SummaryThis paper describes rig tests made to evaluate the effectiveness of the cockpit insulation and cooling system of a high-speed aircraft.The tests showed the dependence of cockpit internal temperature distribution and heat pick-up on the cooling air mass flow and inlet temperature. Analysis of the test data showed that there was considerable heat leakage into the cockpit; the heat leakage increased with cooling air flow and constituted two-thirds of the heat entering the cockpit when the air flow was moderately high (20 lb/min). Some of the leakage heat entered the cockpit through equipment mountings but it was evident that other leakage paths existed. One more obvious heat leakage path, at the canopy, is illustrated.The tests also showed that the internal heat transfer coefficient increased with air flow, reaching a value of 2·5 C.H.U./hr ft2°C when the flow was 20 lb/min.

The foil bearing (FB) is one type of hydrodynamic bearing using air or another gas as a lubricant. When FBs are designed, installed, and operated properly, they are a very cost-effective and reliable solution for oil-free turbomachinery. Because there is no mechanical contact between the rotor and its bearings, quiet operation with very low friction is possible once the rotor lifts off the bearings. However, because of the high speed of operation, thermal management is a very important design factor to consider. The most widely accepted cooling method for FBs is axial flow cooling, which uses cooling air or gas passing through heat-exchange channels formed underneath the top foil. The advantage of axial cooling is that no hardware modification is necessary to implement it, because the elastic foundation structures of the FB serve as the heat-exchange channels. Its disadvantage is that an axial temperature gradient exists on the journal shaft and bearing. In this paper, the cooling characteristics of axial cooling are compared with those of multipoint radial injection, which uses high-speed injection of cooling air onto the shaft at multiple locations. Experiments were performed on a three-pad FB 49 mm in diameter and 37.5 mm in length, at speeds of 30,000 rpm and 40,000 rpm. Injection speeds were chosen to be higher than the journal surface speed, but the total cooling air flow rate was matched to that of the axial cooling cases. Experimental results show that radial injection cooling is comparable to axial cooling at 30,000 rpm, in terms of cooling performance. Tests at 40,000 rpm reveal that the axial cooling performance reaches saturation when the pressure drop across the bearing is larger than 1000 Pa, while the cooling performance of radial injection is proportional to the cooling air flow rate and does not become saturated. Overall, multipoint radial injection is better than axial cooling at high rotor speeds.

Cooling power constitutes a large portion of the total electrical power consumption in data centers. Approximately 25%∼40% of the electricity used within a production data center is consumed by the cooling system. Improving the cooling energy efficiency has attracted a great deal of research attention. Many strategies have been proposed for cutting the data center energy costs. One of the effective strategies for increasing the cooling efficiency is using dynamic thermal management. Another effective strategy is placing cooling devices (heat exchangers) closer to the source of heat. This is the basic design principle of many hybrid cooling systems and liquid cooling systems for data centers. Dynamic thermal management of data centers is a huge challenge, due to the fact that data centers are operated under complex dynamic conditions, even during normal operating conditions. In addition, hybrid cooling systems for data centers introduce additional localized cooling devices, such as in row cooling units and overhead coolers, which significantly increase the complexity of dynamic thermal management. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to characterize the dynamic responses of data centers under variations from different cooling units, such as cooling air flow rate variations. In this study, a detailed computational analysis of an in row cooler based hybrid cooled data center is conducted using a commercially available computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. A representative CFD model for a raised floor data center with cold aisle-hot aisle arrangement fashion is developed. The hybrid cooling system is designed using perimeter CRAH units and localized in row cooling units. The CRAH unit supplies centralized cooling air to the under floor plenum, and the cooling air enters the cold aisle through perforated tiles. The in row cooling unit is located on the raised floor between the server racks. It supplies the cooling air directly to the cold aisle, and intakes hot air from the back of the racks (hot aisle). Therefore, two different cooling air sources are supplied to the cold aisle, but the ways they are delivered to the cold aisle are different. Several modeling cases are designed to study the transient effects of variations in the flow rates of the two cooling air sources. The server power and the cooling air flow variation combination scenarios are also modeled and studied. The detailed impacts of each modeling case on the rack inlet air temperature and cold aisle air flow distribution are studied. The results presented in this work provide an understanding of the effects of air flow variations on the thermal performance of data centers. The results and corresponding analysis is used for improving the running efficiency of this type of raised floor hybrid data centers using CRAH and IRC units.

