Promoting high culture: The evolution of the Brisbane Musical Union, 1872–98

AbstractThis article analyses the musical work of the Brisbane Musical Union (BMU) between its founding in 1872 and the consolidation of its position by 1898. During this period, the BMU benefited from the dedicated leadership of its main conductor, R. T. Jefferies, who drew upon his high standing as a violinist, ensemble player and conductor in Brisbane to present regular choral concerts, mainly comprising oratorios, with an amateur choir. Despite financial challenges, difficulties over rehearsal and concert venues, periodic problems concerning the choice of repertoire, an insufficient number of available professional musicians and competition from rival local musical societies, Jefferies’ work with the BMU promoted an important aspect of high musical culture to the public and laid the foundations for further development of classical musical performance in Brisbane.

Early in 1904 the American modern dancer Isadora Duncan, already notorious for her barefoot “Greek dancing” to concert music not intended for the stage, created a scandal in Germany by presenting a program of dances to Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. Critics and composers responded in music journals and the daily press with a vigorous denunciation of Duncan’s trespass into the inner circle of German musical culture. What most disturbed Duncan’s critics, however, was the success of her Beethoven program with the public. Concern over Duncan’s hold on German audiences reveals the anxieties of professional musicians and critics whose status in Germany was also threatened by the popularity of music and dance entertainments in vaudeville and cabaret theater. Together with a musical parody of Duncan by Oscar Straus and a venomous attack by Max Reger, hostile reviews of Duncan illuminate serious musicians’ increasingly tenuous hold on the musical tastes of modern Bildungsbürger audiences.

Women had to rethink and rebuild themselves during the Reconstruction, a period when ideas of gender and class were in flux, and professionals challenged antebellum strictures about the public gaze by embracing career women and musical directors. Reconstructed spaces allowed for new realizations of gentility, and the networks of meanings surrounding musical performance evoked power in ways hitherto unavailable to women. At Fisk University, Ella Sheppard and other women of color crafted careers as professional musicians, on the stage or in their own communities. Women began to perform Beethoven’s works in public, and this shift coincided with striking alterations in southern society that are best explained by new ideas of what they could and should do after the war.

The profound changes within the Albanian society, including Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia, before and after they proclaimed independence (in exception of Albania), with the establishment of the parliamentary system resulted in mass spread social negative consequences such as crime, drugs, prostitution, child beggars on the street etc. As a result of these occurred circumstances emerged a substantial need for changes within the legal system in order to meet and achieve the European standards or behaviors and the need for adoption of many laws imported from abroad, but without actually reading the factual situation of the psycho-economic position of the citizens and the consequences of the peoples’ occupations without proper compensation, as a remedy for the victims of war or peace in these countries. The sad truth is that the perpetrators not only weren’t sanctioned, but these regions remained an untouched haven for further development of criminal activities, be it from the public state officials through property privatization or in the private field. The organized crime groups, almost in all cases, are perceived by the human mind as “Mafia” and it is a fact that this cannot be denied easily. The widely spread term “Mafia” is mostly known around the world to define criminal organizations.The Balkan Peninsula is highly involved in these illegal groups of organized crime whose practice of criminal activities is largely extended through the Balkan countries such as Kosovo, Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Montenegro, etc. Many factors contributed to these strategic countries to be part of these types of activities. In general, some of the countries have been affected more specifically, but in all of the abovementioned countries organized crime has affected all areas of life, leaving a black mark in the history of these states.

As is described in this conclusion, more than the media and culture, Madrid’s public space constituted the primary arena where reactions and attitudes toward social conflict and inequalities were negotiated. Social conflict in the public space found expression through musical performance, as well as through the rise of noise that came with the expansion and modernization of the city. Through their impact on public health and morality, noise and unwelcomed musical practices contributed to the refinement of Madrid’s city code and the modernization of society. The interference of vested political interests, however, made the refining of legislation in these areas particularly difficult. Analysis of three musical practices, namely, flamenco, organilleros, and workhouse bands, has shown how difficult it was to adopt consistent policies and approaches to tackling the forms of social conflict that were associated with musical performance.

We are often told that there is to-day a promising efflorescence of musical culture in this country; that the public for ‘good’ music is growing rapidly; and that more adequate provision must be made for music in the post-war reconstructed world. Substantially I believe all this is true; but it does also seem to me that much potential cultural vitality may be wasted if these conclusions are accepted too easily, without enquiry into the premisses on which they are based. What do we mean by musical culture? What do we expect music to give us? The mere quantity of music played tells us nothing; we want to know what kind of relation the noise has to the society that produces it, we want to know what bearing it has on the way people live. If we look back a moment to consider some of the things that music has meant to people living before us, we shall soon see that our problems are peculiarly difficult, and that we may well need a virtually new technique to deal with them. A refusal to see our educational problems against the background of history will lead to confusion and incompetence in musical culture as in everything else.

