of locally parallel flow, where use of this assumption is permissible. Fair agreement is obtained for symmetric centreline and symmetric attachment-line modes, while for all other classes of linear disturbances use of the proposed global analysis methodology is warranted for accurate linear instability predictions.

An experimental investigation of primary and secondary crossflow instability developing in the boundary layer of a $45^{\circ }$ swept wing at a chord Reynolds number of $2.17\times 10^{6}$ is presented. Linear stability theory is applied for preliminary estimation of the flow stability while surface flow visualisation using fluorescent oil is employed to inspect the topological features of the transition region. Hot-wire anemometry is extensively used for the investigation of the developing boundary layer and identification of the statistical and spectral characteristics of the instability modes. Primary stationary, as well as unsteady type-I (z-mode), type-II (y-mode) and type-III modes are detected and quantified. Finally, three-component, three-dimensional measurements of the transitional boundary layer are performed using tomographic particle image velocimetry. This research presents the first application of an optical experimental technique for this type of flow. Among the optical techniques, tomographic velocimetry represents, to date, the most advanced approach allowing the investigation of spatially correlated flow structures in three-dimensional fields. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis of the captured flow fields is applied to this goal. The first POD mode features a newly reported structure related to low-frequency oscillatory motion of the stationary vortices along the spanwise direction. The cause of this phenomenon is only conjectured. Its effect on transition is considered negligible but, given the related high energy level, it needs to be accounted for in experimental investigations. Secondary instability mechanisms are captured as well. The type-III mode corresponds to low-frequency primary travelling crossflow waves interacting with the stationary ones. It appears in the inner upwelling region of the stationary crossflow vortices and is characterised by elongated structures approximately aligned with the axis of the stationary waves. The type-I secondary instability consists instead of significantly inclined structures located at the outer upwelling region of the stationary vortices. The much narrower wavelength and higher advection velocity of these structures correlate with the higher-frequency content of this mode. The results of the investigation of both primary and secondary instability from the exploited techniques agree with and complement each other and are in line with existing literature. Finally, they present the first experimental observation of the secondary instability structures under natural flow conditions.

The near wake of a blunt-base cylinder at 10° angle-of-attack to a Mach 2.46 free-stream flow is visualized at several locations to study unsteady aspects of its structure. In both side-view and end-view images, the shear layer flapping grows monotonically as the shear layer develops, similar to the trends seen in a corresponding axisymmetric supersonic base flow. The interface convolution, a measure of the tortuousness of the shear layer, peaks for side-view and end-view images during recompression. The high convolution for a septum of fluid seen in the middle of the wake indicates that the septum actively entrains fluid from the recirculation region, which helps to explain the low base pressure for this wake compared to that for a corresponding axisymmetric wake.

Theoretical and an experimental research results of the disturbances development in a swept wing boundary layer are presented at Mach number М = 2. In experiments development of natural and small amplitude controllable disturbances downstream was studied. Experiments were carried out on a swept wing model with a lenticular profile at a zero attack angle. The swept angle of a leading edge was 40°. Wave parameters of moving disturbances were determined. In frames of the linear theory and an approach of the local self-similar mean flow the stability of a compressible three-dimensional boundary layer is studied. Good agreement of the theory with experimental results for transversal scales of unstable vertices of the secondary flow was obtained. However the calculated amplification rates differ from measured values considerably. This disagreement is explained by the nonlinear processes observed in experiment

Measurements of fluctuating pressure and velocity, together with instantaneous smoke-flow visualizations, are presented in order to reveal the unsteady structure of a separated and reattaching flow. It is shown that throughout the separation bubble a low-frequency motion can be detected which appears to be similar to that found in other studies of separation. This effect is most significant close to separation, where it leads to a weak flapping of the shear layer. Lateral correlation scales of this low-frequency motion are less than the reattachment length, however; it appears that its timescale is about equal to the characteristic timescale for the shear layer and bubble to change between various shedding phases. These phases were defined by the following observations: shedding of pseudoperiodic trains of vortical structures from the reattachment zone, with a characteristic spacing between structures of typically 60% to 80% of the bubble length; a large-scale but irregular shedding of vorticity; and a relatively quiescent phase with the absence of any large-scale shedding structures and a significant ‘necking’ of the shear layer downstream of reattachment.Spanwise correlations of velocity in the shear layer show on average an almost linear growth of spanwise scale up to reattachment. It appears that the shear layer reaches a fully three-dimensional state soon after separation. The reattachment process does not itself appear to impose an immediate extra three-dimensionalizing effect upon the large-scale structures.

The paper is devoted to an experimental and theoretical study of effect of moderate angle-of-attack variation on disturbances evolution and laminar-turbulent transition in a supersonic boundary layer on swept wing at Mach 2. Monotonous growth of the transition Reynolds numbers with angle of attack increasing from −2° to 2.7° is confirmed. For the same conditions, calculations based on linear stability theory are performed. The experimental and computational results show a favourable comparison.