An analytical study was undertaken using the performance model of a two spool direct drive high BPR 300kN thrust turbofan engine, to investigate the effects of advanced configurations on overall engine performance. These include variable bypass nozzle, variable cooling air flow and more electric technique. For variable bypass nozzle, analysis on performance of outer fan at different conditions indicates that different operating points cannot meet optimal performance at the same time if the bypass nozzle area kept a constant. By changing bypass nozzle throat area at different states, outer fan operating point moves to the location where airflow and efficiency are more appropriate, and have enough margin away from surge line. As a result, the range of variable area of bypass nozzle throat is determined which ensures engine having a low SFC and adequate stability. For variable cooling airflow, configuration of turbine cooling air flow extraction and methodology for obtaining change of cooling airflow are investigated. Then, base on temperature analysis of turbine vane and blade and resistance of cooling airflow, reduction of cooling airflow is determined. Finally, using performance model which considering effect of cooling air flow on work and efficiency of turbine, variable cooling airflow effect on overall performance is analyzed. For more electric technique, the main characteristic is to use power off-take instead of overboard air extraction. Power off-take and air extraction effect on overall performance of high bypass turbofan engine is compared. Investigation demonstrates that power offtake will have less SFC.

Zirconia stabilized with 8 wt.% Y2O3 is the most common material to be applied in thermal barrier coatings owing to its excellent properties: low thermal conductivity, high toughness and thermal expansion coefficient as ceramic material. Calculation has been made to evaluate the gains of thermal barrier coatings applied on gas turbine blades. The study considers a top ceramic coating Zirconia stabilized with 8 wt.% Y2O3 on a NiCoCrAlY bond coat and Inconel 738LC as substrate. For different thickness and different cooling air flow rates, a thermodynamic analysis has been performed and pollutants emissions (CO, NOx) have been estimated to analyze the effect of rising the gas inlet temperature. The effect of thickness and thermal conductivity of top coating and the mass flow rate of cooling air have been analyzed. The model for heat transfer analysis gives the temperature reduction through the wall blade for the considered conditions and the results presented in this contribution are restricted to a two considered limits: (1) maximum allowable temperature for top layer (1200?C) and (2) for blade material (1000?C). The model can be used to analyze other materials that support higher temperatures helping in the development of new materials for thermal barrier coatings.


The shape of a radiator cover is crucial either in determining the pattern of air flow or in increasing the same through the radiator core thereby increasing the thermal efficiency, thus making it a necessity to understand it. Moreover the parts circumjacent to the core namely the upper tank, lower tank, cooling fan, fins, tubes, etc promote the air flow rate. Also it is to note that the air flow rate of discharge gases from radiator core is one of the prime factors in determining the automobile cooling system. Initially factors such as temperature, pressure, air flow rate that affect the performance are obtained in order to derive out the entities of operation. One of the observations that can be made through this paper is that as the volume of the coolant increases, the rate of heat dissipation increases, also parameters like inlet temperature and volume flow rate of coolant, air velocity, temperature drop and drop in pressure of coolant are factors that contribute in radiator performance evidently.

Siemens heavy duty Gas Turbines have been well known for their high power output combined with high efficiency and reliability for more than 3 decades. Offering state of the art technology at all times, the requirements concerning the cooling and sealing air system have increased with technological development over the years. In particular the increase of the turbine inlet temperature and reduced NOx requirements demand a highly efficient cooling and sealing air system. The new Vx4.3A family of Siemens gas turbines with ISO turbine inlet temperatures of 1190°C in the power range of 70 to 240 MW uses an effective film cooling technique for the turbine stages 1 and 2 to ensure the minimum cooling air requirement possible. In addition, the application of film cooling enables the cooling system to be simplified. For example, in the new gas turbine family no intercooler and no cooling air booster for the first turbine vane are needed. This paper deals with the internal air system of Siemens gas turbines which supplies cooling and sealing air. A general overview is given and some problems and their technical solutions are discussed. Furthermore a state of the art calculation system for the prediction of the thermodynamic states of the cooling and sealing air is introduced. The calculation system is based on the flow calculation package Flowmaster (Flowmaster International Ltd.), which has been modified for the requirements of the internal air system. The comparison of computational results with measurements give a good impression of the high accuracy of the calculation method used.
