Abstract Children with cerebral palsy (CP) typically suffer from congenital deformities, such as scoliosis and contractures, therefore, it is a challenge to measure the stature of CP children. Studies have suggested that predictive equations based on tibia length (TL) may be used as an alternative method in measuring the actual height or stature. The present study aimed to develop and validate predictive equations based on TL for CP children in Malaysia across all five levels of gross motor functions (GMFCS I to V) through a cross-sectional study. All subjects were recruited from Hospitals and Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) in the central and southern regions of Malaysia. Two predictive equation models were developed using multiple linear regression. For Model 1, the predictive equation was developed based on TL. On the other hand, Model 2 was developed based on TL with age was included. A flexible Seca measuring tape was used to measure the stature and TL. CP children aged 2–18 years were classified into the equation development group (EDG), n 177 and the validation group (VG), n 139. Model 1, Height = 32⋅3 + 3⋅14 (TL), demonstrated a strong correlation with the actual height (R2 0⋅834), small SEE (1⋅42), and high intra correlation coefficient (0⋅929). The findings suggested that Model 1 was more accurate in estimating the height of CP children aged 2–18 years. This model was shown to suit the Malaysian population and applicable across all GMFCS levels.

Leisure participation contributes to the health and wellbeing of children with and without physical disabilities. In the present cross-sectional study, we aimed to assess the influence of child and family factors on leisure activity participation of children with cerebral palsy (CP) aged 8-18 years. A convenience sample of 69 participants with CP (M age = 12.75 years, SD = 2.95; 45 males) responded to the Children’s Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment questionnaire to report participation diversity, frequency, companies, environment and enjoyment in leisure activities. From these questionnaires, we used descriptive statistics to summarize overall participation, two activity domains (formal and informal) and five activity types (recreational, social, active physical, skill-based, and self-improvement). Regression analysis assessed child and family factors’ influence on participation. On average, children with CP were involved in 21 leisure activities in the last four months. Within activity types, social and recreational activities were the most frequently reported. Participation in physical and skill-based activities was low. Overall children with CP experienced high enjoyment with engagement in leisure activities. Collectively, factors of age, cognitive function, gross motor function, and mother’s education level predicted 33% of activity diversity and 30% of activity frequency. We concluded that children with CP show diverse leisure activity participation and high leisure activity enjoyment. Health, education and sports professionals should consider the child’s functional profile and family context when promoting participation.

Background/Aims Caring for children with cerebral palsy may affect different domains in the caregiver's life. This study aimed to compare the occupational performance of mothers of a child who has cerebral palsy with mothers of a typically developing child. Methods A total of 41 mothers with a child who has cerebral palsy and 45 mothers with a typically developing child were recruited in this cross-sectional study. The age-matched mothers had only one child. The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure was used to collect data on the occupational performance and satisfaction of mothers. Findings There was a statistically significant between-group difference in maternal occupational performance and occupational satisfaction (P<0.05), with mothers of children with cerebral palsy reporting lower scores for both. There were no relationships between demographic variables and the occupational performance and satisfaction of mothers with a child with cerebral palsy (P>0.05). The age of children with cerebral palsy had a direct positive relationship with the mothers' level of occupational satisfaction (P<0.05). Conclusion Mothers who take care of a child with cerebral palsy face significant reductions in occupational performance and satisfaction compared to mothers with a typically developing child, and therefore may need help and education in performing and organising their daily activities and roles.

Abstract Background Children with cerebral palsy (CP) frequently experience chronic pain. The burden and severity of such pain is often underestimated in relation to their other impairments. Recognition and awareness of this chronic pain among children with CP constitute the cornerstone for caretakers and clinicians to improve the quality of life of those children. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of chronic pain among children with CP, and the factors associated. Methods A cross-sectional study of children with CP, aged 2–12 years, attending the CP rehabilitation clinic and Pediatric Neurology Clinic at Mulago Hospital, Uganda from November 2017 to May 2018. A detailed history and clinical examination were performed and the co-morbidities were determined. CP was classified using the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS), Manual Ability Classification System, Communication Function Classification System (CFCS), and the Eating and Drinking Ability Classification System (EDACS) and documented with the level of impairment in the different domains. Pain was assessed by using the revised Face, Legs, Activity, Consolability, Cry pain scale. Results A total of 224 children with CP were enrolled. The prevalence of chronic pain was 64.3%. The majority had spastic bilateral CP (77.8%), moderate pain lasting over 6 months, and none of them was on long-term pain management. Epilepsy (60.9%), behavioral problem (63.2%), hearing impairment (66,7%), learning problem (67,6%), dental caries (75%), gastro-esophageal reflux (75%), sleep disorders (79.5%), vision impairment (80%), and malnutrition (90%) were co- morbid conditions of chronic pain in children with CP in this study. The factors independently associated with chronic pain among children with CP were the GMFCS level IV & V, CFCS level IV & V, EDACS level IV & V, female children, and caretaker aged more than 30 years. Conclusions Two-thirds of children with CP attending rehabilitation in this hospital had chronic pain. None was receiving pain management. Chronic pain was associated with the presence of multiple co-morbidities and more severe disability. Rehabilitation and care programs for children with CP should include assessment of pain in routine care and provide interventions for pain relief in children with CP even at an early age.