Urgency of the research. Ensuring the proper level of controllability of procurement contributes to effective action of legislated procedures of financial control, and increases the level of responsibility of participants of the public procurement process. Target setting. Putting forward the provisions of international standards ISSAI, which provide for the implementation of results of financial control in society, is the relevant issue of increasing the effectiveness of control measures. Actual scientific researches and issues analysis. Evolution of the views of scientists on the tasks of financial control in the field of procurement creates the framework for its further development in terms of increasing effectiveness. Uninvestigated parts of general matters defining. The study of the instruments for control actions to assess the implementation of the principle of responsibility in the field of procurement requires theoretical and practical justification. The research objective. The article aims to develop instruments for financial control of public procurement in order to implement the principle of responsibility in this area in accordance with the international standards of financial control ISSAI. The statement of basic materials. On the basis of the implementation of the ISSAI standards, the instruments for control actions to verify compliance with the principle of responsibility under the public procurement is proposed. Assessment of compliance with procurement criteria will provide evidence for substantiated findings and the effectiveness of control measures. Conclusions. As a result of the study, it was concluded that the combination of ISSAI norms and public procurement criteria at the level of financial control instruments will ensure its effectiveness.

Abstract Present day art phenomena that surround us from all media channels compel us, who have been educated as professional musicians, to find justifications for the sonic abuse that contemporary society is subjected to and to resuscitate, within this vitiated context, the art music meant to re-educate our people, restoring them to the conscience and value of their identity. Educating the public and bringing them closer to contemporary art is a task meant to be fulfilled by music institutions as well, since they should seek to investigate efficient methods of generating connecting bridges to the large masses by transforming music into a shared cultural commodity.

The research “Econometric Methodology of Monopolization Process Evaluation” gives a perspective description of monopolization process’ nature, occurrence source, development procedure and internal conjuncture specifics, as well as providing an example of modern econometrical method application within a unified framework of market competition analysis for the purpose of conducting a quantitative competition evaluation on an industry level for practical use in both private and public sectors. The main question of the aforementioned research is the definition and quantitative analysis of monopolization effects in modern day globalized markets, while constructing an empirical model of the econometric analysis, based on the use of international historical experience of monopoly formations standings, with the goal of introducing a further development scheme for the use of both econometrical and statistical instruments in line with the forecasting and business research need of enterprises and regulatory functions of the public sector. The current research uses a vast variety of monopolization evaluation ratios and their econometrical updates on companies that are involved in the study procedure in order to detect and scallar measure their market monopolizing potential, based on the implemented acquired market positions, turnover shares and competition policies.

Abstract. Social media has become a tool that links almost all aspects of human life, from the technology of information to the cultural segment where archaeology is part of it. For more than two decades, social media not only has become an informal place to encounter and exchange of ideas but also holds important role to share about archeological knowledge to the public in Maluku. This paper attempts to observe the correlation between archaeology and social media to support the effort of expanding the archaological knowledge and cultural history in Maluku. The method used in this research is literature study. The results of the study indicates that social media has become one of the main agents in the publication of archaeological knowledge in Maluku and is very prospective for further development. Media sosial telah menjadi wahana yang bertautan dengan hampir seluruh aspek kehidupan manusia saat ini mulai dari ranah teknologi informasi hingga segmen kebudayaan, termasuk di dalamnya disiplin arkeologi. Sudah lebih dari dua dekade media sosial tidak saja menjadi ruang informal perjumpaan dan pertukaran gagasan, tetapi telah menjelma menjadi motor efektif yang turut menggerakkan dinamika akademis disiplin arkeologi, termasuk menjadi agen bagi interaksi arkeologi dan masyarakat. Media sosial berperan sebagai salah satu ruang paling efektif dalam meluaskan pengetahuan arkeologi bagi publik juga masuk di Maluku. Makalah ini mencoba mengamati hubungan disiplin arkeologi dan media sosial bagi perluasan pengetahuan arkeologi dan sejarah budaya untuk masyarakat di Maluku. Metode yang digunakan adalah kajian pustaka. Hasil studi menemukan bahwa media sosial telah menjadi salah satu agen utama dalam publikasi pengetahuan arkeologi di Maluku dan prospektif untuk terus dikembangkan ke depan.Kata kunci: Arkeologi, publik, media sosial, Maluku
